This goes out to everyone who's praised the Colts' class

by False Prophet

So, there are two separate accusations of the Colts cheating on Sunday.

The first one, albeit all ready decided not to be cheating, was Sound Piping.  According to the Kraft family, and several complaints issued by fans to the NFL, there was an unusual amount of noise in the RCA Dome on Sunday.  The problem?  It appeared that the colts were playing a CD of Fan Noise out of the speaker systems in the dome and having the tracks skip to make it more random.

I still bring this one up because although I trust the league, it seems like to much of a coincidence.  In previous years, several teams, including Bill Cowher and the Steelers have complained about the noise in the Dome, and suspected that something was wrong.  It seems as if while there may not be sound piping, or at least to NFL's knowledge, there is something going on.  There is no explanation as to why this can be a public issue so many times, and for nothing to have been found is truly remarkable.

The second one is a bit more confusing, although can explain a lot about the way the Pats offense played.  Whether it's the Colts fault or not, there was audio problems at the RCA dome.

Belichick said the Patriots operated without their coach-to-quarterback communication system for most of Sunday's game. He said it was unusual for that to happen and that the team went to a system in which they were signaling plays into Tom Brady.

What's happening in Indy?  Seriously, how can it be a coincidence that in a league where the equipment is held to the highest standard, that a team could be unable to communicate directly to their Quarterback in a rival's stadium in the biggest game of the year?

To me, there are two conclusions.

1. Everyone cheats, and all of you who have been bashing the Pats for cheating or running up the score, and specifically those of you who praise the Colts for their class have a lot of explaining to do.

2. Beyond that, the other conclusion I see is that the Colts aren't all they've been cracked up to be.  It was obvious a long time ago that BB is not the type of coach that will be friendly, respectful, or even kind enough to shake hands with his coaching rivals.  Especially this year, people have been praising the Colts and Dungy for how classy they are, and now, the roles have been reversed, and it's the Colts who are being put under the spotlight of questioning.

I don't care what the media thinks about the pats. What irratates me is that they act like other teams are practically flawless.

And MJD, I'm calling Bullsh*t on your statement that you've never called the Colts Golden boys:

I am curious about the 1st one. Every team that plays in a dome has had this accusation lobbed against them at some point. As to the second, I find it particularly interesting as this is one of the claims that has been lobbed against the Patriots by multiple teams.

Well, in order for them to have cheated, it has to be more than accusations. They cheated if they are found to have cheated. If the accusations aren't substantiated than to say they cheated is just speculation. I have never thought of the Colts as golden boys. I think what you are reacting to is the fact that every team that plays the Patriots looks ethical and likeable compared to the Patriots. But I don't understand what the complex is about. Would you rather be likeable and lose ot total facking arseholes and win. if the former I am sure you can lure Herm Edwards away from KC, if the latter you can just stick with sir hooded sweatshirt himself.

1st issue: Its true, every team who plays in a dome complains about this...them and people who play in seattle

2) my understanding of the rule is that if the communications device fails on one end, then both teams must discontinue use until they both have it back...

When it comes to Coach to Press Box radios, both teams must stop using them if either team has a problem. However, the rule is different when it comes to Coach to QB radios. If one team is having trouble, the other team doesn't have to stop using their equipment.

I think what's interesting is that allegations of audio anomalies were enough for many haters to convict the Patriots of further cheating earlier this year. However, when a team they don't hate is accused of such activity, all of a sudden said team is given the benefit of the doubt.

Exactly my point. When the pats were suspected of doing that exact same thing, people thought that they were guilty and that they should have to forefeit a game for the camera, and lose a draft pick for the audio. Now that it's the colts, no one cares

I don't recall that. What I recall is that the Jets accussed the pats of stealing signals which was substantiated. Multiple teams, including I believe the Jets and Packers, complained that when they played at Foxboro they lost audio communications. The NFL said they found no evidence of it. I did not see anyone say that the Pats actually interfered with audio communications.

Yeah, a big deal wasn't made of the audio things with the Pats. I'm a pretty big sports fan, and this was the first time I'd heard of the accusations. So, don't call this a double-standard. It's not. Sure, some idiots will always convict people before real proof has been handed down (like SOME Pats fans are doing to the Colts). But, you need to stop making such sweeping generalizations, acting like this has something to do with favorites or some other nonsense conspiracy theory.

Raw and FP are right, The audio abnormalities were brought up during cameragate. But, those allegations disappeared quickly to the point where some of you don't even remember it. It has been a non-issue since then. As I said yesterday, I would be more upset about the sound allegations if they were found to be true when the Steelers complained in '05. Had it been another team that hasn't been accused before, I would have more curiosity on the subject. But, this just sounds like more whining from the Pats fans who can't seem to accept that their favorite team was caught cheating and made an example of. Saying "all teams cheat" is both unfounded and just a rationalization to make you feel better about being a Patriots fan.

very nice. The funniest moment of the game was Harrison slapping a ref on the ass. As far as cheating goes... If there is a "natural" sound problem in the dome they should do something about it anyway. I'm sure nothing will be proven. Saints don't leave footprints, do they?

Will Tony Dungy continue to be the media's golden boy, and considered to be the ultimate example of class? Or will people now liken him to Osama bin Laden and Darth Vader, demand that he be suspended for the entire season, and that he forfeit several draft picks? There's a obviously a double standard here, just like when people whine about the Patriots running up the score on people, yet stay silent when the Colts do it. It's sickening the way the officials, the media, and practically the rest of the country adore the Colts and insult the Patriots.

There is no double standard when simply comparing Belichick to Dungy. Belichick is an asshole who was caught cheating after being warned by Tony Dungy has never been complained about by anybody until now. The Patriots simply don't have room to complain about stuff like this. This was the team that would leave their field uncovered during the playoffs so it would be slow and sloppy. It's homefield advantage for a reason.

Nobody complained about Bill Belichick until this year, either. If everyone else cheats too, then why are the Patriots singled out? Nobody should cheat, but everybody does. And football was meant to be played in foul weather. Bad weather games are some of the most memorable in football history. Remember the Ice Bowl? The Freezer Bowl? The Snow Bowl? The Fog Bowl? It's just part of the game, and makes it more exciting. I don't care if you hate the Patriots, just don't be so sanctimonious about it.

There's not a double standard. The Patriots were caught cheating. All they have against the Colts at this point is accusation. If they're found to have cheated, appropriate action will be taken. But to act like there's hypocrisy just because people aren't calling for Dungy's head because the Pats said they THINK something was amiss is absurd.

You're also going to have to point out to me who the Colts have run the score up against. They've had a lot of close games this year, and their only true blowout was week one against the Saints. In that game, they were only up by 17 with 10 minutes to play. A far cry from the Patriots, who were still passing the ball and going for it on fourth down with a 38 point lead with 10 minutes to play. If you're going to call people sanctimonious, you're going to have to actually back it up with something.

ASwaff,

I was writing in the future tense, not the present tense. Will people be calling for Tony Dungy's head; not are they calling for Tony Dungy's head. I think that even if any wrongdoing is discovered, people will not react the same way. As for the Colts running up the score on people, they've always done it. They did it to the Lions a few years back, they did it to the Bears the same year, and they did it plenty of other times as well. Peyton Manning didn't throw 49 touchdowns without tossing some unnecessary ones in there. The 1998 Vikings (who I loved) also crushed people week in and week out. Was there any whining over it? I thought not. I won't deny that the Patriots run up the score on people; just don't holler about it when you don't holler about it when other teams do it, too.

Steel Town,

The 1970s Steelers O-line took steroids; perhaps that had something to do with why it was so dominant.

Yep, this came straight from the NFL office regarding the so called incident:

The National Football League said the Indianapolis Colts didn't amplify crowd noise at the RCA Dome during their game two days ago against the New England Patriots.

Patriots President Jonathan Kraft complained to NFL security yesterday that the Colts were manipulating sound levels, Yahoo.com reported. The league said in a statement that the ``unusual audio moment heard by fans was the result of tape feedback on the CBS television broadcast and couldn't be heard in the stadium.

``We trust this will put an end to the ridiculous and unfounded accusations that the Colts artificially enhanced crowd noise at the RCA Dome in any way, the team said in a statement.

So, FP, can you get the panties out of a bunch and stick to real stories instead of blown up trivialized ones? New England won the game, yet you focus on something that was a non issue.
