This Just In: Yankees, Red Sox are good

by user Xinoph

Word has just come in across the newswire that the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, besides being in large media markets with a huge number of passionate fans, are actually very good teams. As of today, they have the second and third best records in the American League.

In fact, not only are they two of the best teams, they are apparently in the same division. This is very exciting news for non-selfish, non-petty baseball fans. They get a chance to watch the second-closest division race in baseball between the second and third best teams. What fun! Good baseball, good rivalry. If you like baseball you might even enjoy it without complaining. Imagine that.

So, two of the three best teams, and the second-closest division race. Wonder why the media would want to follow this story? It's a mystery to me. Clearly it has nothing to do with people being interested in good baseball in two huge media markets. It's clearly some sort of grand East Coast media conspiracy.
The national media should really devote some more attention to those crummy teams that won't be making the playoffs. Now THAT would be exciting! They can do stories like "How much will they lose by this week", "Will they lose two out of three or get swept", "Which good player they'll trade". It would sure be fun. As a baseball fan, I can tell you that's really where the exciting stories are, for sure.

You know, you hadn't been around for awhile, and I really didn't miss you. Although it's really quite amazing the world kept spinning when you weren't here for it to revolve around.

I believe you're projecting. I'm not the one who's unable to consider other opinions. Do you even ever think that someone besides you might be right? What a shocking development that might be. Oh hey, next time grow a spine and register, why don't you?

I don't disagree that the Yankees and Red Sox are good. They are good and I think they'll both make the playoffs. I just don't see the need to be a jerk about it and say that they deserve a full hour on sportcenter because no matter how good a team is, that's just boring.

By the way, why do you assume I'm not registered and just logged out because I like to push your buttons? (PS-It worked.)

If you're a registered user, then it's even worse. I think any registered user who comments anonymously is a gutless wonder; I never do it myself, at least not intentionally.

I don't have to say, X, you said "I'm not the one who's unable to consider other opinions." But isn't that what his whole sarcastic speil is all about? Other people's opinion that other teams besides the Red Sox and Yankees should be covered? Just asking.

Yeah, I messed up the beginning of that comment. I meant "I do have to say" not "I don't". Cause I did.

I was decrying the silly theory that it's some sort of conspiracy that has created the Boston/New York bias, CPCP. I wasn't decrying people directly in any way. I imagine you think that just because you dislike people because of their opinions, everyone does, but it's simply not the case. Some of us can argue opinions without having a problem with the person. Some of us can also argue as a devil's advocate, making arguments that we don't necessarily hold. Meditate on that for a while and get back to me.

This just in: the Tigers are better than both of these teams, but, of course, not mentioned once in this waste-of-space article. Not to mention that with Twins and White Sox victories tonight and a Yankees loss, the "third best team in baseball" could drop to fifth. I suppose we can stop talking about them if that happens, right?

You say the Tigers are better than the Red Sox and Yankees, and probably the White Sox. However, those are the tree teams the Tigers have had trouble beating this year. I cannot wait until the playoffs when the Tigers have to play all good teams. I'll give it to them though, they are beating up on everybody else.

At 35 games over .500 they gotta be doing something right. Personally I don't put much stock in 3 games against Boston (1-2) and 4 against New York (1-3). Talk about a small sample size. This is baseball, after all. Good teams occasionally lose to bad ones. That's why they play 162 games.

and they are 3-6 against the White Sox. I'm just saying, I think it is going to be interesting for the Tigers in the playoffs. We'll spark this up again then.

And the Indians are 7-5 against the White Sox. Would anybody argue that the Indians are the better team? But you're right; the playoffs will be interesting...as they always are.

I suppose any article that disagrees with the F-man is a waste of space. When did this site morph from a sports blog/wiki into a fascist regime?

I don't understand how a Red Sox can can get so defensive about the Yankees. Isn't that against the rules?

Ever since the Red Sox won the World Series and their fans became insufferable, they seem to have teamed up with Yankee fans in order to convince the world that the only teams of worth are those in Boston and New York. Best rivalry in sports my arse; these two fan bases are now the best of friends. It's clear that Xino, a Red Sox fan, would be upset if his "hated rival" DIDN'T make the playoffs.

Please Do not speak for me as a Red Sox Fan Friskysman. I would love nothing more than to see the Yankees miss the playoffs. Not only that, I hope they miss it by a half game just so they think they have a chance.

Good random attempt at mind-reading, F-man, but I couldn't care less if the Yankees made the playoffs or not. What possible sentence did you divine that misinterpretation from? I just think they will. Just because I think it'll happen doesn't mean I like it.

As a Red Sox Fan I could care less if the Red Sox are covered much on ESPN. Thats why I have the New England Sports Network, so I can see Red Sox stuff all day. Except for the random times when Charlie Moore outdoor fishing comes on, thats just strange.

There has been so much misrepresentation and total incomprehension of my various comments on this issue that to clarify my thoughts at this point to all of you is probably impossible, but I'm a glutton for punishment, so I'll go ahead anyway. I love having personal attacks launched at me for having differing opinions; it's great.

I understand why the national media covers Boston and New York so much. It's because they're consistently, from year-to-year, very, very good. They are also in the same division. They also have a long history between them. All in all, it makes for a great story, and sports reporters love good stories. I don't understand why so many baseball fans fail to understand this, or hate it so much. So ESPN doesn't talk about your team very much. So what? You have your local paper and your local TV. I hardly ever watch ESPN, and they talk about my team all the damn time.

Moreover, besides finding a good story, they like to make money, and there's a *lot* of money in Boston and New York. All in all, the media covering the Sox and the Yankees a lot makes sense. It may not be fair, but it's not unreasonable, and it's not some kind of vast sinister conspiracy that some of you seem to feel the need to create.

Basically, Xinoph, you don't have much to complain about. Those teams win, ESPN covers them (and wow - ESPN is home to GREAT journalism), and sometimes people complain about a bias towards Boston and New York. So this defensive article comes across as a little whiny to fans of "lesser" teams with fractional payrolls. I don't think anyone thinks there's a backroom conspiracy - they just wish that sports journalists could think outside the usual box.

Well said. I'm not exactly sold on an east coast bias, but I do have to scratch my head at certain times. Personally I happen to enjoy a Red Sox-Yankees game, but it does admittedly get a little ridiculous at times when they're broadcasting an entire series in June. There are other teams that deserve the airtime too. I don't know when the last time I saw a Minnesota Twins game on ESPN (although that's not saying a whole lot since I don't watch ESPN all that much) despite the fact that they have arguably the two best pitchers in the majors on the team. There are also some very good players on bad teams that could probably use the publicity. Why not show a game Scott Kazmir is pitching in that's not against the Yankees or Sox? They could probably make more of an effort to disregard the time difference and go out to the west coast. Catch a game between Jered Weaver and Felix Hernandez. Even an Angels-A's game is important in regard to the playoffs. I'm sure there is some darts championship to fill the extra two hours time differential anyway.
