They Booed David--Not Dwyane

by user Jay Bic

As I watched the final game of the 2006 NBA Finals, I had a feeling that the Miami Heat would win it. They seemed to want it more. So, after averaging over 30ppg, is it any surprise that Dwyane Wade is the MVP of the playoffs?

The Dallas Mavericks fans were understandably upset, disappointed after the game, especially when commissioner David Stern came out to announce that this years playoff MVP was not a member of the Mavs.

I heard a lot of booing as Mr. Stern went up there to read the verdict in front of a packed arena, but I chalked it up to the aforementioned dissapointment of the fans. Then, as Dwyane Wade accepted the MVP trophy, the booing came to an abrupt end. To my surprise, Maverick fans were cheering for the man that single-handedly stole the championship from their beloved team. One can only draw one conclusion: People were booing David Stern, and not Dwyane Wade.

So whether or not fans were accepting the fact that they are witnesses to the "Air Apparent" is debatable, but one thing is for sure: Fans are fed up with the downfall of the NBA, and were showing their dissatisfaction--in front of millions of viewers--by booing the commisioner. Thoughts?

Stern could have encountered far worse than booing last night. He got off easy, in my opinion.

Well, it helped that he wasn't in Detroit... and neither was Ron Artest.

I have Eagles season tickets, right where the Eagles come out of their locker room. That is going to be an awesome games. The Eagles should be 4-0 going into that game. But I have to wonder, will T.O. play in that game?

I don't really think Stern has lost control of this league, nor over the fans. There are a ton of compelling stories from this last year (LeBron, the Clippers, the Pistons, Wade), and each are part and parcel of what should be a vibrant future for the NBA. It's not right to blame Stern for what is basically a no-win situation regarding the officials. Do you review the officiating and make changes, thereby calling into doubt the Heat's title? Or do you let the problem fester?

Yes, there were tons of memorable moments from a great season. But those are quickly forgotten when what should have been a great Finals was ruined by horrid officiating and an absurd suspension. That's where Stern loses the fans. It was a great season, but when you end on a note like that, the sour taste has six months to fester. That's really bad.

DNL i agree w/ you. I think they should rectify the officiating problem in the offseason. But then again, bad officiating is a problem in other sports, too, so it will be hard to find a happy median.

The foul against Wade in Game 5 changed everything. You dont call a foul at the end of the game.

Then why bother calling fouls in the first minute. The NBA is so garbage nowadays. What ever happened to length-of-the-floor drives after a shot. Now, you get to call a timeout like every two seconds and get the ball on the other side of half court. Bring back great series like the Lakers-Celtics of the 80s ... or even the Bulls-Pistons of the 90's.
