These Pats? Not so fun to watch

by Xinoph

I have to say that so far, as a diehard New England Patriots fan, I'm a little disappointed by this season.

No, it's not because I want them to win by even greater margins. Nor is it because I'm looking forward to them going undefeated; I don't really care about that. It's not even because I'm angry about Spygate and pissed at Coach Bill about it, though I am.

No, it's because the Patriots aren't fun to watch anymore.

See, it's hard to remember now amongst all the superlatives this season, but the Pats used to regularly creep into the playoffs at 10-6 or 11-5. I say creep not because those are marginal records - they aren't - but because at least four or five of those wins would be by a field goal or less. So you had the feeling that they were that close every year to being 6-10 or 5-11 and missing the playoffs entirely.

Did it mean that we had to endure constant whining from other football fans that Tom Brady wasn't as good as Peyton Manning because of the stats? Sure it did. But that was fun, too. How often did I have that debate here on AGM over the past few years? Seems like once a week at least. I'd argue that Tom won regardless of the individual stats he got, that it didn't matter whether he won by 20 points or 2, that he was amazing under pressure. And the Peytonites would say that PM got all the stats, and had better commercials. (Of course, the same people who said that Tom wasn't that good because he always won by close margins are now complaining about the Pats running up the score, but that's another issue for another day)

But, it also meant that nearly every week I could count on the Pats playing one of the most interesting games in the NFL. They'd find some new wacky way to win each week, some way to march down the field so they could get ahead. They always made it entertaining.

Not anymore.

That style of Patriots play is gone, now that Tom finally has one of the best receiving corps in the NFL. The only game that was even remotely like that was the Indianapolis game (surprise, surprise). Honestly, I can sympathize with the rest of the league's fans complaining. These aren't the Patriots we're used to watching. I'm not sure exactly who to compare them to, but they're something else entirely. The franchise went from being a terrible team, to being mediocre, to being great, to being now....what? It's hard to say.

But I know right now I'm going to concentrate on watching my 8-1 Celtics. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's Wednesday game against Golden State. They're fun to watch even when they win by a lot, just because it's fun to watch a good C's team again.

And if I get really bored, I might even turn on a Bruins game. Who knows. Stranger thinsg have happened.

This should be emailed to Bill Belichick. Maybe the Patriots will try harder to appease Xinoph and lose a few games.

Maybe you will get lucky and the injury bug that hit the Colts will infect the Patriots. BTW - this mentality is stupid. Success should be appreciated and not taken for granted. Trust me, I cheer for the Cubs.

Who's taking anything for granted? Who's not appreciating? My only point here is that the old close-game Pats were more entertaining.

You sound like a spoiled brat. Can you blame anyone for pointing out how ridiculous this sounds? It's like if I walked around and started saying "Man, I have too much money, I have nothing more to spend it on! Woe is me! What am I going to do with all this money? ". I wouldn't blame anyone who punched me in the face.

Once again, I'm not complaining about the Pats being good. I'm just pointing out that they're not as entertaining as they used to be, whether you love them or hate them.

It is only more "entertaining" in close games YOUR TEAM WINS. Otherwise, it is just heart break. No way that a real fan would prefer a blow out victory over an "entertaining" loss.

I suppose if you only find games your teams win entertaining, then you'd be right. But I can't honestly say that's the case for me. I thought the last C's game was incredibly entertaining, even though it was our first loss (because Pierce blew the final play and went for the 3). If we'd been leading by 30 points in the 3rd, I'd probably have turned it off.

So tell me, MMJ, do you watch more Yankees games at the end of the season if they're 14 games ahead, or if it's a close division race? Or do you watch the same number no matter what? If you watch more when the division's close, then you probably agree with my overall point here, even if you don't like me making it.

no, really, i agree. They are boring. I watched 5 minutes of the Sunday game. I know a crap load of NE fans that didn't watch past the first quarter. I would rather watch a competitive game then some team running up the score.

Some of you seem to have misunderstand the thrust of my point here. I'm not saying that in sum I dislike the Pats being dominant - it's awesome. I'm just saying it makes for bad TV, and a less-than-exciting season all together, and one of the things I usually look forward to this time of year is close, exciting Pats games. Would a Kansas-UMass game be fun to watch, even if you were a Kansas fan? Not really. Blowouts are rarely fun to watch.

I agree with Xinoph, when the Patriots ripped off a 21 game winning streak, they had much closer games. As a Patriots fan, their current domination is more enjoyable for me, but for a neutral fan, I imagine a Patriots game would be boring.

its different in baseball versus football. There's only 16 games a season for what like 3 hours a game? Sorry, but if you turn off the game due to being "bored" that they are winning by too much, maybe you are not that much of a football fan. not that there's anything wrong with that, just giving my observation.

Ahh, you're right. Having gone to every home game for the past 15+ years, including the playoffs, I'm not much of a football fan. For the record, that includes the era when they were terrible. So I'm a bad football fan because when the score differential for my team's game is 30 points in the third quarter I switch to the other game that's close, and all I miss is two more touchdowns to make it a 40+ point differential? Yeah, that must make me a bad fan. That totally makes sense.

For the record, I never said you said I was a bad football fan. I suppose, afraid, because I don't agree with you I must be mindless and dumb, right? Honestly, have you ever heard any other Pats fan say they missed the close games of years past? Give me the URL to the blog of the guy who wrote that.

Chip, if you knew me better you'd know I've always preferred team accomplishments over individual ones. So I'm vastly more interested in watching a good game than watching someone pursue a record. If the game's basically over in the 2nd quarter, what am I going to miss other than Brady or Moss inching closer to breaking a record? I actually think I'm an amazing football fan because I'd rather watch a good game than just mindlessly watch my team all the time.

BTW, if I'm actually physically present at a game, I *never* leave early. I only leave a game that's a blowout when there's a closer game I can watch thanks to the miracle of DirecTV; I never leave a game early just to drive home.

I'm totally happy with the season. What I said was, and you might understand this if you read the article or had a reading comprehension level higher than a first grader's, was that this team wasn't as much fun *to watch*.

Once again, apparently some people didn't understand my point. I love this season. This season is fantastic. Amazing. Incredible. Super. Awesome. Pick a superlative and apply it (readers like AF#1 up there might need to use a dictionary to find out what superlative means) What I am writing here is that I am a *little* (keyword there, hint hint) *disappointed* (another keyword) that there aren't the close games we were treated to in years past. Those are fun to watch, more so than the 30-point shelackings we've been seeing this year, IMO. If you disagree with that viewpoint, and think blowouts are entertaining as long as your team is winning, you're certainly entitled to that view. But, I never said I wasn't happy with this season - I said I was a "little disappointed" because the games have been less than totally entertaining, IMO.

Point of clarification: I actually did miss part of the beginning of this season - the first three home games, I was still away. So I have missed *some* Pats games in the past fifteen years, just not many :) Point being, I've watched a lot of Pats games at home.

I totally enjoy watching the Pats. I wish there were more teams of their calliber... it would be nice if they had more competition. But some of the teams they are destroying really aren't as bad as the score. The amazing thing is that this team was put together and (so far) is being held together and playing at such a high level. Without decent competition that is freaking hard to do. If Belichick does not geat coach of the year, the NFL ought to collectively eat it. er, wait. They already are.

As a football fan, I am thoroughly enjoying watching one of the best offenses in the history of football. As a Patriots fan, I'm loving the fact that they've won every game. Who cares if it's exciting? Sure, that'd be nice, but as coaches always say, a win's a win.

I'm just enjoying watching the record books get rewritten right now. I think it's good television as long as my team wins. So far, this has been the case. Complaining in any form about the team you are watching is, in my opinion, jackassery...appreciate what you're seeing, because you're probably never see anything like it again.
