Theo stands pat

The Trading Deadline for this season has come and gone, and GM Theo Epstein made it official at a 5PM news conference: The Boston Red Sox made no last-minute deals today, let alone any blockbusters.

There had been a number of possibilities rumored over the past couple of days, of course, involving players such as Julio Lugo, Barry Zito, Alfonso Soriano, Andruw Jones, and yes, even Roger Clemens, but in the end the Sox decided there was not a lot to be done to this team without too much being taken from this team.

Often fans scream bloody murder when their team is unable to make a big trade before the deadline, whether for good reasons or not, but this season Red Sox Nation should be fairly content. The only really big addition this team could have made was a mid-to-high-end starting pitcher, and most discussions in that area involved giving too much away. Certainly I don't think the pitching needs were so desperate as to warrant breaking up the best defense in baseball, or giving away some of the best young pitchers in the game. Furthermore, with Trot Nixon hurt, Boston needs its backup outfielders. Given all that, there wasn't really a whole lot to deal with.

Additionally, Boston has a number of players who will be coming off the DL, and at least a few of those could be big contributors. It will be interesting to see how David Wells does today, but getting him back and contributing would be like making a blockbuster trade. Tim Wakefield's return will be a huge boost, and the addition of even a mediocre Keith Foulke to the bullpen would be helpful. Who knows, maybe even Matt Clement will still be able to help somehow - though likely not as a starter, with the success of Jon Lester.

In short, Boston has the pieces in place to do well for the rest of the regular season and in the postseason. Some of those pieces aren't quite healthy, but they likely will be back and contributing in some way before the end of the year. And they'll all be returning at the best possible time, down the stretch.

Theo was wise not to mortgage the future for a blockbuster now. This team can definitely win with the players it has, even considering the moves the rest of the division made today.

They called a news conference to announce that there is no news? I understand that, it's just funny.

Hey, you gotta tell the Boston media *something*, even if it's nothing. :)

Boston wants a news conference when Theo ties his shoe. There needs to be constant baseball discussion going even if there's not actually anything to talk about.

ever heard of 'waivers'?

Uhhh...yes. Of course. So? I didn't discuss waivers. They were irrelevant to my main point. It's impossible to know now who might be put on waivers before the end of the year, and whether Boston would be interested in anyone who was. They can claim someone off waivers without it having impact on the main point of my article: they didn't need to make any big trades this year, and Theo made the wise decision on this one.

touchy touchy... it was rhetorical question to remind all of you 'end of the world' Sox fans that Theo didn't not do anything quite yet...and could still deal the precious youth he's been hoarding...for instance... Andrew Jones would probably clear waivers for most teams on $$$ alone. X, you might need to lay off the insecure over-defense of your efforts. You do a good job most times. Write it and let it ride, don't worry about misinterpreting everyone and throwing up a rabid counter-attack... jeez

and just about every player goes through waivers this time of year...ask the 'other' Manny

No, not really touchy at all, just didn't see the relevance. I know that he could still make moves this season, Manny. I meant he didn't do any big trades before the deadline, and didn't feel a huge need to tinker with what is obviously a very good club.

Manny, I wasn't trying to defend or not defend anything, just responding to your waivers comment. Talk about touchy and over-defensive. ;-)

My favorite defense: "no, I'm not being defensive" That's like people always telling you that you're always blaming others or "I'm not paranoid, you're paranoid"

My favorite attack is "you're being defensive". Then you can accuse people of anything and if they respond, you've got them.

Oddly enough, Kenny Williams didn't make any moves to the White Sox. I figured he'd do something to reassure the Sox faithful that they were still in it.

The Red Sox should be content with their roster. The best thing to do was not to tinker with it. The White Sox could have used an upgrade with their bullpen.

I think if Nixon hadn't gotten hurt, he would've been traded along with maybe Hansen or Murphy for an outfield upgrade. Maybe somebody like Abreu, Jones or Soriano, or even a lesser known name who could perform better than Trot.

I don't think the rotation is as much of a concern as people make out. They should have a solid four man rotation in the playoffs. They've got Schilling, Beckett and Lester for sure. Then, you have to figure either Clement, Wells or Wakefield will get healthy and step up. Theo made the right move not trading for a pitcher.

Exactly, good points, Bobby. I've maintained for quite a while now that the BoSox are actually really quite good the way they are, better than many people think. With the young arms all coming up, their bullpen is better than it has been in recent years - including 2004. Their rotation is going to be fine (Wells put in a decent, not great, not terrible, but decent performance tonight). Their defense is obviously amazing (a nice change if I ever saw one!), and their offense is near the top of the league. Alltogether they're a fine club. Any team that goes on a twelve-game winning streak should not be messed with.

Oh hey look, somebody's instantly giving a negative vote to any comment I make! That's original *and* mature, nicely done. I'll never figure out why people vote the way they do on comments.

I don't give out negative comments very often....but I do give negatives when people start complaining about getting negatives just because I don't see a point to that. (just in case you're wondering where one of that -3 came from....)

Yeah, Wells didn't look too bad for a 43-year-old who made his first start since May and only his third of the year. However, it would be nice to see him continue to grow back into the old David Wells as he makes more starts. We wouldn't be able to trust him in a big game right now.

It would've been nice to see an addition to the team, but there was really nothing available for what the Sox were willing to give up. They have a solid team that can compete with any other team in the league and while their pitching is a bit of an issue, every team's pitching is a bit of an issue. So I'm not too worried.
