As the fans filed out of Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday afternoon some were disappointed, some were upset and others were down right angry but they all had one thing in common everyone was quiet. It was only fitting that a day filled with sporadic rain showers turned into a steady downpour as the fans filed through the exits. The Bills had lost 15-14 on a last second field goal by Jason Elam but this day was about more than a football game, this day was about a man fighting for his life.
On the opening kickoff of the second half, reserve tight end Kevin Everett suffered a spinal cord injury following a helmet to helmet hit while tackling Domenick Hixon. The medical staff rushed on the field as Everett lay motionless and it was easy to realize the severity of the injury immediately. As the ambulance drove onto the field, most eyes were transfixed on what was going on, I headed to the corridor for some peace. We all have a perception of football players being invincible but a situation like this one puts everything in perspective.
Everett appeared to have a good preseason and training camp. This was a season that both Kevin and the fans had hoped would be a breakout season for him but as it turns out we are hoping he can bounce back from this tragic injury. This is not about Kevin Everett the football player for the Buffalo Bills, out of Miami University, this is about Kevin Everett the person who is fighting for his life. I’m sure I speak for many people when I say I’m hoping for the best, our thoughts and prayers are with you Kevin.
