The next great Yankee?

Five innings pitched. 1 hit allowed, two walks, 8 strikeouts. 0.00 ERA. Those are pretty good stats. I think we've got a pitcher even better than Mariano. His name is Joba Chamberlain.

I was listening to a game the other day. Rivera got the win, according to the official scoring rules; but he really didn't deserve it. He came in with a 1-run lead, let the O's tie the game, then in the bottom of the inning, Jeter drove in the winning run.

Chamberlain, by contrast, came in the inning before -- three up, three down. That's pitching.

Now I know, this was Rivera's first blown save since April, but in that particular game, he didn't do what he needed to. Chamberlain did. And this was a guy who started the season in Class A!

Chamberlain is certainly extremely talented, and looks to be an absolutely fantastic pitcher. But let's not get carried away just yet. 5 innings in the Bigs is a pretty small sample size.

Lets see how good he is next year, when the teams have all seen him and have adjusted to his pitching style.

Chamberlain has shown how impressive he really is. He can get that fastball up there with a nasty slider with an occasional curve.

5 innings pitched...Fabio Castro did something akin to that last year... He was dropped down to triple A this year...his stats certainly didn't extrapolate...

My favorite part - "Jeter drove in the winning run" - yeah, "accidentally dribbled in the winning run" wasn't poetic enough?

I know you're a Yankee fan, but 5 innings... FIVE. Kevin Maas would be proud of your enthusiasm. Hell, Edwin Jackson would be in line for the Hall of Fame if we were counting only the first 5 innings of a career...

The next great Yankee will either be Ken Griffey Jr, Barry Bonds or both... next year.

You say "'accidentally dribbled in the winning run' wasn't poetic enough?" This is baseball. All that matters is getting more runs than the other team. Whether it's a home run to deep left center or a blooper just off first base, if you put the ball where the other guy can't get it and a run scores, particulary if it's the bottom of the 9th and the score is tied, you're doung your job. Jeter did what he needed to do. Let's give him credit.

Just last year Fausto Carmona looked like he was destined to become one of the worst pitchers in history. Lets wait a little while before he is anointed the next pinstripe savior.

i thought Sam Militello and Kevin Maas were the next great Yankees back in the day, so I'm a little reluctant to declare them that until they have at LEAST 5 years experience

The ironic thing is: The Yankees now have a good pitcher to talk about... for now, and the Red Sox have a bad pitcher in Gagne to talk about... for now. A team that had nothing for pitching a couple of months ago seem to get it together, and a team that had probably THE best pitching staff a couple of months ago don't. I'm not saying that Gagne is a bad pitcher now, but I AM saying that Chamberlain can't be considered a good pitcher because of 3 games. He DOES seem to do good with the Yankees so far, and it really looks like he's going to be a key factor in the Yankees bullpen, but I'm just saying, like Gagne, you can't judge a pitcher because of 2-3 games that they're good in or blew. If they're slumping, then yeah, I'll be convinced, but that's a different story. Good job for Joba Chambelain so far. If he keeps this up, the Yankees will have a much better bullpen; hence they will be playing in October.

Chamberlain is the fourth rated righthanded pitching prospect. The second? Some guy named Phillip Hughes. I think the move of Chamberlain to the pen is a good idea with Mo being a free agent this season, but I've seen nor heard nothing which indicates this is nothing more than a chance for the kid to get his feet wet. I do know he's going to the Arizona Fall League as a starter, so much adieu about nothing.

As a Yankee fan I'm in love with two young guys, Melky Cabrera and Joba Chamberlain. Melky is a great hitter that slumped in the first few months and now is doing awesome and a GREAT defensive center fielder. Chamberlain reminds me so much of Clemens. The dominance (yea it's only been a few innings, but still), his energy, hell, he even looks like him. Great future pitcher, I wouldn't mind him starting or working the bullpen.

I can't say you're wrong about Cabrera. He threw a runner out in that game that Rivera blew that was unbelievable.

Whatever happened to the immortal Drew Henson? Checked NFL.com and he hasn't thrown a pass since 2004 and spent the last two seasons on bench with Cowboys and Vikings and is about third or fourth on Vikings QB depth chart.

Yea, he sucked when he started. Never really given a decent oppurtunity but I guess coaches don't like him in camp.

First off, Drew Henson was an awful defensive 3rd baseman from what I understand. 2nd, Drew can hit the ball for power but that didn't mean a hell of a lot considering his minor league batting averages in Triple-A usually about .230 or so. 3rd, Are the Yankees still paying him this season or did they buy out his contract?

Please don't start comparing Chamberlain to anyone right now. He is just a kid and he doesn't even look like Clemens when he pitches. His future is ahead of him if the powers that be don't screw him up. Maybe if left to play into his position he will continue to improve and establish himself on the major league level. 8-10 innings doesn't make a major league pitcher, particularly at his age, and we have all seen so many young really good pitchers come and go fast in the major leagues. The Bird is a prime example. There are so kids in the minors for the Angels in single A ball and some for the Braves that have got so much stuff it scares you to watch them. But at 17-18-19 futures are only ahead of you. Nolan Ryan wasn't built in a day and neither was Whitney Ford, or Koufax, Gibson or Clemens. Give the kid a bread and don't pin a tag on him that will put too much pressure to compare himself to past great great pitchers.

You live in Tennessee, have you seen him pitch with your own eyes. I'm not comparing him to Clemens, I'm saying he reminds me Clemens in terms of his energy and presence.

This is just crazy, guys. The kid's been in the majors less than a week and we're getting comparisons to a first ballot Hall of Famer. He may physically look like one, or mechanically throw like one, but one thing he doesn't have is the presence of one. This is just a cup of coffee for him, he won't be on the postseason roster and the chances of him making the Yankees out of spring training next year are remote. He just doesn't have the experience to be a factor on a Major League staff. I'm looking forward to seeing him pitch in the AFL, but one thing I can tell you for certain...his hype will far outweigh his ability. Just like with Stephen Drew, and every other top pick that comes out here. They are playing against the best competition they have ever seen in their careers and in most cases are in way over their heads.

I don't live in Tennessee any more and haven't for quite a few years. In terms of energy yes there is something of Clemens but I can't agree with you about presence. Not even close. This kid doesn't even come close to his ability. Right now he has no respect pitching while even today CLemens has respect at his age on the mound almost as much as Ryan did in his last year.
