The nerve...

ESPN.com recently posted '" Cantonized ", 50 active players who will one day be enshrined in the HOF. The first Steeler to make the list was Alan Faneca. No surprise here; the guy deserves it. Ward and Polamalu also made the cut. I thought it was an interesting mix of players. Certain guys like, Farve, are a lock. But other ones had me wondering.

Then I read their " 10 Big Names who won't be Hall of Famers " and I got pissed cause Big Ben was listed. I'm not upset with him being named, rather, it's what they said about him that got me angry. Here is their reasoning:

At first glance, it might seem preposterous to slam the Hall door in Big Ben's face so soon. But upon closer inspection, it makes sense. Roethlisberger proved to be an effective game manager in his first two pro seasons, and he has a Super Bowl ring to show for it. But his Super Bowl performance (9-for-21 with two picks) was dreadful, and then he regressed in 2006. Now the Steelers are losing personnel from their championship team, and nothing to this point suggests that Roethlisberger can carry an undermanned team on his shoulders to playoff success. Are you kidding me? They're right about him not doing so well in the Superbowl, but what personnel have we lost from our championship team? The Bus and Hartings retired. Kimo. And Randle El wasn't all that good anyway. Other then that, the team is pretty much intact. If anything we've gotten better man power.

The point about a new coaching staff is mute. Barry Switzer came in after Jimmy Johnson retired when he won the SB with the Cowboys 2 consecutive years in a row. During Switzer's 2nd season took the Cowboys back to the SB and beat the Steelers. The Cowboys team was just as intact as the Steelers. Don't say it can't be done.

My favorite part is "nothing to this point suggests Roethlisberger can carry an undermanned team on his shoulders to playoff success." But Matt Leinhart and Vince Young can?! And their listed ahead of Ward. Heck, even completely untested RB Adrian Peterson gets into Canton according to these guys. I call when I see it, this is BS.

Roethlisberger is going to be a quantity over quality QB to get into the hall...lots of 1 time champ QBs aren't in the hall (trent dilfer anyone?)

Kinda reminds me of another Pitssburgh QB who wasn't all that good but got it done...4 times...

Nice article, welcome aboard...

Oh...but the steelers aren't winning the superbowl this year...in 1995 the eagles had rich kotite as a head coach, the giants were transitions and the skins were coming down (plus the cowboys had dominated and no one really got the salary cap yet...) Now there's a cap, and the steelers play in a division with the ravens and bengals, 2 very good teams...not to mention a tough conference to win a WC birth (think Jets, Jags, Chargers/Broncos/Chiefs? and possibly the titans?)

Ward might be my favorite Steeler of all time, and there is no way he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. I'm sorry. He's a great player, but he's not Hall of Fame material. But that list is dumb anyway. How can you come anywhere close to speculate what players will be good enough to make the Hall of Fame when they are just starting their career? Big Ben has a very good chance of NOT making the Hall, because most players are not good enough. But he also has a very good chance of coming out this year and being a star player. The new coaching staff in Pittsburgh has switched to a spread offense that runs the no huddle, something that Ben is very comfortable running and was practically begging Cowher and the Whiz to install last year.

you can speculate based on their stats and on how they improve their team, their organization, and their city/community

I'm not saying Big Ben should be in the Hall of Fame, what I'm saying is that his career shouldn't be ruled out already, when he has only played 3 years in the league.

And he's shown NO sign of becoming a Hall of Famer? Even with last year, his career numbers are 644 completed passes on 1,032 attempts (62.4%), 8,519 yards, 52 TD's and 43 INT's, for a rating of 87.9.

Out of the 23 Modern QB's in the Hall of Fame, only 4 have had a better or equal start to their career: Otto Graham, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, and Joe Montana. That's a hell of a list to keep company with. You could add Unitas to that list, but I didn't because his completion percentage is too low, IMO. But if you look at the other people on that list, none of them had good seasons until they were either in their third year, or well after. That includes Troy Aikman, John Elway, Dan Fouts, Bob Griese, Joe Namath, and Steve Young.

Hell, Terry Bradshaw is a perfect example of this. He was a joke in his first five years. He was hated in Pittsburgh, not just by the fans but by Noll as well. In his first five years, his stats were 589 for 1,227 (48%) 7,524 yards, 48 TD's and 81 INT's. Would ANYBODY in their right mind say this guy was going to go to the Hall of Fame?

All of the stats and information I am basing this argument on are from here: http://www.p...ositions.jsp
