The lost art of keeping score

by Silencer76

I did a post earlier on my blog, Juuuust a bit Outside (http://silencer76.blogspot.com), about the dying art of actually scoring a ballgame.  Since I know that most, if not all of us, are hardcore fans and can actually appreciate that, I wanted to appeal to some of you to check it out, and perhaps suggest some games that might be worth tracking the way you would at the ballpark.

Current or historical, whatever comes to mind.  I plan on doing something along the lines of this rendition of last night's Cubs/Astros game once every week or every other week, depending on what is happening in sports.  Of course, this would not solely be limited to baseball.  Hockey and football work well too, though basketball is not as cooperative.

So feel free to check it out, and leave me a note of what might be a game worth making a note of and tracking for future reference.  Thanks for all your help in this endeavor.

Friendly advice. Post your article here. Reading teasers just to click over to another blog does not go well here.

I try not to do duplicate content if I can help it, because that merely leads to a lot of confusion and aggravation. I didn't realize it was a violation of any rules to post a link back to your normal place of residence so to speak. If so, I do apologize.

Its a proven fact that click through rates are extremly low for this site, so you may only be adding 2-6 new hits to your site by simply teasing your article. Where you could just post it and get 20-30 page views and get credit for your work.

My mom back in the day used to score all the time for my baseball and basketball games. Sports moms are awesome.

lol I like doing it, because in the end it gives you something to look back at. The traditional newspaper boxes are all right, but they leave a lot out. You can see that Chico Escuela was 0 for 4, but when you do the scoring, you can see that he went down looking in the 2nd, grounded to short in the 4th, popped to second in the 5th and lined to left in the 8th...that he failed to deliver a runner from third with less than two outs in the 2nd and 5th, and so on. To me, it brings the game back to life even if it has long passed.

I am currently sifting through some old files to see what I may use for my next post in this endeavor. Hopefully something jumps out and catches my eye so I can put the time to it make it happen. Last night's game, while nothing special, did have the MLB debut of Eric Patterson, and was a well pitched game all round.

I score Twins games all the time. I've done over 30 this year. Very fun, especially when you have the right kind of scorecard. (I use pitch-by-pitch) I'll try to post some of them, if I find time, and if I can get my scanner working...

hm, I might have to dig up a pitch by pitch one, if I can find one, the one I used on the post is from a template online.

cool, that will be a welcome addition to the collection, now to just find a game that is worth putting the time in on...perhaps Zambrano/Oswalt tomorrow, if the Cubs bats wake up. lol

Here's the game I did last night. Cleveland's Paul Byrd pitched a nine inning four hit gem. Cleveland won 4-0.

It is not that hard if you take the time to familiarize yourself with all the symbols and things. Once you do that, it is as simple as watching a game unfold.

Yeah, I really enjoy just looking over the scorecard once I've finished it, going through the game in my head. I beats SportsCenter by a long shot. (sorry about the two big images above, I didn't know direct links did that)

lol no worries, when I posted mine on my normal page, I was fortunate that they came out small enough to not distort the page, but you could still click the images to get them larger.
