The best MLB Team money can buy

by Kdark11

My friends and I were caught up in an argument on the best value players in Baseball so I thought I would open this one up to a larger forum. Here is my attempt to build the best and most experienced team I can for as little money as possible. I would enjoy hearing your opinions on this team.

Criteria: I felt it was important to have a good mix of veteran players with some youth. I avoided adding rookies to this roster in an attempt to keep this in some way realistic. Adding rookies would simply create a small payroll that would never happen in the real world. I tried to get the best player looking back the past few years for consistency and utility. Pitchers were dificult because I could have added young guys with small salaries and to some extent I did (Joel Zumaya and Justin Verlander). I don't think anyone will disagree that experience plays and even bigger role in the pitcher position than almost anywhere on the field. The 3 starting pitchers on this roster all have playoff experience and you can set up a Righty, Lefty, Righty Rotation. I also believe we have a good mix of style out of these 3 pitchers. I went with experience at the closer role choosing Joe Borowski. Chipper Jones at DH was interesting to look at even for me. He has the highest salary on this squad and mainly because of all the playoff experience and consistency he brings to the table. Since he is in the later stages of his career, I thought it was reasonable to have him at DH. The two bench players were added to this roster based on utility. Neither are considered the best at their position. Carlos Guillen can play virtually all infield positions and can bat almost anywhere in a lineup. David DeJesus can play all 3 outfield positions and can bat lead off.

The total salary of this team is $56,020,333 (8 players shy of a 25 man roster). These figures are based on 2007 salaries and does not take into account an extensions that these players may have signed.

1B Ryan Howard ($900,000)
2B Placido Polanco ($4,600,000)
SS Hanley Ramirez ($402,000)
3B Chone Figgins ($3,500,000)
LF Matt Holliday ($4,400,000)
CF Curtis Granderson ($410,000)
RF Alex Rios ($2,535,000)
C Joe Mauer ($3,750,000)
DH Chipper Jones ($12,333,333)
BN David DeJesus ($2,000,000)
BN Carlos Guillen ($5,000,000)
P Dan Haren ($2,250,000)
P Tom Glavine ($7,500,000)
P Justin Verlander ($1,030,000)
RP Joel Zumaya ($410,000)
RP Fernando Rodney ($1,000,000)
RP Joe Borowski ($4,000,000)

What about Dustin Pedroia at second base? He'll save you $4,220,000. His 2007 contract is $380,000. Or do you want Polanco because he has some experience?

pedroia is a rookie who he clearly said he was leaving off.

What if a rookie signs a 3 year contract and doesn't get an arbitration? Half of the infield only has one or two years of experience: Ryan Howard, Hanley Ramirez, Joe Mauer.

Russell Martin's and Brian McCann's contracts are pretty low too. ($666,667 and $387,500)

If you're talking about money, I'd go with Russell Martin, but I still think Mauer is a little bit better than Martin.

Otherwise, good list.

Something smells like a homer style team...I mean come on, SIX Tigers? Especially when you factor in how inconsistent Rodney and Zumaya are.

Isn't Papelbon only making $425,000? Why don't you replace him with Borowski?

Indeed he is. $425,500 actually. Putz is making $2,700,000 as well. I'd pick them over Borowski.

Utley could easily have been added to this team. I just think that Palanco does some things better than Utley at this point ie defense, batting with runners in scoring position and great team guy. Utley has many of these qualities but I just don't think he has mastered them yet.

If I am drafting a team, Utley is way above Polanco on the list. I understand you are a Tiger fan, but there is NO BETTER OR EQUAL SECOND BASEMAN TO CHASE UTLEY. And the second closest guy is Brandon Phillips.

Chipper Jones? He's a great player, but at $12 mil, how is he on this list?

Chipper and Glavin are on this team for Experience. I also needed a lefty in the Rotation and Chipper can bat from both sides of the plate.

So you are saying that there are not two guys with as much experience that you can get for less than $20 million?

Now being that I'm a Yankee fan i need to suggest Cano at second (490,800) Much cheaper than either utley or Palanco, not a rookie (Pedroia) and right up there in production. In proving I'm objective however I would also say Papelbon has to be on there over Putz or Borowski. Pretty much anyone would be better than Dejesus though, being a Yankee fan Melky Cabrera comes to mind, but I'm sure there are plenty of other cheap none rookies you could get to replace Dejesus

I agree on Dejesus. He could be replaced by other players but I think a lot of knock him because he plays in KC

$56 mil and you only have 6 pitchers... still, you're already 2 1/2 times the Tampa Bay Rays' salary. Money can buy a lot more... and... you wouldn't be a Tigers fan or anything, eh?

As a Seattle fan: there are some SOLID set up guys in the bullpen that are getting paid very little, if not base.

I think to do this for real, you need to put an experience floor in place -- say, 4+ years of major league experience. The reason why is because players with 0-3 years experience aren't arbitration eligible yet (with a slight exception for "super twos"), and therefore are nearly certain to be underpaid.

Actually, I'd limit the team to players who have 6+ years of experience and therefore have hit free agency (even if they didn't actually become free agency); or guys who were non-tendered or otherwise cut beforehand. It's the best team money can buy, after all, but money can't buy guys who have never been available.

I agree. It then makes it a little more "even" if that makes sense. You have all guys who have been there for a good amoutn of time, and salary will actually coincide more with talent, so you end up having to be more "choosy"

I can save you a lot of money. Hungry guys with $400 and under contracts can beat the living hell out of any club of Mercs if they're programmed well. Jack used to do it with the Fish. With the exception of the Cards, most recent World Series champs (Marlins, Angels, White Sox, etc... ) have done it with hungry kids who are leaner and meaner. Maybe that's why the Yankees have kick-started their farm system into gear. You want to see who can make your dream team? Check out our FAB50 Baseball list for this year. BoSox need to dump Drew and bring up Brandon Moss, or trade him to someone like they did with Hanley, so he can find his major league space.
