The Worst Baseball Announcers Are...

20
Vote

by user Ben

After the Tim McCarver piece, I had to give some other announcers their due. These aren't ranked. I was going to do from good to bad, but I found more bad than good.

  • Joe Morgan- It's not that I don't like him. I think he's ok. But he does that habit of stating the obvious from time to time to time...
  • Rick Sutcliffe- yeah, his stock has dropped a litte recently.
  • Chris Berman- Not a favorite of mine. The home run calls and nicknames annoy me. If you can overlook that and his ego, he's ok.
  • Joe Buck- He's in the same boat as Berman. I find him pompous (see the Randy Moss Green Bay game), but he definately has a handicap in working with Capt. Obvious himself, Tim McCarver.
  • Lou Pinella- Fire Dusy Baker already and hire this guy so the next time I see him on TV, he's throwing chairs or punching the wall when he lets the door fly open on his rage cage after another loss.
  • Skip Carey- I've watched Braves games on TBS since I was 5 and it seems as I get older, this guy gets crazier. One of his favorite topics this season, the possible move of the Marlins to Vegas (it's not going to happen Skip). He's talked about several times. "If buy life insurance, you're gambling. You're gambling that you're going to die, they're gambling that you won't. You buy stocks? You're gambling. Move to team to Vegas and put a giant scoreboard with that looks like a slot machine." Skip justs wants to go to Vegas a couple times a season and play some slots. He's turning into his father, only without the "lovable wackiness." BUT he's still an entertaining listen.
  • Steve Phillips- Heard him a few times. He's not a favorite. After he did that "simulated GM" piece on ESPN, he has to be really good for me to forget that.
  • Jeff Brantley- UGH. The curly mullet enduces a headache that can only topped by....

The WORST: "I think if Norman Rockwell were alive the guy that he would paint more than anyone else would be David Eckstein."

"First year as a relief pitcher in the Angel chain, Woods made 97 out of 98 starts, did Woods, as a starter."

Tim McCarver- Words cannot explain my distain for you.

I would go with McCarver . . . personally. He talks down to people and says stupid things.

I'm sure these people aren't as bad as you make out (at least I hope not). You need to give them some credit, I'm sure they've done some good. Spare a thought for British commentaries on things like the World Series, and the Super Bowl. The announcers explain every single rule, in the Super Bowl this year, the announcer confidently explained "he's caught that pass, now that means they keep the ball...". In the World Series, the commentator was describing a routine ground out at first, saying "because he wasn't at first when the ball was in the first baseman's glove, he's out." If you want to strangle the men you mentioned, imagine how worldwide fans feel, having to put up with that level of analysis all the time.

Didn't Madden call the Super Bowl this year? That explains things like "he's caught that pass, now that means they keep the ball..." Don't feel like he's condescending to you, Madden's just stupid like that all the time.

I think Joe Buck is okay. Maybe you find him pompous, but at least he doesn't state the obvious, and at least he doesn't sate the flat-out wrong, as I here from time to time from truly bad commentators. I'd like to throw in my vote for Joe Morgan's counterpart, John Miller. I get so sick of hearing that guy mispronounce names, I want to hang myself.

How about "all of the guest announcers brought on by FOX"? Better yet, how about "All announcers who work at FOX"? I agree with ASwaff, I don't think Joe Buck is so bad. Whenever I'm forced to watch baseball games on a network other than NESN, I'm reminded how lucky we in New England (or with DirecTV....heh....) are to have NESN, instead of being stuck with FOXSports like most of the country. If you've watched a game on NESN you know what I mean.

I don't know about ALL FOX guest annoucers, I think Leiter did a great job during the 04 playoffs, especially for having so little experience. Was it 04 or 03?

I actually like Joe Buck and Joe Morgan. I can't stand Sutcliffe, Jeff Brantley, or Tim McCarver. But the worst and most annoying baseball announcer of all-time is, by far, Chris Berman. His nicknames make me want to slide my backside up and down vigorously on a cheese grater. He is not funny and thinks he is and that is one of the worst qualities a man can have. Plus his fake Boston accent is completely unnerving. If tar-and-feathering ever comes back into fashion, let me know. I'm fisrt in line for this guy.

I was wondering how long it would take Shark to launch into a Berman rant. Check out his full fury unleashed on Berman at http://chach...y-shark.html.

If there was ever a game that Berman and McCarver did together...I think I'd jump off a roof.

I love Berman. He's a big teddy bear and his wit is spot on. And no - I don't like him "brokeback" style. Just respectful of my elders and those with more girth than me.
