The WBC, Why didn't we think of this before?

The World Baseball Championship is up for grabs, and it's anyone's guess as to who will be the victor. USA has lost to Canada, Venezuela has beaten Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico has beaten the Dominicana, and right now Korea is pummeling the USA in the seventh inning 7-1. While the Dominican's seem to be favorites with the US a close second, lesser talented team's have already upset them both. It's truly anyone's game.

This has been a fantastic addition to professional baseball. The energy that other countries have shown in their support for their teams is phenomenal. Some player's have been quoted as saying that they regret not playing in the WBC. Some player's are calling it the greatest experience of their life. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com quoted Chipper Jones as saying this:

"It's the best baseball experience of my life," Team USA third baseman Chipper Jones said. "Period. Bar none. It beats any World Series win, any World Series loss, any All-Star Game."

Those are some powerful words.

There has been a lot of excitement for nervous owners and GMs as well. The Seattle GM must be fairly happy with Adrian Beltre's performance thus far, hitting .500 with 4 home runs. Boston need not worry about David Ortiz as he has been hitting his usual bombs. Griffey has been sharp, Odalis Perez has pitched well, and players from Cuba and Japan have showcased some serious talent.

Overall it's a very exciting experience and it's only in the trial run. Future years should bring more excitement, more participation, and better games. The umpiring has been solid as well despite the bad call in the USA v. Japan game.

What is everyone else's opinion on the WBC so far?

This tournament has been a dream fulfilled for me. Plus the action has been awesome. Group 2 couldn't be tighter, as it has become single-elimination for the Caribbean teams. I'm interested to see how MLB front offices will react to what's gone on so far. Maybe some of the Korean players will get a look after how good they've played.

I wish I knew how it felt for the countries who's life is dedicated the game of baseball. Teams like the Domican, Puerto Rico, or even Cuba who actually gets to venture outside of their country to play. All I can say is Puerto Rico has the most amazing crowd of fans, they are truly fanatical.

The tournament is entirely ridiculous. It's played in March, when players are typically rusty or rehabbing minor injuries. Half the players that should be playing, at least for the US, PR, and DR teams, are not.

WBC is totally awesome!!! After we are done buying all of their best players, I wonder what would happen if any of these other counrties develop a baseball league better than our own. Will we watch there's, watch our own second-rate baseball, or ignore it like soccer?

I agree. I'm very happy to hear the players say how much they've enjoyed it.

i have a feeling this will be a big thing for baseball in the future. hopefully, they'll do this instead of the All-Star game since that has no meaning anyway. Next year I can see all the best players attending. I'm sure many regret not participating.

I'm a huge baseball fan and I didn't give a crap about the classic before it began. Now, as one of the few people in the country who likes sports but hates college basketball, I'm grateful to have something to focus on rather besided March f*cking Madness.
It's disappointing that some of the players opted out, but at the same time, it makes for a more excting tournament that the US and Dominican teams aren't as good as they could be. You have to judge the tournament and the games by those who are actually playing, rather than by who could have played.

What is ridiculous and needs to be changed is the pitch counts. It's just not a true game of baseball if the starter is limited to 60 pitches and everybody knows it. I understand that it's because it's March and a pitcher can't just go from long-tossing twice a week to throwing complete games. But it's still the biggest reason to move the tournie to November.

Totally agree with Juggernaut. The choice here is to watch College Basketball which has been castrated by the NBA as far as true talent is concerned, or watch these awesome players from all over the world show our pros how to do their jobs.

I definitely agree with juggernaut. If the Wbc becomes bigger and better, an alternate point in the season will have to be used in order for players to play at the top of their game.

The only problem with moving it to November is that you will have more players pull out due to fatigue than you did this year. There is no good time to play the Classic, someone will always find something to complain about. It's human nature.

Maybe, but nobody's really pulling out this year because of fatigue. It's because of fear. In November, most players will have had a month off to rest up and deal with their inuries. Maybe you lose some of the Championship and World Series players, but that would still leave most teams with a lot more options, particularly with pitchers. But you're right that no time is perfect. I imagine that eventually the WBC will be for baseball players what the World Cup is for soccer players: a HUGE F*CKING DEAL that they wouldn't miss unless they had to. And oddly enough, the WC is held after Premiership/Bundesliga/Serie A etc... seasons end.
