The Victim Culture and Atlanta: Two contrasting opinions

I think it is in poor taste to link to multiple blogs in a column on Armchair GM simply because the site was designed to share written opinions for those of us who aren't interested in the work behind a successful blog.

However, the two contrasting opinions in the columns shown below provide very well written and well thought out opinions on race issues, the city of Atlanta and the Michael Vick situation.

At this point, I'm conditioned to raise a skeptical eyebrow anytime I read an article, listen to a sports talk show, or hear sentiment about racist treatment of African Americans by the media.  The Tawana Brawley situation and the Duke Rape case taught us that there is social demographic in America that jumps to conclusions on issues of race faster than African Americans. But the author of the ESPN article weaves a convincing thread of examples as to why blacks in Atlanta feel that way.

I give the nod to the author of the Braves and Birds blog because: 1).  He's a lawyer, not a journalist and has a much more keen sense of legal issues. 2).  He lists specifc examples of where the ESPN article fails to make connections in order to prove a point. 3).  He accurately calls out the ESPN author for putting together a 2000+ word in order to provide an excuse for irrational logic.

I'd be very interested to hear any and all feedback.  I live in Atlanta (have for the past 5 years) and opinions are very, very heated on this matter.  See below for links to two columns.

I read the ESPN article a few days ago, and I was disappointed. It didn't really answer the question of why there are a lot of African Americans in Atlanta upset about Vick's treatment in the court of public opinion. It just provided more examples of the racist history in Georgia. While I can sort of understand (I'll never fully understand, I've never experienced racism first hand) how history plays a role in mistrust of higher authority and law enforcement, I don't like how it is still used. There comes a point where history has to be put in perspective, and the focus must center on the current state of things. I'm not saying to forget about what happened, about slavery or the struggle of the civil rights movement, but we won't make any more progress unless individuals can look at the world with a more open mind and not hold grudges. It goes both ways, black and white.
