The Unholy Mess That Is ESPN's First Cold And Ten Pizza Take

16
Vote

by Filthy McNasty

What was once ESPN's answer to the sickeningly cutesy, yet somewhat watchable morning show, has become an awkward disaster of mythical proportions. At least when the show was Cold Pizza, the format made some sort of sense. They had their little "news" stories, their interviews chock full of shameless advertising, and of course, the only reason anyone watched, 1st and 10 with the delightfully cold-hearted Skip Bayless.

They were based in New York City and the set resembled a nice and homey uptown loft, as opposed to Satan's neon newsroom. Now based in Bristol and renamed First Take, the show has gone for more of a Fox News feel and has adopted the same vomit inducing look as SportsCenter. Unfortunately for the show, these are the least of their problems. Since the changeover, there has been an ever revolving roster of hosts, ruining any chance of stability. The conspiracy theory is that this is due to the ominous cloud of a pending sexual harassment suit by a make-up artist against former Cold Pizza personalities, Woody Paige and Jay Crawford.

The days of that Road Rules chick and the ass fondling Woody are long gone, but it seems that his infatuation with the round and bouncy haunts First Take to this day. Crawford and Dana Jacobson are supposed to be the current hosts, but ever since the harassment charges were levied, Jacobson seems to have fallen off the face of the Earth (not necessarily a bad thing), with Crawford himself having gone mysteriously MIA in the last couple weeks. There's only so many times a host can go on "vacation" before it starts to smell fishy. By the way, it's a truly shocking development that a sports related network full of former athletes would ever have sexual shenanigans take place in its studios. Now what are we left with in the absence of Jay and Dana?

Michelle Bonner and the admittedly easy on the eyes Sage Steele having giggle-fests over Wonder Woman and Venus Williams' legs while poor Fred Hickman stands in the corner reading newspaper headlines and wondering why he ever signed up for that damned sports anchor contest in the first place. Seriously, these two can barely read a teleprompter and it feels like nails are being driven into every inch of my esophagus when they try to ad-lib. Don't get me wrong, it's not like the show was ever the pinnacle of infotainment, but there's only so many times I can watch the same SportCenter loop over and over; and when I switch over to the deuce (ESPN2), this is the last thing I need to start my day. ESPN probably won't be retooling the show again anytime soon, but once they find new permanent hosts or the old ones return, for the love of all that is holy, DO NOT hire make-up girls who mind giving lap dances and having their asses pinched by horny loudmouths with old balls! If I'm going to detest the show, I'd at least like a consistent face to blame.

And watch what? The 12th re-run of the hot dog contest? The old-timers soft ball game? John Kruk breaking down the home run derby as if it actually counted for something? If it wasn't for live games I wouldn't even own a TV.

I agree that they cover NY sports way too much, but you have to remember that most sports fans in America are New York sports fans (relatively speaking)...you would have to hold SportsCenter to that same standard...

I agree, I actually watched Cold Pizza on a reagular basis as a change of pace from Sports Center. Also I actually did enjoy Skip Bayless and have enjoyed speaking with him on several occasions. However the change of locations and host and all that has been a train wreck and transformed a mildly entertaining show to a complete piece of crap.

Until Woody Paige and Skip Bayless realize that they're not going to sleep with 20 year olds (without paying for it), they're going to suck.

True Paige only had a 1 yr deal to do Cold Pizza and left when that deal was done and that was back in the late fall or the winter.

ESPN is just falling off, period. If it weren't for appearances by John Clayton I wouldn't even watch it at all. (Besides ATH for my yelling therapy session)

More like the last 5-7 years. ESPN gets progressively worse with the passing of each day and has been doing so for a loooooooong time.

Cold Pizza was decent, I loved the lofty set they had. The best one I ever saw, and this was cool, in 2005, on the day before the NFL Draft, they had Mel Kiper and all the prospects in NYC on set, with Kiper giving out the hats of the teams he thought the players would be drafted. It was sweet.

I certainly DO NOT miss Dana Jacobson. She was horrible. Then again, Sage Steele may actually be even worse.

Exactly. Skip was funny when Woody was on the show as a counterweight, but

he's gone way off the deep end now. His rants about athletes and teams he loves or hates have become embarassing, Remember how Clemens was going to pitch the Yankees to a pennant? And then when he didn't it was his mysterious dugout mojo that made the Yankess improve, not young pitchers and A-Rod's hitting. On the negative side, his hate-rants against Tony Romo and LeBron James are neither insightful, nor funny, nor entertaining. I remember when Bayliss showed off his pushups on the show when it was Cold Pizza. There's the smoking gun, to Bayliss's wierdness: he's a shriveled up little health spa monkey who never played team sports and understands NOTHING about them; in fact, I suspect he doesn't particularly like them. Bring back Woody, team him with Stephen A, and get rid

of Bayliss, PLEASE.

Skipper Bayless should be G-O-N-E ! Gayless, errgh, Gaymore ? anyway, Skip should find a nice, cushy writing job in San Francisco where he can live in a lifestyle that is more accustomed to his obvious nature and where he can kiss Barry Bond's butt in person on a daily basis. Bayless hates everything that is Dallas simply because his "lifestyle" doesn't quite fit in the rugged Texas city. Anyway, the guy talks smack and suddenly disappears when his predictions don't pan out, what a female Skipper is. Anyway, I'm sick of Gaymore and his rainbow type rant which are neither accurate nor even entertaining.

1. Dana Jacobson is painful to watch. She's fat and increasing. She's got a bland personality. The only thing that she brings to ESPN is that it keeps ESPN in its PC universe of "not being sexist." Yeah, right.

2. Jay is not bad - he does a decent job in the role he has. But, only a mediocre plus.

3. Bayless does fine in his role as an antagonist even if I disagree with him most of the time - some of the guys in opposition are worthless (two live stews? Please).

4. Michelle Bonner does a good job. She's relatively attractive if you like them thick and shapely. And, she has a good personality.

5. Sage Steele is the best talent on the show. She's very easy on the eyes and has a very good personality. She does a fine job and should be the regular co-host on the show.

Yeah - all that sounds sexist - it's not about sex. But the "hosts" are not bringing any sort of great sports knowledge or insight. They are there for bringing entertainment and ESPN would never put on a 350 lb. dog ugly woman! So, if you want something that is enjoyable to watch with talented hosts - Steele should be the main co-host.

I suspect that a big part has to do with contracts and length of contracts.

But, ESPN is a monolithic environment and they don't realize that they are generally walking in lockstep with common assumptions (even when there is disagreement).

I remember Skip with his local newspaper column in Dallas when I moved there in the late 80's. His schtick is similar to many beat writers in that he is an "antagonistic" writer...he simply carried this over to his "debate" on the show. You take the unpopular stance and then sit back and field the onslaught. You gain popularity through notoriety. In the late 80's and early 90's he would trash the direction of the Cowboys from Landry to Johnson...from Schramm to Jones....of course we all saw how "right" he was when the Cowboys dominated the 90's.
