The US team at the World Baseball Classic would be...

7
Vote

by user Alex Holowczak

So Team USA was chosen. Here are the results.

  • C - Joe Mauer
  • 1B - Ryan Howard
  • 2B - Chase Utley
  • 3B - Alex Rodriguez
  • SS - Derek Jeter (c)
  • OF - Grady Sizemore, Lance Berkman, Vernon Wells
  • Utility - Jimmy Rollins, B.J. Upton, Adam Dunn, Brian McCann, Barry Bonds
  • SP - Josh Beckett, Jake Peavy, Brandon Webb, Roger Clemens, Roy Oswalt
  • RP - J.J. Putz, Billy Wagner, Scott Linebrink, Trevor Hoffman, David Aardsma, Joe Nathan
  • CP - Jonathan Papelbon

Batting order decided by the US coach would be:

  1. Grady Sizemore
  2. Derek Jeter
  3. Alex Rodriguez
  4. Ryan Howard
  5. Lance Berkman
  6. Joe Mauer
  7. Chase Utley
  8. Vernon Wells
  9. Pitcher

Jeter became captain because, he had the highest number of points of anyone that made the team in the captain vote.

There were a few problems:

  1. There was a tie at SS, between Jeter and Rollins. I put both in therefore, since some put them in utility too. Also, it seemed fair. Jeter got in the team because he was captain.
  2. There was a tie at OF, between Bonds and Wells, so I put both in. Since Bonds is getting a bit old now, I put him on the bench. No other reason.
  3. There was a tie at SP, between Oswalt, Kazmir and Hamels. I went for Oswalt because I wanted to.
  4. Papelbon/Wagner, it seemed most people wanted both, but couldn't decide which one should be closer and which was a reliever. So I put them in that order.
  5. People couldn't count, I asked for 6 RPs, most people only voted for 5. I blame Tylersalt, who broke the mould that people followed!
  6. Jose Reyes - American? Dominican Republic according to Wikipedia, just to let you know Demonboy.

Mm... I once miscounted at a school chess tournament. To win the First Form Tournament, I thought we only needed to draw. I told my player this. Yet actually, he needed to win. Fortunately, the didn't take the draw offers, thinking he needed to win having heard me incorrectly say we needed a draw! It ended up with me realising my mistake, and then telling my teammate, and he won the game to give us the win in the tournament. My gaffe nearly cost us the tourney. :( Never mind, eh!
