The U.S. Open We All Expected - Stricker and Monty

Move over Tiger Woods, there's a few new sheriffs in town. Well, we don't actually think that, but Winged Foot is taming Tiger at an alarming rate, as he is +9 through 27 holes.

Once you get past Steve Stricker (who lost his tour card a few years ago and had to resort to only selling his clothing line at Kohl's), you do have some big names that are easily used with the word "leaderboard."

Big Phil Mickelson is two strokes off the lead at even par, and EH! Mike Weir and Vijay Singh finished up their rounds yesterday at +1.

Even par could win this tournament, since it is only getting more difficult. One problem yesterday was that the greens were too slow, something not seen at a U.S. Golf Open probably ever. Leave it to USGA Executive Director, David Fay, to take care of that, he is like The Joker when it comes to fooling professional golfers.

Typically it's the top 75 and ties; As of 11:15 he's in 95 and two shots off the cut.

He probably won't, at this pace.

The U.S. Open usually has very high scores (Campbell won last year with Even Par), but this year looks a little ridiculous. I'll go with Furyk to win, although Monty would be a coup (and a bit ironic) given the contempuous relationship he has had with American golf fans.

In the 1974 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, Hale Irwin won with 7-over par. It was called "The Massacre at Winged Foot"

Is that the worst ever score in terms of relation to par to win a Major? I don't suppose it matters too much, in the end everyone has to play the same course. It's better to have +7 than -27 or something silly like that. You want to make a player work to win a Major. +6 won at Carnoustie in 1999... Van de Velde was five clear through 16, but went double-bogey-triple-bogey to end up losing to Paul Lawrie in a playoff. He famously took off his shoes and socks to play a shot from the burn... discretion proved the better part of valour on that day. It was well over par at the US Open a year or two ago when basically anybody that shot better than 80 on the last day won. It looks like +5 could win it this year.
