The Trouble With Americans

by user CaptHowdy

By now everyone will have heard about and formed an opinion on the MLS' aquisition of probably the hugest international soccer star in history, David Beckham.

Many see it as a ploy by MLS, many figure it's the Becks' way to get out and get something good while his skills deteriorate. It is a little of both I would think but a lot more.

People outside of North America always question the U.S. and Canada's facination with sports nobody else plays. It's easy to figure out. If you are an American sports fan, or team owner, or whatever you are you must be the best, period. Americans have no interest in coming in 'second' place or even really having to compete on the international stage. Take NFL football... the Super Bowl proclaims the annual winner as the 'World Champions'. I always howl with laughter whenever I see a league do that. "Hey it's the WORLD Champions of Aussie Rules Football"... you don't see that...only in America. Out of curiosity, is there a "World Champion of NASCAR" or a World Champion of Arena Football? I am kind of interested to know. I know there is no "World Champions of Canadian Football". But there is a "World Champion" in baseball even though I think only like Japan, Cuba, Canada, US and maybe a couple other places even play the thing.

Anyhow, I've lost my place. This Beckham thing. Reminds me an awful lot of the Wayne Gretzky deal that saw him leave godlike status in Edmonton to head down to L.A. All for money, and what the Kings and NHL really wanted, promo for the league in a country that had absolutely no interest in hockey.

Whenever non-North Americans ask why can't we get into real international sports like Soccer and Rugby...you know stuff that EVERYONE except Canada and the US seem to care about? I always like to answer 'Don't wish for that, that is the reason you still have star players in your countries. If the U.S. gets interested they will suck up all the key stars. Look at hockey, Do any of the REAL stars in hockey from Europe play in the Swedish Elite League, etc.? Would the NFL really send a good player to the NFL Europe? If a star Japanese baseball player is that good...does he stay to play for the home country? No. And that is why all you international soccer fans should be at your wits ends and try like hell to protect your sport from getting too interesting to the North American market. Because before too long, there'll be too much money in it for any good players to not be playing for a U.S. team. They may not ever wish to compete internationally anymore... Look at the non-importance Hockey is internationally to a decent amount of NHL players.

Americans have the money, they like to spend it, and they want to win. If they don't get the opportunity to spend and win all the time, their interest wanes quite fast, unless the other winning team is an American one as well.

P.S. Americans... you don't like Rugby... please remember that. And by the way, could you please lose more interest in hockey? Canada wants their NHL teams back soon!

I think "feetball" fans are elitist. They think their game is the "world's game".

in America, we have the freedom to like whatever we choose; and we choose to like the sports that have the biggest and best brainwashing ploys, I mean marketability... a.k.a ACTION! WHY else would SportsCenter be so popular? It's all action, no substance.

As long as soccer/football is played without the use of hands and has next-to-know scoring we won't like it. Beckman or no Beckman... Hockey isn't exactly flourishing here, but it has recovered a bit because scoring is up.

If Michael Jordan didn't score 30+ a game, if Babe Ruth didn't hit 714 home runs, would we Americans ever have loved them? We like scoring, action and excitement.

Watching a soccer team try to score is like trying to photograph lightning. Great when it happens, but otherwise a bunch of standing around getting soaked.

This topic has been worn out more than Vince Wilfork's spandex. Your not going to change America or the American view on sports. Just because we don't like all the same sports as the rest of the world doesn't mean we are any less of a sports country than other places in the world. Like Manny said, we like the action, and I'm not sure why everyone from other places seem to have such a problem with that.

Oh there is action in other sports, and I am only in Canada not some far off land so I love Canadian and U.S. Football n' stuff too. But it's just eerie when I see how Soccer, Cricket, Rugby and such are non-existant in N.A. The big four are entirely new. And if you could tell me something...what is wrong with Formula 1 Racing? Not enough American's winning it so yet again the U.S. creates their own, NASCAR!

NASCAR really isn't all that popular here. It has a distinct group of fans and I would say that the average American couldn't care less about any sort of car racing, and the only reason anybody watches the Daytona 500 for instance is the big crashes. NASCAR has been around for quite a while, so I can't say whether it was formed because we sucked at Formula One or if there was just enough demand for it and enough drivers, but my guess would be the latter.

You also have to remember that most Formula One races are held over seas and, as you would know being from Canada, it's not like it's something we can easily follow. It's not on TV so without really making an effort online, it doesn't jump out at us like the "Big Four".

bobby joe jim bob- only a distinct group of fans?! wtf are you talking about? that's like saying, there is a distinct group of fans that enjoy baseball. tell that to the advertisers of nascar and all racing in the usa. they would laugh their asses off at your ignorant statement. i really don't like racing, but do understand that it is extremely popular in some areas of the united states.

Also, are you saying that in other countries, it's okay to come in second place? The beauty of sports is that everyone wants to win and that's what everyone sets out to do in every play, every game and every season. If in other countries teams don't set out to win, they aren't true competitors.

Hmm, your comments interest me. I think what I get from them is a sense that Americans need instant gratification and the quick win. They won't stick around long enough to build up to it. Which is weird considering the huge tradition of NCAA College football where some teams go forever without a bowl berth.

I may have misinterpreted your comment in the article a little bit, but I was referring to the fact that when your team is in position and can possibly win, you can't call yourself a true sports fan if you are happy with coming in second. When a team is rebuilding, that is a little different because these teams are looking toward the future, and if they seem to have a quality gameplan and are moving forward, you can't be too disappointed just beacause you don't win.

I think Bobby is right. America doesn't care so much about quick fixes as much as winning as a whole. For example, Mike Nolan just came into the 49ers organization 2 yaears ago (maybe 3, i forget), and he's rebuilding from what was a good team, then awful in the early millenium and now respectable again (they might be dangerous and win the west next year?!). I'm sure 49ers fans are happy w/ Nolan and they didn't really sniff the playoffs last year and absolutely not the year before.

Think about the Titans and Jeff Fisher, same thing applies and the reason he's not gonna get fired is because he is turning that team around (VY anyone?)

America doesn't accept teams that suck, they want teams that, even if they do suck, they are trying to get better (Marvin Lewis and the Bengals until 2 seasons ago). And even then, fans of teams that have perenally sucked (See Chicago Cubs or for that matter the Red Sox in a lesser sense) are still fans...

I think indoor soccer would be a lot more appealing to Americans than "feetball" itself. Plenty of scoring, kind of like hockey -- but more accessable, because you don't have to skate, it's not on ice. If Arena Football can have a national TV contract, let's give Arena Feetball a chance, too!

I love Lacrosse. I'd give indoor soccer a chance. The NFL is the World Champion because I'll take the Super Bowl champion over the Grey Cup Champion in a 3 game series. 1 Candian rules, 1 american rules, and 1 hybrid rules. The NBA is the world champion because most of the Great players in the world come to play for the NBA. A lot of good Olympic teams have NBA players on them. MLB? The best league in Japan is between AAA and Major league ball. Not even close

Because in America, you can do ANYTHING! You can coach a Super Bowl team if you're black (had to do it), you can play with the boys in golf or racing if you're a girl, you can even be born an abandoned crackbaby and become a Huge success in music or movies and you can go from homeless to owning your own multi-billion dollar business.

You can be dead broke one day and treated like royalty the next.

WHY? Because in America all you need is determination and to be good/lucky enough.

In other places in the world, you are who you are and that's it! The poor are born poor and always will be poor and learn to accept it. The royalty is born royalty and always will be royalty. You don't climb social classes for any reason.

In America we all think we are rich bastards, we know rich bastards or daydream of being rich bastards, so we act like rich bastards as entitlement. Turn on the TV all you see is rich bastards.

The rest of the world accepts their fate... which is why losing seems palatable.

I'm not saying "what is right or wrong", I'm just saying "it is"

captain howdy doody- first off, don't lecture americans (and by that i mean the united states of course) about sports. america is a huge country and has many sports, we do not limit ourselves to one or two sports. we have fans of multiple sports at many levels (high school, college, pro). and to say that americans don't have the patience and want instant gratification is ludicrous and shows how ignorant you must be. golf is on tv and draws huge ratings, tennis, billiards, nascar, baseball. many of these sports don't have action all of the time. i have been to thrilling baseball games that ended 2-1 or 1-0. and why shouldn't america claim to be world champions of baseball? they are! we have the best players here, granted many of them are now coming in from latin america.

MLB has the most talented players in the world. NFL has the most talented players in the world. NBA has the most talented players in the world. NHL has the most talented players in the world.....and if we had room for another major sport like soccer, MLS would have the most talented players in the world!!

We simply don't have room for another "major" sport in america. don't forget we have all of the top four sports at the college level as well as golf, tennis, car racing and the biggest spectator sport - horse racing.

Agreed, for the most part. I think there is room, there is a whole market of potential soccer fans, people who have immigrated from their various countries where soccer is the primary sport.

For all of it's supposed failures in the US, the MLS has done quite well in the few yrs of it's existence. Their average specator draw nears what the NHL and the NBA draw, despite the fact that they pay their players a fraction of what NHL and NBA players make.

With Beckham coming, you can see that starting to change in MLS. a) they've changed the salary structure to lure better players, b) beckham singlehandedly provides a 100% increase to the marketability of the MLS. So long as they don't devote all their resources and pin all their hopes on these superstarts, and balance that out with spending on youth developement, the MLS has a chance to continue it's growth into a formidable league.

I think you first need to understand what sports are about before you can hope to understand the dynamics of American sports. It's not all about winning and instant gratification. If it were, there wouldn't be any fans at a Royals/Devil Rays game. But guess what? There are. Not a lot, no, but they are there. And every team that doesn't win a championship will still have hundreds of thousands of fans, even millions of fans pay to come watch them in any given season. Americans like their sports based on the sport itself, not the teams. Teams are secondary with rooting interests usually determined by where you grew up or who your family rooted for. Not liking soccer has nothing to do with winning or losing...it has to do with soccer being bloody boring. One thing I will agree with you on, however, we will take your best players in whatever we decide to pick up. Don't hate us just because everyone wants to be come be rich and famous in the greatest country in the world.

Interestingly enough Alex, what you're also describing was America's fascination with cars, they became extremely popular by the 1960's and as a result of the oil crisis (70's) and now the war, the inconvenient truth and effeciency we are experiencing a decline in cars as we know it. Especially those who enjoy muscle cars and fast cars in general...interesting how that all works...
