Today sees the release of Will Ferrell’s Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby which is expected to open around $50 million and end up being the #1 grossing sports movie of all time. Here’s what they’re up against according to IMDB:

  1. The Waterboy (1998) - $161 million - This is the last funny movie that Adam Sandler made (aside from Mr. Deeds)
  2. The Longest Yard (2005) - $158 million - Please see comments above. Michael Irvin should stick to doing blow in hotel rooms with strippers.
  3. Jerry Maguire (1996) - $153 million - Spawned what might be the most cliched catch phrase ever. And only vaguely about sports anyway.
  4. Rocky IV (1985) - $127 million - Gave us Ivan Drago and killed Apollo Creed
  5. Rocky III (1982) - $122 million - Mickey dies, Mr T does his thing. Absolutely classic
  6. Seabiscuit (2003) - $120 million - Spiderman rides a horse that is owned by The Dude
  7. Rocky (1976) - $117 million - Sylvester Stallone won an Oscar for the screenplay. Not a type-o.
  8. Remember The Titans (2000) - $115 million - Denzel plays a complicated man, again.
  9. Dodgeball (2004) - $114 million - Ben Stiller makes really bad movies.
  10. A League Of Their Own (1992) - $107 million - Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell share the screen. Like a prequel for The View
  11. Million Dollar Baby (2004) - $100 million - Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman play old men, again.

Other notables:

Nacho Libre (2006) - $78 million - Jack Black was born to play a Mexican wrestler
Coach Carter (2005) - $67 million - Tough coach takes on disadvantaged, urban teens.
Cinderella Man (2005) - $61 million - Russell Crowe beats people up. Not sure if he uses a phone or not.
The Rookie (2002) - $71 million - Dennis Quaid plays an old guy, again.
Slap Shot (1977) - $28 million - The Hanson brothers take the world by storm.
Hoosiers (1986) - $28 million - Tough coach takes on disadvantaged, urban rural teens.
Caddyshack (1980) - $39 million - BEST MOVIE EVER
Caddyshack II (1988) - $11 million - There is no God.
The Color Of Money (1986) - $52 million - When Tom Cruise was still kinda cool and Paul Newman was just starting to learn about salad dressing

I wish numbers were recorded for number of people buying tickets because top-grossing is misleading. Movie tickets cost $8 now, as opposed to $3 in 1980.

$8?!?!?!?! Where are you buying tickets? I paid 10.50 last time I went to a movie.

One of the many good things about still being in college... $5 movie tickets with a student ID.
