The Top 5 NBA Stars

Regardless of age or salary, who are the five most valuable players out on the court? Which players would you take first if you could choose anyone in the NBA?

1. Dwyane Wade

Between LeBron, Carmelo, and DWade, Wade was the first to win a championship. Not only was he the first to win, but the Heat have made the playoffs in all three of Wade’s seasons. Like Kobe, he had the help of Shaquille O’Neal; although, the help came more in the playoffs than during the season, as Shaq only played 59 regular season games. Also, 2006 was Shaq’s lowest scoring season of his career at 20.0 points per game. Wade picked up the majority of the scoring duty with 27.2 per game. In the playoffs, Wade scored 28.4 per game and Shaq only 18.4. According to Basketball-Reference, the most similar player to Wade in both 2005 and 2006 was Kobe Bryant. When not scoring, Wade is averaging 8.3 assists per game this season.

2. Kobe Bryant

Last season, Bryant won his first scoring-title, recording an impressive 35.4 points per game. Everyone remembers his historic 81-point performance, in which Kobe scored two-thirds of the Lakers points. Despite his enormous talent, Kobe has doubters and critics everywhere. Bryant’s pundits call him a ball-hog (averaged 4.5 assists in 2006/ 6.0 in 2005) or claim he never would have won a championship without Shaq. Well, how many NBA championships did Shaq win in Orlando? Zero. How many NBA championships did Shaq win in the three years on the Lakers before Kobe became a star? Zero. Kobe was every bit as responsible for the Laker dynasty as Shaquille O’Neal. The fact-of-the-matter is that Kobe Bryant stands alone as the best player in the NBA outside of Lebron James.

3. LeBron James

Despite a recent post by an Armchair user claiming "Bron Bron" did not have the "facial expressions" of a champ (yes, I am confused by it myself), he is hands-down the best player on the court, no matter who the Cavs are playing. In only his fourth season, King James has amassed nine triple-doubles and 63 double-doubles. He also boasts a 26.6 career scoring-average with 6.6 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game. The Cavaliers made their first playoff appearance in the James-era last season, but expect many more to come.

4. Dirk Nowitzki

In both 2006 and 2005, Nowitzki led the NBA in Win Shares. Dirk is the rare 6’11’’ forward/ center who shoots 40% from 3-point range and 90% from the free throw line. He also rebounds 10 per game, scores 26 and chips in a block every now-and-then. Nowitzki is one of the most unique players in NBA history and arguably the most valuable one in the league.

5. Kevin Garnett

Ironically, KG compares favorably to Nowitzki’s style. Give Garnett a three-point shot or Nowitzki some defense and you have the most complete player ever. Garnett scores less frequently than Nowitzki, only 21.3 per game for his career, but rebounds more with thirteen or fourteen per game in recent years and records about twice as many assists. What Garnett lacks in offensive efficiency, he makes up in every aspect of the game.

Honorable Mentions

Amare Stoudemire, Pau Gasol, Chris Paul, Allen Iverson, Gilbert Arenas

Um...Tim Duncan? For his career, Duncan's averaged 22.1 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. The guy is a guaranteed double-double. He's a 6'11" forward that moves well with the ball and has a hook shot that basically unstoppable. He plays defense better than most of the players you've listed here, averaging 2.5 block per game for his career (Dirk Nowitzki, despite his height, has never averaged more than 1.5 in a season). Oh yeah, and he's led his team to THREE NBA championships. You have 10 players listen here, and only two of them have title rings, and only one of them has more than one. As with Roy Oswalt, Tim Duncan seems to be one of the most underrated players in his sport. He has to be in the top five, but how do you not even have him on the list of honorable mentions?

You are right, he has a very good argument to make the list. I left him off because of his "dissapointing" season last year, which I realize was mostly due to an injury. His blocks per game seem to be in a decline. I guess it came down to me thinking he was going to get worse faster than any of these other guys.

He had a disappointing season stats-wise, but I think you also have to take into account more than the injury. When he first got there, it was basically him and an old, hobbled David Robinson leading the team. The longer he's been there, the more help he's gotten. He now has Michael Finley, Robert Horry and Brent Barry coming off the bench. He has Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker on the perimeter. His minutes have been in steady decline, but I think that has as much to do with the fact that they can now AFFORD to rest him, where they couldn't before. I'd expect his personal numbers to go down a bit when he has that much help, especially when you watch him play and realize how often he passes out of double teams to give someone else the chance to score.

And, despite his disappointing season, he led his team the Western Conference Finals and was within a few horrific calls of making it to another NBA Championship Series.

Actually, the Spurs only made it to the West Semis last year, but Duncan still needs to be on this list. True, he had a subpar year in 05-06, but even at a lower level of production, he was still one of the 10 most valuable players in the league -- and he was up to his old tricks in the playoffs, throwing down a dominant 25.8 PPG and 10.5 RPG. And this year, he's flashing shades of his MVP form again. I'd take Duncan over Amare or Gasol, frankly.

I think Pau Gasol has Tim Duncan-like potential, unfortunately he had to go and break his foot, so we'll see what happens when he comes back. Manny would agree with me on the Amare nod, although he is not back to 100% himself.

Sorry, you're right about the semis. It just felt like the finals and should have been the finals were it not for the ridiculous way they sede playoff teams in the NBA. I'm glad they fixed that this year.

Tim, is the most underated player in the NBA. He is always overlooked despite being a dominating force in the league. He played all of last season on 1 foot, and still managed to take his team to 1 back Manu foul of the NBA finals.

Hey, the Grizzlies are off to a 4-13 start without Pau in the lineup. That's not conclusive evidence, but it's evidence nonetheless.

I've got alot of beef with this list, I mean, LeBron topping it over Kobe is ludacris. Ask any coach or gm in the league who the best player is, it's Kobe. Lebron can't play defence, Lebron can't create his own shot and until he can create for himself, or help on defence, he doesn't even deserve to be in the same category as Kobe, no one in the league does. Kobe is far and away the best player in the league. Also, where in god's name is Steve Nash? Back to Back MVP, making all his teammates better, and you put Gil and CP3 in front of him? You're nuts! Also, you're missing the most dominating centre in the game right now with Yao Ming. The race isn't even close, Yao is the TOP centre in the league. Dwayne Wade is only as good as he is because David Stern loves him enough to give him all the calls he need to win a championhip. He's the only guy getting away with carrying the ball right now, and I love all the phantom fouls he gets! No one hits him, but he still gets the call! It must be magic!

My top five would be: 1. Kobe Bryant 2. Lebron James 3. Steve Nash 4. Tim Duncan

5. Yao Ming

don't know about Yao in the top 5, but I agree with your Nash observation.

HELLO? Will all of the TWO-time MVPs on this list please stand up?

That's what I thought...
