The Straw that Broke the Hamel's Back?

From my blog, The Lazy Athlete

It's never a good idea when you analyze a team's injury problems by stating who has not been on the disabled list. And the number of Phillies on that ever decreasing list is down to nine with the addition of Cole Hamels to the 15 day D.L. And so far, the Phillies have shown more resilience than a Brawny paper towel commercial. But now they have lost two straight series to the N.L. worst Pirates and the rapidly slumping - or I should say, previously rapidly slumping - Dodgers. They are now 5 1/2 games behind the Mets and 1 1/2 behind the Padres for the Wild Card, and without their best remaining player, Hamels, for the next week and a half, it looks entirely possible that the Phils will not be able to fight off this latest injury.

Take a look at the Phils current rotation: Jamie Moyer, Kyle Kendrick, J.D. Durbin, and Fabio Castro. What do you notice? Well, besides the fact that they currently only have four starting pitchers, it's blindingly clear that a team with this group of arms should be no where near a playoff berth. Jimmy Rollins stated during spring training that the Phillies were the team to beat in the NL East. Bold words, yes. But if J-Roll made that statement knowing who would be pitching in mid-August, the Phillies would need a new shortstop because Rollins would have been checked into Belleview.

But Rollins was looking at a much different rotation. One that actually had six arms. Only Moyer remains. Forget the injuries that the Phillies offense has endured this season. Going from a staff of Brett Myers, Freddy Garcia, Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer, Adam Eaton, and Jon Lieber to what we see now, really is incredible. But through it all, the Phillies remained in contention.

While they are still very much in it, the loss of Cole Hamels during the most important stretch of the year, the odds are becoming very long against the Phils. There is only so much a team can take. And over the last two series, we might have seen this team cross that line. This is not a "Stick a fork in them" article (even though maybe it should be) because the Phillies have already gotten through so much, maybe they can keep it together for two more weeks. Why two weeks? Because Cole Hamels, Chase Utley, and even Michael Bourn should all be back to help the Phillies make one final push toward their first playoff appearance since 1993.

The Phils currently sit 5 back behind the Mets, right? Exactly one month ago, with most of time having Utley on the DL, Philly was still 5 games back. It's all in a matter of how well a team can work together with the players that they have. Cole Hamels is on the DL. OK, so? Utley has been on the DL for how long? It's not only one or two players that make a contribution.

One injury after another can eventually break a team's will to keep fighting. And to be perfectly honest, that pitching staff wasn't very good before hamels went down. I don't know, I guess I'm just lowering my expectations so I don't get hurt at the end.

They are not out of it yet at all. 7 games with the Mets still to play, 6 with the Braves, Nationals, and Marlins. 4 with Colorado, 3 with St.Louis and they begin a 3 game set with the padres tomorrow. the are very much in the race and Utley is back for the Mets series and is making his rehad start tomorrow. The have very good chance again especially with who they play.

Dude, I am a Phillies fan and I have to admit - you got to stick a fork in this team for they are done. Too many injuries. Too many mistakes that led to losses in April. It is over for another year. But hey, Eagles start up for real in 2 weeks!

Saddest part about the Phillies pitching rotation is that the only survivor of season opening rotation has pitched back to back lousy games and now has an ERA of over 5.00. They have went from having one of the best rotations in baseball to one of the worst. Still would help if Ryan Howard would start hitting home runs again.

I hate to see a team, even a team I hate, have their entire season defined by injuries. It just seems to unfair. The fact that I love the Phillies makes it doubly frustrating. That said, the Phillies' bats are SO dangerous that I still think they're a genuine Wild Card contender with the team as is. They may not be able to win a playoff series with that rotation, but all you have to do is look at the defending champions to remind yourself just how crazy baseball is.

Are they out of it...no exactly...

Its gonna take a lot of luck (and hitting) for the next week or so...they need to win 5 of the next 6, realistically, to stay in it....

From there...Hamels, Eaton...and yes Garcia can return...those guys will be key starts...Eaton needs to figure out what the hell is wrong with him...

But Utley is the key...they'll hit again if he's around (and hitting)
