The State of the Orioles

by user Baltimoresports247

With Bud Selig giving a State of the Union address tomorrow, I feel it appropriate to address and make suggestions for the floundering Baltimore Orioles.

VP’s of Baseball Operations Jim Duquette and Mike Flanagan said last year that they have put a plan in place to make the Orioles competitive in two to three years. At this rate, that will not happen. We have a solid core of young players (Roberts, Markakis, Guthrie, Bedard), but half of them will probably be in different uniforms in the coming years. Erik Bedard hates it here and his contract is up soon. Andy MacPhail HAS to make a trade this season to calm the wolves, so he’ll have to trade somebody. Hey, you’ve gotta trade talent to get talent, and I’m not necessarily opposed to that. Recently, I had the state of mind that all four of those guys are untouchable, but now I’m beginning to think that the only one who can’t be traded is Jeremy Guthrie (yes, even Nick Markakis).

The Orioles line up is littered with aging veterans who are past their prime, such as Melvin Mora, Aubrey Huff, Miguel Tejada, and Jay Gibbons. I’m beginning to think that Jay Gibbons may have been involved the steroid scandal. Of course, this is purely speculation, but has anyone else noticed that his forearm and bicep size have shrunk (not to mention his batting average and power numbers)? We need to drop these guys like a bad habit and quick…it’s time to clean out the Warehouse and get some value in the process.

With the minor league system being a complete travesty, besides J.R. House and Matt Weiters, and Weiters isn’t even signed yet, the O’s are going to need to make a splash in the free agency market. But is this offseason the time to do it? We’re not going to win next year either, so I say wait until 2009 to make some serious moves in free agency. Look at the available players in ’09…Vlad Guerrero (we should have him anyway), Andruw Jones, John Lackey, Jake Peavy, Brad Penny, Johan Santana, Jason Bay, Adrian Beltre, Miguel Cabrera, Matt Holiday, Magglio Ordonez (maybe…I think he has an option that season), Reed Johnson. Wow…mark my words, the 2009 baseball offseason will be the most interesting few months in sports EVER. Not to mention, the contracts of Tejada, Huff, and Mora (among others) will be up, so that will give us an opportunity to clean house. Obviously, the O’s won’t sweep up all of those guys, but they should make moves to get 3 or 4 young talented free agents in ’09.

In short, the State of the Union is pretty crappy, but it can be fixed, and it SHOULD be fixed because the fans of Baltimore deserve it. Remember, Peter Angelos won’t live forever.

The Orioles are the anti-Moneyball. They seem to just like spending money on big free agents and in trades to make their fans think they're doing something (Tejada, Huff, Hernandez, Millar, Patterson, Payton, Benson, Baez, Wright...). If salaries equalled talent, they'd have a pretty good crew here. Seems to me like they need to build from within.

The problem with that is that the minor league system is god awful...we have nothing to build with, literally...so we need some young proven talent to build around and then address the minor league system

Yeah, I don't know much about the O's farm system, but if they can't build from the inside, they need to be much smarter with who they spend for, rather than just putting together these patchwork teams and wasting money.

Oddly enough the O's have shown me some promise in the last few weeks. That team is not as bad as I thought.

I seriously thought that there was no hope for them to not get last place with Tejada's injury and the 10 game losing streak, but it seems like they really are a team that can win some baseball games.

They do show some promise...which leads me to think was Sam Perlozzo really the problem with the O's recently? Dave Trembley is doing a hell of a job!

Hate to burst the bubble but they've been streaky all year. Maybe firing Perlozzo gave them a bit of a spark, but don't get your hopes up that they'll continue to play well. Look at their results from this year and you'll find nothing but long streaks of W's, followed by longer streaks of L's.

It's amazing how far the Orioles franchise has fallen in the last decade; it just goes to show you that someone with a lot of power but no brains (Angelos) can screw things up in a hurry.

No Perlozzo was a by the book/by the stats manager, and sometimes that got him into problems. Trembley goes on gut instinct which helps out some. Also everyone says the mood around the team is different with Trembley at the helm the players want to play and compete to win.

J.R. House opted out of his Orioles contract on July 2nd since part of his contract included a clause he would be with the Orioles by July 1st. Didn't really matter though since he is 2 for 19 in majors and has only played 10 major league games since signing with Pirates in 1999. He was a better football player throwing 10 touchdown passes in state championship game but even his football skills diminished by the time he played a year for West Virginia University throwing a grand total of four passes as a third string quarterback.

Yeah I heard rumors of that but have yet to find a place that has officially confirmed it, including AAA Norfolk's website...he's still on the roster and there has been no news break about this...what is your source?

Jay Gibbons has really tanked after hitting 26 homers two years ago. Last year he hit 13 homers and has only 5 this year and is hitting only .212. Melvin Mora on the other hand hit 16 homers in 624 at bats and has 12 already this season in 297 at bats. He is hitting 74 points worse than his career best .340 season in 2004 hitting only .266 this season.
