The Smartest fans in the game

Who are the smartest fans in baseball? If you ask most people they'll name the fans of a team in the northeast like the Yankees, Red Sox, or Phillies. How exactly do people measure this? And where did they come up with these things? I know for an absolute fact that your average Yankee fan is not one of the smartest fans in baseball. Ask 10 guys in a Yankees hat a couple of questions. A couple of my favorites to ask are "Who was the team's shortstop before Derek Jeter" and "Name two guys in the bullpen besides Mariano Rivera." 8 of the 10 "fans" that you ask won't be able to answer that question. What about Sox fans? Whenever I hear someone say that the Red Sox have the smartest fans, I can't help but laugh. Loyal? Sure. Passionate? Definitely. But smart? The vast majority of Sox fans make me embarrassed to admit that I'm also a fan. If you listen to enough jackasses call into WEEI or read a message board frequented by Sox fans then you probably know what I mean. When someone says that Doug Mirabelli is the best backup catcher in the game and that Gabe Kapler could be a solid starter on any of the 29 other teams (when wearing their "Yankees Suck" shirt and pink hat while standing in line to get Bronson Arroyo's CD) then you know damned well that they're not very bright. And have you ever tried to listen to a Yankee fan bicker with a Sox fan? With apologies to the Dodgers/Giants and Cubs/Cards, the Sox/Yankees rivalry is the biggest in baseball. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise. But when two fans go at it, they'll talk themselves in circles for hours and never bring up a valid point because they'll both be busy saying things like "The Sox always choke in August!" and "Oh yeah, well the Yankees buy their rings!"

So how do you measure the intelligence of a fanbase? As far as I know, no one has ever interviewed every baseball fan, measured their IQ and marked down their loyalty. When someone answers that question they'll go with the Yankees or the Red Sox because they have a lot more fans than most teams and everytime you look in New York or Boston you see a packed stadium filled with passionate fans who are always ready to give their opinion about the game. If their opinion is a dumb one though, should they really get credit for being a smart fan?

Personally I think the big market teams are at a disadvantage. People, in general, are stupid, stupid creatures. We may be the most intelligent species on the planet, but I really don't think we're that much better off than monkeys or dolphins. When you get a large group of people together, chances are that most of the people in that group aren't going to be very bright. Also, for some reason, the dumber the person is, the louder they tend to be. Think back to your school days. Who were the class clowns and the loudest kids? More than likely it was that dumbass who was just scraping by with a D+ and ended up flunking out of highschool so he could get a job at Wendy's. There are plenty of exceptions, but chances are pretty good that the ones who are so willing to give their opinions are probably the ones that should keep their mouth shut. "It's better to be thought of as a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt"

I'd assume that the teams with the smaller fanbases have more intelligent fans. For one thing, there are less of them so there are less chances for the dumbasses to be out and about. And they have less bandwagon fans. There's nothing worse than a girl in a pink Red Sox hat who has been a diehard fan forever (since 2004) and couldn't pick Manny Delcarmen out of a lineup...but knows that Jason Varitek has a nice ass. If you are a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, then you are a FAN. A person who follows a team that sucks that much, but remains loyal is a person to be admired. I'm guessing they know their shit. Small market teams and bad teams may not have very vocal fans, but they probably have some pretty smart fans.

I don't have respect for humanity in general so maybe that's my problem. I can't say for sure who the smartest fans in the game is, but I can tell you that it is a fact that the Red Sox and Yankees don't have them.

What do you think about your fanbase? I honestly don't know any Pirates fans.

I am not surprised you don't know many Pirates fans:)...Well, there are few Pirates fans, but those who are actual fans truly love them. I have been to about ten or so games this year, and the excitement for players like Freddy Sanchez, Jose Castillo, Jason Bay and others is great. Also, fans are smart enough that they have been booing Burnitz during the lineup announcements for awhile. Apparently, the fans are smart enough to know Burnitz was not a good signing. After being teased and lied to, I think Pirates fans are finally catching on.

At least they're showing promise for the upcoming years...What do you think of the average Brewers fan?

Well, there are less of the people that say they're fans just to include themselves in something. Really, any casual fan wouldn't jump at the opportunity to cheer for a team with a losing history. From what I've gathered through meeting fellow Brewer fans is that they are all very informed. There aren't a lot of Brewer fans that I know of who don't follow them day in and day out, but it's the ones that live and die with the team and in the process do a lot more dying than living that get my respect (or mutual sympathy).

There are exceptions to every rule, of course. I mean, I'm a Sox fan and I'm plenty smart :-)

I think all teams have some smart fans and some stupid fans. Teams like the Red Sox and Yankees probably have a lot more stupid fans actually showing up at the park because it's the "cool" thing to do. On the other hand, fans who come to watch a mediocre-to-bad team must be doing it because they love the game, and that would assume they know something about that which they love.

One way to measure fan IQ is to pay attention to how they react to things that happen during the course of a game. One thing that sticks out in my mind is how Arizona fans booed when Mariano Rivera hit a batter in the 9th inning of the 2001 World Series. Doesn't get much more stupid than that.

Exactly, most teams have a mix. The most popular teams have more stupid fans in terms of percentage, if only because there are a number of people who call themselves their fans but aren't even really fans of the sport, let alone the team.

That's definately true, which is why Sox fans and Yankee fans come off looking so stupid. There are plenty of intelligent fans in both fanbases, but stupidity is the majority. The bandwagon jumpers, and both teams have plenty of those, make everyone look bad.

See, F-Man, we can agree! Yeay! :-) I mean, I would say generally the Cards, Indians, Red Sox, and Yankees have some of the smartest fans, but that's just kind of a gut instanct, not really based on anything, to be honest.

Interesting article though I'm a little confused by your use of "smartest fans" to discuss the relative diehardness of the fans. Clearly teams like the Yankees and Red Sox, like the Bulls in the Jordan era and Notre Dame football for decades and so forth, have more fans who don't know shit because they are just hopping on the bandwagon. I'm a Yankee fan (Tony Fernandez; Scott Proctor and Ron Villone for two), and have no argument that there are plenty of know-nothings scattered about the stadium who proclaim their Yankee love with a fierceness borne of little knowledge of or real interest in the game of baseball. Just as there are at Fenway and probably at Comiskey (or whatever corporate shill name for the White Sox stadium)this year. That's more a question of your passion than your intelligence.

Congratulations, you're the 1 of 10. But I'm also a little confused. I didn't compare intelligence to passion. I didn't even imply that. I don't think the two have anything to do with eachother, really. A passionate idiot is still an idiot.

"There's nothing worse than a girl in a pink Red Sox hat who has been a diehard fan forever (since 2004) and couldn't pick Manny Delcarmen out of a lineup...but knows that Jason Varitek has a nice ass." - That's not a question of how intelligent someone is, it's how passionately they follow the game. A commenter above talked about Arizona fans booing when Mariano Rivera hit someone with a pitch and that's a lack of intelligence. Cheering when someone steals a base with two out, down two in the ninth is stupid, not knowing who Manny Delcarmen is says more about how avidly you follow the game. But I totally agree with you, a passionate idiot is still an idiot.

Personally I see that as stupidity. Maybe not in the traditional get good grades/has common sense kinda way, but as far as baseball smarts go. When someone talks about a smart fan, they mostly mean that the fan knows his stuff. To me a smart fan is someone that knows about the game of baseball and can have an intelligent conversation about the game.

I agree. A smart baseball fan is one who knows his or her team as well as a good deal about other teams around the league (not to mention the ins and outs of the game itself). If you were having a test to determine the smartest baseball fan, the one who knew who Manny Delcarmen is would win over the one who doesn't.

The question is, how do you become a smart baseball fan in the first place? By watching the game, of course. And if you are watching games every day, you are probably very passionate as well. So I do think that passion has a direct correlation to intelligence.

Just try talking to some Sox fans. There are some that will watch every single game, but it's almost as if anytime someone mentions a player that doesn't player in Boston it goes in one ear and out the other. Boston fans are passionate as hell about the Red Sox. Most of them are clueless as hell when it comes to the other 29 teams.
