"There aren't that many African-American quarterbacks, so we have to do a little bit extra, Because the percentage of us playing this position, which people didn't want us to play, is low, so we have to do a little extra." Those are the comments, that got every ones attention.
Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Donovan McNabb doesn't back down. Saying race is still a factor in the NFL, is going to be news.
"Let me start by saying I love those guys(Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and others)," McNabb said. "But they don't get criticized as much as we do. They don't." In his interview on "Real Sports with Bryant Gumble", McNabb spoke his mind.
How he is treated in Philadelphia?, and his image. That's the reason for this."Every year I'm part of some criticism," McNabb said with a laugh. "But every day that we go through life, you're faced with a lot of adversity. Now the answer is how do you handle the adversity. How do you respond?
How do you respond?, play like a champion. Show everyone your hear to stay. Donovan McNabb image should be great, he isn't a "bad guy." "I try to handle myself with class. I try to handle myself with dignity. I think sometimes people look to players to act out, speak loudly, pretty much be an idiot. But that's not me." said McNabb. It's true, those athletes have image problems. Donovan McNabb shouldn't have those problems.
Many believe this is McNabb's last season in Philadelphia, and there are clues. The Eagles drafting a quarterback, and McNabb's 9-12 record after losing the Superbowl. He feels the heat, and everyone else does as well. Injuries are the problem, because performance isn't.
McNabb is wrong, because it's about performance. Chicago Bears quarterback Rex Grossman is criticized more. There are plenty of Caucasian quarterbacks that are criticized more then blacks.
Grossman, Eli Manning, and Joey Harrington. These quarterbacks are more criticized then black quarterbacks. None of them have talent like McNabb, and they struggle with leadership.
Black quarterbacks are expected to play different. Everyone thinks black quarterbacks run better, and have more athleticism. But it doesn't win championships.
Caucasian quarterbacks are better, because they win championships. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and more. They're the best, because of their style.
It's rare seeing a black quarterback in the pocket. Their are some, but very little. Must of them, like to run. It brings entertainment, but not championships. Black quarterbacks aren't bad, they just struggle winning championships.
Warren Moon is in the Hall of Fame; their isn't any other black quarterback their. Their only six starting black quarterbacks in the NFL. What does that tell you?
But McNabb doesn't regret anything. "It's just reality," McNabb said. "It's something that I've been a part of and other quarterbacks before and after me have been a part of. Did I expect any backlash? Yeah. Everything I say, I expect backlash from it."
"People are trying to dig too deep in this whole situation," he said. "I wasn't pinpointing particular people. What I said was the fact that we (black QB's) have to do a little extra. No matter the style of play you're displaying, there's always going to be criticism."
If race is brought up, it's going to be news. Media attention, that's what's going to happen. Race is serious, commenting about it is going to bring attention. McNabb should know this. He should knew race isn't a factor with quarterbacks anymore.
"I never said Peyton doesn't get criticized. I never said Carson doesn't get criticized. I never said Tom doesn't get criticized, because they do," McNabb said. "They talked about Peyton not winning the big game. They talked about Tom Brady and his baby and girlfriend. We get criticized a little differently." How? I don't see it.
It's not color, it's winning. If a player can't get it done, he is going to be criticized. Grossman, Eli Manning, they were criticize with their struggles. It wasn't different, because their white. These players are criticize more then McNabb.
"Black or white quarterbacks, we all go through something because that's the life of a quarterback," Vince Young said Wednesday after Titans practice. "You've got to be able to handle all the pressure. You've got to be able to handle the losses. You've got to be able to handle the media. If you can't handle it, you've got to get off that position and go play something else." I can't agree even more. There isn't any need for race.
McNabb has brought media attention, and it isn't good. The Eagles don't need this, because they are slumping right now. This attention, continues the bleeding.
What has happen is African-Americans has hurt the league. Adam "Pacman" Jones, Tank Johnson, Michael Vick, and lots more. That's the problem with black NFL players. Those athlete are "killing" the African-American race. We put pressure on ourselves.
