Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard hit his 52nd home run of his career yesterday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Like numbers 50 and 51, this was a solo blast. The homer occurred in the third inning, which tied the game at 3-3. Toronto's pitcher at the time was A.J. Burnett.
Howard leads the majors in 2006 with 28 home runs. Seventeen of these blasts have either tied or given the Phillies the lead. Mr. Howard is simply Mr. Clutch.
After the game, Howard was named a reserve to the All-Star game. This will be Howard's first (of many) All-Star game appearances. Howard will also take part n the Home Run Derby contest, which was won last year by his teammate Bobby Abreu.
