The Ryan Howard File: No. 50 and 51

by user Christof

This is the first in a series of articles following home runs hit by Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, who may one day be remembered as the greatest home run hitter of the post steriod era of baseball.

Howard hit his 50th and 51st home runs of his career (No. 26 and 27 for the 2006 MLB season) last night against Baltimore. The first home run of the night came in the fourth inning. This was a solo shot off of starter Kris Benson.

Howard's second blast of the evening, which was another solo shot, came in the eighth inning. This time, the pitcher was Sendy Rleal. Unfortunately, Howard two blasts did not help the Phils, for the final score was 12-5, Baltimore.

Ryan Howard now leads the Majors in home runs, and is third overall in RBI's. All of this is done by Howard while playing on a team that has packed it in for the season already. Perish the thought of what this guy could do on a good team.

Way too early for this sort of thing. He is a very promising player but come on. "Greatest home run hitter"? Relax.

Boy has hit 51 home runs for his career, and he has yet to play a full season of baseball at the MLB level. I rather jump onto the bandwagon early, I will get a better seat then. :)

Yeah, 51 homers in 631 at bats is a pretty damn good ratio, and I'd only expect it to improve as his career moves on.

Howard has been flat out dominant. Hitting-wise this guy may actualy rival pujols. If ever there was an NL answer to david ortiz, he is it...

The only problem is this year - Howard has become Ronnie the Butcher in the field. This is a quite depressing development. Howard has soft hands, and he was very good in the field last year. The only thing that can explain this is the lack of fielding practice - The Phils conducted fielding practice about 2 weeks ago. Prior to that, they last had fielding practie...in Spring Training.

What the heck, did someone just take points away because I compared howard to pujols and ortiz hitting-wise? Pujols is the best 1b in the league, no argument, but I'd say howard could potentially be better than big papi. Give him time and he could be a decent fielder ( he was last year) and good for 40+ HRs per year with a decent avg

Has he played a full season yet, i.e. 162 games?

Career wise, he has played in 182 game (as of the end of June 28). So Howard has hit 51 home runs in a season and the month of April, if you want to break down that way.

He and probably Utley are the only reasons to watch the Phillies this year. Howard is absolutely dominant.

I'd Say Pat Burrell is my reason for watching the phils... His called strike three pose is magnificent

I can't rag on Pat too much. To his credit, he is having a nice year and his OBP has gone way up...

Pats OBP has declined since last year and so have the rest of his numbers, granted not more than 10%. The issue is that he's more very unclutch this year and just seems like he's going through the motions.

Howard looks really good so far. I can't wait to see him in a Yankees uniform in a few years. :)
