The Ryan Howard File: 2006 Home Run Derby King

14

by user Christof

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard won the 2006 All-Star Home Run Derby. Mr. Howard defeated New York Mets wonderboy David Wright in the final round of the competition. Other participants included Miguel Cabrera, David Ortiz, Jermaine Dye, Miguel Tejada, Lance Berkman, and Troy Glaus.

Ryan Howard, as it has been previously mentioned in these reports, will quickly becoming the greatest home run hitter of his generation. Being only 26, Mr. Howard may be just what baseball needs in this post Steroid Era.

Unfortunately, Ryan Howard plays for the Phillies, an organization that some would say is run by Mickey Mouse. However, I think, by saying this, a person is actually insulting Mickey Mouse. Case in point, former Phillies President and current part-owner of the club, Bill Giles did an interview with the Philly Inky yesterday. In it he states that Brett Myers is innocent of the domestic assault charges. He goes on and says that "Brett Myers was trying to help his wife." So guess what the lead story in the paper this morning: Ryan Howard winning the home run derby or Bill Giles gem of an interview?

I wouldn't say that too quickly. Howard is only hitting .200 over his last 10 games, (40 AB) with only 1 HR. He's 2-16 with 9 K, 0 BB in his last 4 games, not exactly peaking. Here's hoping he doesn't have a second half like the last Philly home run derby champ.

He has been in a slump this month. It is a long season, with peaks and valleys. He will be fine. Howard will still hit over 50 HR's this season.

Yeah you're right, him slumping the last 10 games is totally indicative of his career so far...

Ortiz is a better home run hitter.

Ortiz is also older. Let's see who will end up having a better career.

I don't know if I'd issue the "better career" challenge. Ortiz led his team to a World Series title. He was a star, he wasn't just along for the ride. It's conceivable that Howard will have better personal numbers, but we're talking about a game where winning is what really matters. So, are you ready to contend that Howard will either lead the Phillies to a World Series title or that he will end up on a team that can actually win a World Series?

As opposed to the other games where winning doesn't matter. I think its incredibly conceivable that howard could lead a team the the WS...Right now, if you ask most people who they want bottom of the 9th 2 outs 1 on, down by one...they say ortiz...4 years from now, I think you may be saying howard...

Steroids or not, I miss the old days when McGuire and Sosa would hit 500+ foot shots to parts of the ballpark that seemed unreachable. It made for one hell of a hr derby.

Adam Dunn has about 150 more career home runs than Ryan Howard, and shows no signs of slowing down. He's only 10 days older than Howard. If Dunn stays in Cincinnati, there's no reasons his numbers can't stay way up.

Also...dunn is batting .237 with a .369 OBP and a .916OPS while howard is .278 avg, .341 OBP and .923 OPS...the difference is howard is more than a homerun hitter...perhaps this is why he's more than dunn and going to be a little papi...plus..why compare him to papi, he;s a much better fielder than he's playing right now...

Howard's final home run was crazy -- off the "Hit It Here" sign 430 ft. away. Howard also has the longest HR of the season so far, a 491-foot blast off Sergio Mitre at Citizens' Bank on April 23.

Here's an interesting comparison: Adam Dunn Career Strikeouts - 32% of ABs, Ryan Howard Career Strikouts - 210 31% of ABs

Good job ripping your favorite team AGAIN, Christof +'s for you! If you hate the Phillies so much, why don't you just root for some other team? Does your geographical location force you to be a Phillies fan?

I want to see the Phillies win. Unlike Bill Giles and the current ownership, I actually believe that and just doesn't say it to sell tickets. Nonetheless, this Phillies ownership is going nowhere. They are followers who are in leadership roles. So yes, I do complain, because I actually like the Phils.
