The Rocky Bandwagon

Colin Cowherd, among other national sports radio yackers, says Denver fans of the Rockies are merely bandwagon hoppers and are not serious baseball fans.

Cowherd reasons that since Coors Field was not sold out in July, Rockies' fans are not any good.

What a complete non sequitur.

In July, the Rockies were below .500. Why should their games be sold out? They should not be.

The only reason to go to a Rockies game in July was to enjoy the Rocky Mountain air and enjoy a cold beer.

If a below average major league team team sells out games, why is that a good commentary on the fans?

They are paying to see a loser.

Bad television shows get canceled. Bad stage shows close. Bad bands don't sell music.

Are you not a true television fan if you choose not to watch " The Surreal Life " on VH1? Are you not a true Broadway fan if you choose not to attend " Taboo?" Are you not a true music fan if you don't buy William Hung 's album?

No.

But somehow bad baseball teams are supposed to sell out?

That is ridiculous.

The Rockies started playing great. They started winning. Fans started buying tickets. Coors Field sold out.

You want to criticize fans, criticize them when they do not sell out playoff games. Pittsburgh did not sell out when the Pirates had Barry Bonds and played the Braves in the playoffs. The Arizona Diamondbacks did not sell out their playoff games against the Rockies this year.

Criticize that.

Well, I agree that they started selling when they started winning. I like Cowherd and actually agree with him more often then not. And I am a Mariners fan, so I know all about the crappy team not selling out...but I disagree with the comment:

"The Arizona Diamondbacks did not sell out their playoff games against the Rockies this year."

This happened due to Arizona being a retirement and relocation area. There aren't many actual Diamondback fans. Most are fans of other teams as we saw with the Cubs series.

Arizona is a place of too many better things to do than sit in a soulless ballpark.

Your assumption that it's all relocation and retirees is a tad off base. Most people have lived here longer than the D-Backs have been here - THAT is the problem. I know a bunch of people that are still Giants fans because they remember the days of the Phoenix Firebirds (Giants AAA team)

Then there's Spring Training sites all over the valley. It's easy to like the teams in Surprise, Tucson and Peoria instead of going downtown to see an insecure franchise...

For instance - They named the park "Chase Field" instead of "Chase Stadium" because it sounded too much like "Shea Stadium"

On a personal note: the press box is cramped and the media dining room food is subpar.

Oh man, the Phoenix Firebirds! I remember going to a game or two of theirs with my dad (who lives in Glendale). My future brother-in-law once jumped onto the field to get a foul ball for me (I was like, 8 or 9 at the time) -- he almost got kicked out of the park. What a great time! Gotta love minor-league baseball.

LOL...he's right...just listen to the crowd when Manny hits a 450 foot blast. You will hear the Red Sox fans. The same things are said about the Pirates and D'Backs fans, because they have the same mentality...they don't care until their teams win. Colorado is only a football city. The Nuggets have their window now (to sell tickets), and nobody cared about the Rockies until they started winning. There is a formula for who can be a Rockies fan without losing respect, and you can see it in my last article...I hope the Rocks win, but not if their fans whine and cry like they've been here before.

Colorado is only a football city. Well, you're right, insofar as that Colorado isn't a city at all. It's a state.

Denver isn't just a football city. Hate to break it to people, but the Colorado Avalanche are still a very popular sports team there. It helped they won all those division titles and a couple of Stanley Cup titles since they arrived in 1995.

Bandwagon jumping does not really bother me until I go to get a ticket and I can't because of all a sudden they are all sold out to people who have been watching the game for about a month.

Well, if you were a season ticket holder you wouldn't have this problem. I'm just sayin'. Make the commitment. Or whine.

Lesson Learned: Colin Cowherd is a total idiot. He discounts EVERY thing he doesn't like or understand (like blogs, message baords and our very own 'chair). His generalizations reek of personal inadequacies. Take the college football from him and he is an empty plastic bag floating in the breeze above a landfill.

Are you sure about the Pirates. I was at those games, I was even in Atlanta during the last game of the series. I think those games did sell out (I could be wrong I was 12) and I am certain that games 1 & 2 of the World Series were sold out.

People think there are suddenly suddenly bandwagon Rockies fans? Not unfair to assume. Yet it is interesting enough how the flatbed couldn't be big enough to accommodate the high number of bandwagon Red Sox fans not from just this year, but the last 4 to 5 years.
