Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!
It's theme week here at the Mule. Recapping last week's beatings:
Worth mentioning, but not quite Dishonorable Mentions:
- Syracuse 38 - Louisville 35 - Ouch. Is Louisville taking defensive pointers from the Bengals?
- New England 38 - Buffalo 7 - New England will beat a lot of Mules before the season is over.
- Michigan State 34 - Notre Dame 14 - How embarrassing for the Spartans to let the Leprechauns find the pot of gold twice.
Dishonorable Mentions
- Detroit Lions - The Philadelphia Eagles offense got well in a hurry against the Detroit Lions, smoking them 56-21 in their spiffy throwback uniforms that should have been thrown back. Kevin Curtis had 221 yards of receiving and 3 touchdowns on 11 catches and McNabb threw for 381 yards. Brian Westbrook rushed for 110 yards and caught passes for 111.
- Penn State Nittany Lions - The Lions of Happy Valley, ranked 10th in the nation had lost their last 8 to Michigan coming in to this game. Saturday, the streak was extended to 9, as the vaunted Nittany Lion defense, which was supposed to make it a Big Ten contender, gave up two scores to a Michigan team run by a freshman quarterback and couldn't crack the end zone against a defensive team shredded by Appalachian State and Oregon. Final score 14-9. It wasn't a lopsided beatdown, but here at The Mule, we respect and celebrate one team's total continued ownership of another.
- Detroit Tigers - Last Monday, the Tigers went into Jacobs Field 4.5 games behind the American League Central Division -leading Cleveland Indians needing a sweep to get back into the race. They set up their rotation beforehand to throw their best pitchers at the Tribe. They left Jacobs Field Wednesday 7.5 games out, and all-but eliminated from both the Division and wild card races after a 3-game sweep. The Tigers squandered leads in all three games.
This Week's Rented Mule
The Chicago Bears were supposed to have the best defense in the National Football League. Sunday night, in a nationally-televised, prime time game, the Dallas Cowboys shredded them like so much cabbage, as if they were going to make cole slaw out of them later and toss them onto a reuben sandwich. The final score was 34-10 as the Cowboys wore down the Bears, scoring 31 points in the second half. The Cowboys rolled up 431 total yards on the Bears, while the Bears offense continued to look inept, with Wrecks Grossman tossing 3 picks en route to receiving this week's not-so-coveted Rented Mule Award.
