The Real Teixeira is Back

Well, it's about damn time, Mark Teixeira owners must be saying.

After driving in a ridiculous 144 runs last year, Teixeira looked like a shell of himself this season, producing a mere 49 runs batted in over 350 at-bats prior to the All-Star break.

Then, the real Teixeira emerged. The Ranger first baseman has been on fire since the break, driving in 23 runs in just 107 at-bats. He's already matched his first-half home run output with nine and he's walked 30 times to move into sixth place in the AL in that department.

Teixeira has traditionally been a better second-half player, but never to this extreme. After batting .275/.353/.445 in the first half, he's .327/.471/.626 in the second half (his 1.097 OPS since the break tops the American League). It's not as if Teixeira's slowing down either, as evidenced by a .364 batting average in the past week.

This kind of run is not unprecedented by Teixeira, but it seems more shocking and sudden now when compared to his substandard first-half performance. Last year, he hit .315 with 18 homers and 71 RBI after the break. In fact, over the past three years, no one in baseball has more second-half RBI than Teixeira.

If you're a Teixeira owner, sit back and enjoy the ride. You know at the very least he'll be in the lineup every day as he has for 403 straight games now -- the second-longest streak in Ranger history and second-longest active streak in baseball.

Yeah, over at Baseball Time in Arlington, we've been waiting for the real Teixeira all season. Any time he hits a homerun or has a multi-hit game, it was a sign that he was coming out of his slump. Well, it's finally come, and it couldn't have come at a better time. With the A's, Mariners and Angels all suddenly getting hot, the Rangers can't afford not to have all their players playing at the top of their game.

Tex is a monster. His numbers might not match last year, but he's a great buy low candidate for next year.

He was drafted about 4th or 5th in many leagues. I'm glad I wasn't tempted and took David Ortiz with the sixth pick.

I still think he has top 10 talent. I wouldn't be surprised if he went back to 140rbi form.

Teixeira played way over his head last year! The "real" guy is more like the one who put up 2004's numbers. Or this year's.

While it's unlikely that he'll match the record he set for RBI for a switch hitter last year, Teixeira wasn't really playing over his head. He's an excellent hitter that has shown the ability to hit for average as well as power. Why the power hasn't been there this year, I don't know. But if you just watch him play, I think it becomes pretty obvious that last year was more representative of his talent than this year is.

Well, the RBI is more of a team stat really. I just want to see what kind of OPS he racks up here in the second half before I judge his 2007 value. So far, I really like what I see and agree that he looks like he could be worth a top 10 pick.
