Hey everyone, welcome to the Inaugural Edition of The Rant. Here we will discuss the things that bugged me this past week, among other news in the sports world and real world that is flat out annoying! All information was used from ESPN.Com and CBSSPORTSLINE.Com. Without further ado, lets look at this week in review:
- Zinedine Zidane was banned by FIFA for three games, Materazzi two. WHAT?! I can agree with the punishment for Zidane, but Materazzi's punishment is by no means warranted. How can FIFA suspend a man with inconclusive evidence that said man dissed another man's momma? Honestly, how many stories have been swirling around about what Materazzi said? Five or six stories at the least. Let's just assume that Materazzi did in fact say something about Momma Zidane...what would a fitting punishment be? Sensitivity training, like Ozzie Guillen? If Materazzi is being punished for accomplishing the task of getting inside a star player's head, then, going by such rules, Stephon Marbury, Ray Lewis, among countless others, should be punished as well.
- On America's Got Talent with Regis Philbin, many of you have noticed that he refers to himself in third person. Well, this one boy band informed "Reege" that they made up a ditty for him, to which Philbin replied, "Oh, alright, Regis loves a little ditty..." Are you kidding me? Then, to top the night off, Regis wittingly remarks to a hopeful contestant that, "Everyone loves a good tickle." Wow. Yet I keep watching the show week after week...
- The Atlanta Braves traded a disposable Class A catching prospect for former Cleveland Indians closer Bob Wickman. Wickman is the short-term answer to the Brave's long-term closer problem (which, by the way, could have been solved had the Braves not moved John Smoltz back to the rotation). The Braves did not lose much in the trade, so if the deal doesn't work out, then not much harm was done. I say Wickman will play one more year before retiring, unless he does well with the Braves, in which case he'd stay 2-3 more years.
- Shea Hillenbrand, who has 39 RBI and a .301 BA on the season, threw a hissy fit because the 'Jays wouldn't acknowledge that Hillendbrand adopted a child. Big deal. It is not a classless act; a rude act, maybe, but not a classless act, as Hillenbrand stated. Say goodbye to the man who has been on 3 teams in 6 years.
- The Seattle SuperSonics are headed to Oklahoma City, Thus proving that there is no loyalty in sports. Which team is the next to be moved? The Florida Marlins? Who knows?!
- Geragos, Gregg Anderson's lawyer, said the personal trainer already has been ordered to testify next Thursday before the new grand jury. But he again will refuse. Such loyalty is admirable, but at the same time foolish. Does anyone actually think that Barry Bonds would display the same loyalty for Anderson? More than likely not. So Bonds isn't going to be indicted today , big deal. If the steroids won't land him in jail, maybe tax evasion and perjury will?
- There is a huge boost in Seinfeld references among ACGM users this week, a 362% increase from last quarter. Keep 'em coming; who doesn't love a good Seinfeld reference?
- Robert Yates Racing will let Elliott Sadler out of his contract at the end of the season. It's another blow for the Yates team, which also will lose longtime driver Dale Jarrett and sponsor UPS to Michael Waltrip's new team at the end of the season. Sadler is currently 20th in the Nextel Cup standings. Not a big loss for the Yates team (trust me, I play fantasy nascar!!)
- Another Myspace Uh-oh. I wrote an article about this already, but it is so ridiculous it bears repeating. For those who didn't read the story yet, you have to read this.
- Galen Fiss, captain of the Browns' last championship team and former teammate in other sports of Dean Smith and Roger Maris, has died. He was 75. Fiss was a linebacker on the Cleveland team that upset the Baltimore Colts 27-0 to win the 1964 title. For everyone on ACGM, rest in peace Mr. Fiss.
Parting is such sweet sorrow. I hope you've enjoyed my first column EVER, and hope you will continue to look forward to it each week as much as I look forward to writing it. Take care everyone, and have a great weekend!
