The Randy Moss Deal -- Year 2

by user Joebook

In early 2005, the Minnesota Vikings traded star receiver Randy Moss to the Raiders for linebacker Napoleon Harris and the 7th overall pick in the 2005 draft. The Vikings selected Troy Williamson, a wide receiver from South Carolina, widely regarded as the fastest player in the draft.

The Raiders believed they were upgrading their offense and gaining a lethal run/pass combination by signing free agent running back Lamont Jordan from the New York Jets.

The Vikings believed they were washing their hands of a major problem with an egotistical, uncoachable player and gaining a high pick and an average linebacker.

Since the deal, Moss has been a major disappointment, catching only 60 balls and scoring 8 touchdowns... not the impact the Raiders thought he'd make on the offense. He's struggled this season as the Raiders have lost their starting QB Aaron Brooks to a shoulder injury. Moss currently has 6 catches for 79 yards in two games this year.

Williamson looks to be a star receiver in the making, building a rapport with Vikings QB Brad Johnson slowly, but surely. He didn't have a huge rookie year, finishing with 24 catches, but he averaged 15.5 yards per catch and has improved in the offseason. Through two games, he's clearly the #1 WR in Minnesota and is on pace for a season of 80 catches and 1400 yards.

The Vikings are 2-0, thanks in large part to new leading receiver Williamson and new middle linebacker Harris, who led the team in tackles and had one monster sack in Sunday's 16-13 victory over Carolina. Harris played mostly the middle in Oakland and is most effective as a blitzer, so his role in Minnesota fits. He tried to blend in as a strong side linebacker last season, and wasn't effective. As a starter, he'll play a large part in the revival of the Vikings defense this season.

Nobody thought it would happen, but it looks like the Vikings made an excellent move by dumping Moss and picking up a stud WR in the draft and a good linebacker that is turning into a playmaker.

Manny -- I don't know a lot of people who think they got fair value for Moss. The 7th overall pick could have turned out to be a bust, and Harris was a backup linebacker. I think the Vikes are lucky it happened like it did.

I can't remember the last time anyone gave up a top 10 pick for a player. Sometimes draft picks get traded for one another(ala the Manning trade), but the 7th overall pick is a TON to give up for any player.

You can't blame Moss for his apparent lack of production. The Raiders offensive line is horrid, and makes it impossible for any QB to get the ball to anyone not named "turf."

Yes, I agree with this. The Raiders offense is just awful. Having watched Moss for years as a Vikings fan myself, I still believe Randy is extremely talented and capable of big numbers, he just has absolutely no one to get him the ball.

Moss had over 1,000 yards and 8 TDs for the Raiders last year with no QB. This year will probably be the same. And I almost did a spit take when you said Troy Williamson "is on pace for a season of 80 catches and 1400 yards" lol... Whoa there we're 2 games in... You know the Vikings are "on pace" for an undefeated season! Plus, a middle linebacker leading a team in sacks is not that impressive of a stat. He should be leading hte team in tackles or close to it every game. Just by standing there most of the game he should collect several tackles. I'm not saying that this trade won't end up working well for the Vikes, but it is really early and you are overstating the impact of the fuits of the trade just a bit...

I actually believe Williamson could get to 80 catches, which would mean about 1300-1400 yards. He won't score more than 8 TD, but he's clearly the #1 option in that offense and they play weak pass defenses all year. He'll put up better numbers than Moss this year.

I agree that 80 catches is very possible in this offense... who else is Brad Johnson going to throw the ball to? Travis Taylor? Williamson is the one WR for Minnesota that can consistently get open, and when you combine that with his speed and the fact that Johnson can the ball where it needs to be on time, I think Williamson can definitely get 80 catches.
