The Pronk Shift
The Pronk Shift is a baseball defensive maneuver created by Tampa Bay Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon, as a way to deal with Travis Hafner (nicknamed "Pronk.")
On April 21, 2007, with Hafner in the midst of a torrid power tear, Maddon shifted his defense as follows (photo by Manny Stiles):
- Third baseman Akinori Iwamura moved behind second.
- Shortstop Ben Zobrist went to deep left field.
- The outfield shifted deep and to the right.
- Second baseman B.J. Upton moved to shallow right field.
In Hafner's first at bat against the shift, the defensive maneuver paid off, as Hafner hit a line drive to deep left-center -- right at the newly-positioned Carl Crawford.
A form of it was first used in 1946 against Ted Williams.
