Barry Bonds' record-breaking 756th home run ball was auctioned Saturday for $752,467. Damn. That is a lot of money. You could buy an entire home for that…which made me wonder…what else could you buy for that amount of money? And would I rather have any of the other ones?
$752,467 could buy you:
[1] 84,074,525.14 Sheets of loose leaf paper
752,467 Rolls of Charmin Toilet Paper
37,717.64 Seasons of MLB.TV
25,124.11 Pairs of Batting gloves [2]
18,835.22 Autographed copies of Jose Conseco’s book: “Juiced”
12,136.56 Louisville Sluggers
10,450.93 Bottles of HGH (40ct)
16.10 A-Rod at bats (Average of 593 AB over last 12 years)
2.25 Rolls Royce Phantoms
Not saying these are worth more then the ball. I would love a Rolls Royce or even just the money for the A-Rod at bats, but I don’t know if I would have spent that much on a ball. Think about the kid who caught it, though. [3]
A Mets Fan from New York was on a lay-over on his way to Australia. He decided to buy a ticket with his friend, and he caught history. Then sold it for three quarters of a million dollars. Talk about Fast Money.
And now the man who bought the ball wants to let the public choose what happens to it. He said he purchased it so that there could be a “democratization” of the argument. Mark Ecko (Designer of the Ecko brand of clothing) has decided that he will let people vote on whether they should:
a) Bestow it (Send to Cooperstown) b) Brand it (Mark it with an Asterisk before sending to Cooperstown) c) Banish it (Launch it into space)
Would you want to “Banish” your 2.25 Rolls Royce Phantoms? I sure as hell wouldn’t. I don’t think Bonds is a good guy. I don’t think he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, but that ball can NOT end up in space. Why? Because the ball is part of history.
I voted to send it to Cooperstown.
