The Lakers have not had an all-star point guard since the days of the great Magic Johnson, but they haven't even had decent point guard since the championship years with mister 0.4, Derek Fisher. It has been smuck after smuck and a Smush, no one consistent or dependable at that spot. They need a solid point guard, a floor general like a Jason Kidd, Kirk Hinrich, Chris Paul or Chauncey Billups, but that probably won't happen anytime in the foreseeable future, especially with genius Jerry Buss and lap dog Mitch Kupchak making moves. There are some decent possibilities though, remember, I said "decent".
Out of the "decent" possibles there is little Earl Boykins, from the Milwaukee Bucks, good player and defender, can put up 25 points on any given night and dish out some assists as well, I would say that would be a good pick up. He was probably the best out of the likely candidates available, but here are the rest: Mo Williams, Milwaukee Bucks: Another player from the Bucks, young and talented, but good for LA? Maybe. Jason Hart, Los Angeles Clippers: Did well filling in for Shawn Livingston after he went down with the worst injury all time! Ouch! I still feel sick just replaying that injury in my head, poor bastard, nobody should have to go through an injury like that. Chucky"only shoots threes" Atkins, Memphis Grizzlies: No way! If the Lakers get this guy again, I will boycott the Lakers. Atkins was garbage the first time around, I don't know why you would get him again. Gary Payton, Miami Heat : I love the Glove, but his time has past, he just can't play at the level he used to. It's a shame, he was a great defender and a sweet passer. Too bad, it would have been cool to him as a Laker in his prime. Now those are the guys that the Lakers will probably choose to replace Smush Parker, but here are the guys that they should go after: Chauncey Billups, Detroit Pistons: Proven himself to be one of the best point guards in the league, with his clutch play and leadership. He can score, pass, defend and he has years of playoff experience, not to mention a ring at the Lakers expense. Ideal for the Lakers, but I don't think they can afford him, as he will probably be the biggest free agent next season. Mike Bibby, Sacramento Kings: You got to feel for this guy, one of the elite players in this league, Bibby is consistent every year with his numbers and play, but ever since Chris Webber and Peja Stojakovic left, he hasn't had the teammates around him to get his team competitive again. He would be a good fit in Los Angeles as long Kobe Bryant sticks around to complement his skills. Jason Kidd, New Jersey Nets: One player away from making Kidd a Laker last season, it is quite possible to see him in LA if the Lakers can bear to let Andrew Bynum go. You can't get much better than Kidd at the point, triple-double average in the playoffs, in the top three in assists every year, dominant rebounder, can score when need be. In the top five of best point guards of all time, got to be. Kidd to Kobe, sounds good to me!
