The Perfect Lineup

by user Jgov05

All the talk recently has been about the All Star game and the players for each league, but who are the best players overall in baseball? Here's baseball's ultimate lineup.

Batting Order

1. Jose Reyes, SS, New York Mets: Reyes' OBP is always a bit underwhelming, but his pure speed makes him the best leadoff hitter in the game. Reyes has swiped 37 bases this year, 10 more than any other #1 hitter. His .301 batting average and .355 OBP are huge improvements over his career marks, and his 8 home runs give him ample power.

2. Alfonso Soriano, LF, Washington Nationals: Soriano usually bats leadoff, but if you put him behind Reyes in this fantasy lineup he would produce more runs. Soriano's average has fallen to .269 after a June slump, but he still ranks among the top in baseball in homeruns (26) and steals (20). Only his play in left field would hurt this ballclub.

3. Albert Pujols, 1B, St. Louis Cardinals: Pujols is the easiest choice on this team, no other player produces near his numbers. His slugging (.719) and OPS (1.159) percentages are off the charts and rank first in the majors. And of course his power numbers (28/73) are equally mind-boggling.

4. Carlos Lee, RF, Milwaukee Brewers: Lee is one of the most underrated players in baseball, and this year he has dominated opposing pitchers. He has 25 homers, 69 RBIs, and is batting a respectable .286 for the Brewers. Lee also has decent speed with 12 steals on the year. He is a monster offensively and would drive in the first three guys in this order very often.

5. Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue Jays:Wells is one of the more consistent and balance producers in the majors. On the year he has 20 homers and 62 RBIs all while hitting .314. A poor man's Albert Pujols, Wells ranks in the top 10 in each of those categories. He also has speed (10 steals) and plays an excellent center field.

6. David Wright, 3B, New York Mets:Wright is a huge reason towards the Mets success this season. One of the better young players in the game, he has produced across the board this season (.320-18-68). Wright is very consistent and plays well defensively. A true 5-tool player.

7. Chase Utley, 2B, Philadelphia Phillies:Utley is by far the best offensive second baseman in the majors. He leads all players at the postion with 16 homers, and is second to Jose Lopez with 49 RBIs. He is a proven player that will be an All Star game staple for many years to come.

8. Victor Martinez, C, Cleveland Indians:Martinez is one of the most underrated players in the majors. He ranks at the top 5 in each major cateogry at the position with .307-11-56. Martinez has been a consistent force throughout his career with a .296 average as well as 21-101 per 162 games played. He is decent defensively as well with a .993 career fielding percentage.

9. Johan Santana, P, Minnesota Twins:There's no DH on the Ultimate Lineup, so Santana will be our pitcher. He has been the AL's best pitcher for 3 years running now, as he is on pace for his 3rd consecutive strikeout title. In his last 3 seasons he has also posted an impressive 45-17 record. This year he leads the league in both ERA (2.76) and WHIP (.99). Truly the game's most proven pitcher.

Perhaps if this was an AL team, you'd switch Soriano to DH, and bring in a specialist Left Fielder. Five years ago - Barry Bonds. But now...?

Soriano doesnt' get on base often enough to be in the 2 hole, and I'd say the same for Reyes as leadoff. Plus, you have to have A-Rod on this team, and it's questionable to put in Soriano when you could find a better LF. I'd take out Reyes (snif) for A-Rod (yes, he's a SS in my book) and put Miggy Cabrera in LF maybe?

I would Take out Lee and put in Vlad or Manny, then take out Martinez and put in Mauer.

I also don't know if I'd want Wright over A-Rod at this point in their careers.

I think it depends on what you want from the lineup. If you are looking to win in the post-season. I don't think I would include Arod. If I wanted to win in the post-season, I would include Jeter over Reyes too.

Yes, but we haven't seen Wright win anything in the postseason either. I think at this point A-Rod puts up much better numbers and can help a team win ball games more than Wright. In 3 years, it probably won't be that way, but it is right now.

Wright has actually put up better numbers than A-Rod this year.

Mauer vs VMart is a tough call -- if Mauer continues his redonkulous season, itll be hard to argue against him

I assumed that he won't be hitting so close to .400 for much longer. Plus I think that Martinez does not get nearly enough attention for what he does.

I wouldn't put two Mets on this roster, though they have been dominant in the NL they only played average against the AL. Reyes should be replaced with Michael Young, the best hitting-fielding combo at SS in the league. I might also swap Soriano for Manny and possibly put Soriano at 2B. I would also put Jermaine Dye in for Carlos Lee. If a DH was available I'd put in David Ortiz.

Soriano can't play second base...I know he's got a better bat than utley, but the guy played the position for a few years and wasn't just bad but plain terrible. If you're going just lineup, i get soriano, but if these guys have to play the field soriano should be in left as he's probably close to the top offensively for outfielders as well...

Ummm, you may have accidentally forgotten Derek Jeter... this team will go 0-162 without him, EVERYBODY knows that!!!

Was this lineup made using baseball card prices as the criteria??? Where's Alex Gordon???...at least I crack myself up - this line-up will look different in a few months...(other than calling 8 home runs "Ample") nice work jgov!

I put the players where they have started the most this season. I would change Sori to 2B and put in Manny in left if I had done it differently. Also I think that Reyes is just getting better and is the ultimate leadoff hitter at this point in his career.

Anyone saying that I should take out Lee should realize that he has 69 RBIs in the Brewers lineup. That in itself is a near impossible feat.

Pretty funny. A "perfect" lineup made up almost exclusively of National Leaguers. Try again...

Well, many of the best AL hitters are DHs and my lineup didn't include them. That means that Hafner, Ortiz, Thome, and Giambi weren't eligible.

Manny Ramirez? Ichiro? Vlad Guerreo? A-Rod? Miguel Tejada?
These alone are better than some of your choices.

Manny would have been my next choice in the outfield, I'd take Wright over A-Rod at this point. Guererro seems to be on the decline. With Tejada, I agree he is a better hitter than Reyes but I needed Reyes to be a leadoff hitter.

Ichiro is arguably the best contact hitter in baseball and carries a higher OBP than Reyes. Perhaps you replace Reyes with Tejada (batting 5th) and Wells with Ichiro (batting leadoff). I would also consider flip-flopping Utley and Soriano in the order - based mainly on OBP.

Lee is a left fielder in real life. Do you really want to place Soriano in left instead of him? Because I wouldn't.
