The Patriots Legacy Hasn't Been Tarnished

by Drpatriot

In the face of a scandal so big that people have forgotten to talk about Michael Vick, the Patriots and Belichick have now been penalized a grand total of $750,000 and either two first-day picks or a first-round pick. People have begun to speak out on the arrogance of the Patriots organization. They say the now popular idea that perhaps the Patriots are not the epitome of success that everyone thought. Some even dare say that Belichick is less than a spectacular coach and orchestrator of three Super Bowl winning teams.

I say it's a load of crap. And here's why.

After the year 2001, the first Super Bowl victory of the New England Patriots, Drew Bledsoe was traded to the Buffalo Bills for a second-round pick. Bledsoe was unsatisfied and upset with his role on the first of the great Super Bowl teams and now was playing with a division rival. There are three possible reasons that Bledsoe did not reveal to his coach, to the media, to everyone the fact that Belichick was recording tapes of the other team's offensive signals in order to gain an advantage over other teams in the NFL.

First, he didn't know it was going on. This seems unlikely. Bledsoe was the highest paid player on the Patriots team at the time and a captain of the offense. The idea that he didn't know that tapes were being recorded of opposing teams' offensive signals is ludicrous.

Second, it WASN'T going on at all.

Third, the Bills were doing it too and he wasn't going to rat his own team out.

After the year 2004, the third Super Bowl victory of the New England Patriots, Ty Law left the team after many disagreements with management over an extension and signed instead with the New York Jets, a division rival. After playing on two Super Bowl teams, the information that Belichick was recording tapes of the other team's offensive signals in order to gain an advantage over other teams in the NFL still did not reach the mainstream.

The idea that Ty Law didn't know what was going on is absolutely ludicrous. He was a member of the defense and would have used this footage just as much as Richard Seymour, Willie McGinest, or Tedy Bruschi.

Therefore, either this idea STILL wasn't going on or the Jets were also participating in filming the other team's signals.

Two seasons later, the demonic Eric Mangini was at the helm at head coach for the New York Jets. With a team in the rebuilding stages and the chance at the playoffs relatively low, Mangini had the perfect excuse to use this information against Belichick. He was a new, young coach with a chip on his shoulder and a desire to overcome the shadow of his mentor. So he didn't do any filming himself and prepared for some major second-half comebacks. That year the Jets came close once and succeeded once. But this may not have been enough for Mangini. He wanted to take the Pats off their pedestal. So he used the information that he had and set up a sting to take the Patriots down.

But how did Mangini know this was going on?

The answer is simple and distinct. The Patriots MUST have practiced this technique while he was defensive coordinator. Whether or not you believe that the Patriots cheated during the Super Bowls just like every other team is up to you. But for Mangini to have known what was going on he must have either continued the practice of taping the offensive signals of opposing teams or instituted it himself when he became defensive coordinator the season after the Patriots lost their third Super Bowl.

And if you insist that Mangini is innocent, that they simply caught the Patriots in the act of something that no one else had the balls to do, then their image, success, and legacy is even further cleared. But, with overwhelming evidence to the contrary, if you believe that Mangini didn't know exactly what was going on exactly when it happened, you are a fool.

I do not want to make excuses for the Patriots. They cheated. They cheated and they got caught cheating. They deserve their punishment. But three facts remain.

First, when those tapes were removed in the first quarter of the game last weekend, the Patriots proceeded to crush the Jets anyway.

Second, the desire of players like Ty Law and Drew Bledsoe to stick one to their old team and win their own Super Bowl ring wouldn't interfere with telling their coaches about the defensive cheating of the Patriots unless the other team, too was cheating.

And finally, with the evidence very distinctly pointed in a certain direction, the Patriots were just as innocent (or just as guilty) of cheating as every other team in the league during their fantastic Super Bowl run.

Well put. I hadn't thought of the Ty Law angle.

The reason you hadn't thought of that is because Ty Law played on the Patriots defense, which would not benefit from the Patriots taping the other team's DEFENSIVE signals. There would, in fact, be no reason whatsoever for Ty Law to see that film. The only person who would need to see that film would be the offensive coordinator, so he can recognize the other team's defense and call the correct play to benefit from that knowledge. Ty Law is irrelevant.

I knew this was coming but I'm still kind of surprised. Nowhere in the article did I excuse what the Patriots did as okay or say that the situation wasn't handled as well as it could be by Goodell (though the whole conditional picks based on playoffs thing does rub me the wrong way). The Patriots have embarrassed me as a fan of their team and the entire region of New England. I'm just saying that this recent development of cheating should not have any effect on the Patriots legacy up through their Super Bowl championships, for the clearly explained reasons above. If you think I'm trying to rationalize what happened, I would recommend rereading the article.

I read the article. Every word. The more you make this sound like Watergate ("What did the president know and when did he know it?"), the sillier it all becomes. The Patriots have been a great team, but, you can protest all you want, but this does taint their legacy. We can't know how long they've been doing this and whehter they have figured out a way to create an unfair advantage. Just because nobody's talking doesn't mean they don't know anything.

Woodsmeister, you could argue the same point about other NFL coaches. Just because they are all denying that they did it now doesn't mean that they couldn't have been doing the same thing at the same time.

There's no way of knowing anything other than at some point Belichick began taping other game tapes. Under my scrutiny, the idea that he was doing so during the Super Bowl era doesn't hold up.

And Tyrone Briggs, I did laugh out loud at that one.

I suppose you could argue that point about other NFL coaches, Drpatriot, but the fact remains that no other team has been caught. Until that happens, the Pats alone will feel the heat.

And I don't understand why you're burned about the conditional draft pick. That is in place to protect New England. If they were to miss the playoffs, they would keep the high pick and forfeit later, less valuable picks instead. If they do make the playoffs and earn a later first round pick, that is deemed a sufficient loss in the eyes of the NFL. You should be thanking the NFL for that decision, not criticizing them for it.

Touché. I suppose this brings the second two Super Bowls back into scrutiny, but the 2001 game still seems to hold up. I also think the point about Mangini's actions is still legitimate.

A. If you are taking the test, would you rather have the answers or not?

B. How is the Mangini point solid? It's pure speculation and hypothesis.

C. Borrowed (stolen) from JuT:

Dear Pats fans,

Get over yourselves.

Sincerely,

The rest of the NFL

I think it is very fair to call into question the success the Pats have had in recent years. But even if you could prove that this wasn't going on then, the Pats are still tarnished. They have been exposed as a organization that has repeatedly been willing to use deception and outright break the rules in order to get ahead. That's pure sorriness, and in my mind is a clear tarnishing of an otherwise successful run.

So the Patriots out of the blue decided to use a camera in order to steal signals? Against the JETS!!?? Tom Brady went from carrying Brian Griese's Gatorade cup at Michigan to a three time Super Bowl winner? Now I know why.

This will be my last comment on this matter. If you are one of those people who have said, "But everyone does it", that's total bull. You don't know anymore than the next AGM user so stop acting like you do. Just like when I said that you can't take away from the preparation that Randy Moss and Tom Brady put into a game, don't take away from caches like Tony Dungy, Andy Reid, and Marvin Lewis. All you're doing is pulling the guilty by association cardand it's not fair.

Let's just put it this way. There's no excuse to a team cheating. That's what almost everyone is saying, except for the people who say, "but everyone does it". Would you take steroids, since EVERYONE is doing it? No, it's unethical and unhealthy right? What do you think cheating is? It most definitely is NOT ethical. It's absolutely ridiculous.

The thing that I hate most about this is the fact that everyone is still going to talk about this. It is never going to end. It's like Barry Bonds and his situations. It can be kept on the down low for a day or two, but as soon as he hits a home run, everyone will start talking about him again.

Just you watch. As soon as the Pats win against a good team by a landslide, people who hate and criticize the Patriots will just bring the subject up for no reason.

It seems funny that all of these players in the NFL are upset about not getting enough money, but the players that go to the Patriots are not complaining about the pay they receive. Seems to me that the Pats have some kind of unfair advantage maybe we just found out what it is.

Some of the league members aren't happy with the punishment handed out and some think it was maybe too much. Either way the whole problem comes to the fact Billy boy didn't think he did anything wrong. He got caught doing it last year and they told him to stop and then he goes ahead and does it again. Maybe if the commissioner made him sit out 2 or 3 games plus the other fines something would come of this punishment. The advantage they got from his cheaping is far a away over the punishment. If he has been doing this longer, which we already know he has, then he has illegal pictures(Video) of all the teams and that means an unfair advantage. I am not a real big fan of professional football anymore but this whole things stinks to high heaven. There are some fans who hate anything the Pats do and others love it but this is something far greater than fan loyality or support. It looks like he stepped over the line and that reflexs on the game and it integrity. He is a competitive individual but you do not go over the line to complete your goals to win. In peoples' minds this whole idea of cheaping now later or earlier is something that is going to be talked about for a lot of years. The league is trying to sweep it under the table but the sportsfans, sportscasters and sportswriters aren't going to let it be done. How much cheaping helped him win the 3 superbowls we may never know but the question now is did this type of play give him an unfair advantage to allow him to win those games. The NFL has become so competitive that that is what is happening to the game and the league. Win Win Win at any cost because in this case and in all the cases professional sports comes down to the bottomline of MONEY plain and simple. There is no player in todays game that plays for the fun of it without thinking of the finanical gain....I would hope that Billy Boy would love to have last weeks game back without the video incident and lets start over but that isn't going to happen now or later.
