The Patriot Dynasty is Starting to Crumble

14

by user Squib

You can feel it in the air, can't you? The coming of a new period in the NFL, where everything is up for grabs. The New England Patriots aren't the best team in the NFL. They aren't even the second best. They are what they are, no matter what they did in the past, and that is a top ten team, but no one any more scary than the Denver Broncos, or the Washington Redskins. As long as they have Tom Brady, Adam Vinatieri and Bill Belichick they'll be fine, we were always told.

Well guess what? They don't have Vinatieri any more. See the Washington Post.

Yes, you say, but as long as they keep the hardworking underrated players like Willie McGinest around they'll be fine. Guess what? just got cut.

So I ask you: Why should we fear the Patriots any more? Why should they be considered a team to look out for?

In fact, I'll even answer: they shouldn't. The Steelers are now the kings of the NFL. Close behind them are the Carolina Panthers, the Seattle Seahawks, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Denver Broncos, and the Indianapolis Colts. A step back are the Redskins, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Chicago Bears, and the Patriots.

The Pats have always been the most overrated team around. In fact, they are easily the worst team ever to win mutliple super bowls and perhaps the worst team ever to win a super bowl along with the Baltimore Ravens. They are a product of a good coaching scheme in a league where talented teams have been diluted by the salary cap. In an era where teams can't put a good product on the field, the best coached mediocre team will often win. And that is what the Pats are, an exceptionally well coached mediocre team.

Squib, what about Ty Law and Lawyer Malloy? Didn't the dynasty start to crumble when they left? Losing a PK is no big deal, even if it is Vinny. Losing McGinest is a bigger deal, admittedly, but not the end of the universe. The Pats will go into the next year as favorites in the East.

Dominant? In what way? The way they "beat" the Raiders? Go back to a time when football teams were allowed to be good. This patriots team is no better than the team was in 1985 and that resulted in a 45-3 loss. To call these group of players a dynasty is an insult to the Steelers, Cowboys, and 49ers. Even if they were "dominant" that goes to my very point. A well coached team of mediocre players will beat a not as well coached team of mediocre players far more often than not. Does anyone honestly believe that this patriot teams could beat any of the super bowl champions from before the salary cap era?

DNL: that's a good point. I don't know that Lawyer Malloy hurt them too badly, but Ty Law really hurt them.

I don't care what you say, Randal Gay does not equal Ty Law in cover skills.

Another point is that the Patriots started to show signs of not making the good decisions they were known for. Logan Mankins? Not so good.

Corey Dillon was good his first year, but he really sucked last year.

there are tons of other examples

Randall Gay does not equal Ty Law? Wow, thats a revelation. Too bad he only started 2 games last year and only played in 5. The Pats secondary was decimated by injuries last year so it wasn't a good judge to see if the loss of Law hurt them. As for McGinest, he was going to count 7 million against the cap this year, of course they cut him, most teams cut player who cost around 3 million against the cap. They will re-sign him for less money and everyone will be happy. As for Vinatieri, 3 mil for a icker is a lot. I am sure he will re-sign with Pats. Where else is he gonna go, Indy? come on, he is a living legend in New Englad and gets so many opportunities to do sponsorships (Papa Ginos, Dunkin Donuts, Ford, Bernie and Phyls) that he wouldn't get anywhere else. This the most biased thing I have read on here since the article predicting the Cubs to win the World Series.

as much as i do think the patriots deserve a tremendous amount of respect for winning superbowls, i dont think you can compare any team of this era with teams of another era like the steelers. its a whole different ballgame today, now the most important position on a team is the team's salary cap guru, who somehow manages to fit all the players under the cap. that being said, i think its crazy to say the patriots cant be considered a dynasty. year after year they find a way to win, and thats what it is all about. Based on their coaching staff, they have to be considered a contender every year, look at the teams that have lost in the playoffs the past few years, put belichick and his staff on those teams and i guarentee you that the colts have a title by now.

i forgot to mention i think its crazy to say Hasselbeck could have done the same as brady has. the only reason Hasselbeck got the superbowl this year was bc they had homefield advantage in a very weak conference. if they play one road game in the playoffs they would have been knocked out.

"The Pats secondary was decimated by injuries last year so it wasn't a good judge to see if the loss of Law hurt them" Does no one get it? The Patriots are decimated by injuries *EVERY* year. They have a group of players that are constantly getting injured. Name the last year the Patriots didn't have at least three key players hurt. It's not a freaky occurance when it happens every single season

First of all, in 2001-2002 it was only Bledsoe which actually helped and in 2003-2004 they had everyone healthy for the second half. But I never said it was a freaky occurrance. i was only pointing out that you are trying to compare a guy who barely played a quarter of the season.

If the Patriots are a dynasty then it goes like this. The Patriots are to Dynasty's what Mad Dog 20/20 is to Dom Perignon. Sure, both can be considered wine, but they are worlds apart. The Patriots may have won 3 superbowls but not only would they lose to every SB champ prior to the salary cap era, they would likely lose to conference runner-ups. In this world of mediocrity BB can exploit the weaknesses inherent in most teams and that is enough to win. So, call the Patriots a dynasty if you must, just recognize that they are a purely mediocre team. Being king of shit means that you are king, but you are still shit too.

Would you prefer if we pre-appeneded "modern" to dynasty. What the Patriots did was amazing in age of free agency and salary caps. To be able to keep the core of the team intact and win so much is an incredible feat. Besides, what other team has won three superbowls in 4 years? Dallas, thats it. Pitt won 4 in 6 years, so give the Patriots another year to win their 4th. How do you define a dynasty? Who would you then call a dynasty, just the Celtics and UCLA?

Eli never chokes because he is never in a position to choke. You have be playing in meaningful games, or be in the lead late in games, to be considered a choke. He's played in maybe 2 or 3 meaningful games in his whole career, and against the Panthers in the playoffs he choked.

Eli's playoff performance will be damaging, forcing Eli to question his ability to win in a big post-season game. This psychic damage gets magnified by Eli's genetics-- Peyton performs with Scott Norwood like ability in the playoffs.

i'm sure there are many qb's out there who played like crap their first postseason game. If i remember correctly, steve young once came into the game in the NFC championship game against the giants with a lead in the fourth quarter. the niners ended up losing the game by a last second matt bahr fg. i dont think that game destroyed young's confidence. If anything eli will become a better player faster from the experience he takes away in that playoff loss.
