The Officials Are NOT To Blame

New England still undefeated:

Okay, so last night's game between the undefeated Patriots, and the Baltimore Ravens turned out to be an exciting, close game. Which was VERY unexpected. And, as you all may have noticed, the Ravens had ALOT of penalties in their 27-24 loss. The Ravens played nearly mistake-free football up until Kyle Boller threw a costly interception early in the 4th QTR in NE territory. New England got three points off it on a Stephen Gostkowski 38-yard FG. The Ravens got the ball after the FG, and NE stopped them on a 3& out, and Baltimore was forced to punt. Baltimore had another 3 & out their next possession with 3:41 to go, had they picked up just ONE first down that drive, they could have taken another one to two minutes off the clock.

But, instead New England went on a 13-play, 73 yard scoring drive, which took up 2:46 which was capped by a 8-yard TD pass from Brady to Jabar Gaffney. That drive could have been stopped on fourth down TWICE, had Baltimore not made simple mistakes. So, after the two minute warning NE faced a 4th & 1, Brady tried to run up the middle, but was stopped for a loss, BUT Baltimore's assistant coach, Rex Ryan called a timeout. The Ravens were saying that they should not have granted the timeout, because in the rulebook it states only a player, or head coach can call a timeout, well, Ryan should have known that, but, the Ravens still had another chance at stopping them, and they didn't. Although, on the next play facing the 4th & 1 again, they stopped Heath Evans for a loss of 1-yard. BUT, again NE got another chance after the officials blew the play off after NE's right guard Russ Hochstein started to early. So, after the 5 yard penalty due to the false start, NE got a THIRD chance, and on 4th & 6, Tom Brady saw an opening and took it for a 12-yard gain.

After gaining 5 yards on first, second, and third down, New England faced another 4th down, this time they needed 5 yards for the first. Brady threw a pass in the end zone intended for TE Benjamin Watson, but it fell incomplete. Baltimore cheered, because they thought they had won the game, but ANOTHER penalty, this one was a defensive holding called on defensive back Jermaine Winborne which gave the Pats 5 extra yards, and an automatic FD. The next play Brady threw an 8-yard strike to Jabar Gaffney in the left, back corner of the end zone for a TD. The play was reviewed, and the call on the field stood, TD. Between the TD, and the XP, Baltimore's LB, Bart Scott, was penalized for not one, but TWO unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, and he was furious. Ed Reed was offsides on the XP, which was good, and just like that, 35 yards was added onto the kickoff.

Gostkowski kicked off from Bal's 35-yard line, and kicked it right through the uprights for a touchback. Boller went to work with :43 to go, and threw for a 13-yard pass to Musa Smith, and another pass for 12-yards to Derrick Mason. After Baltimore, and NE both called timeouts, and Boller threw an incomplete pass, Boller threw a 52-yard hailmary pass which was caught by Mark Clayton, who came up JUST short of end zone to the 3-yard line of NE as time expired, NE wins 27-24.

The officials are NOT to blame for this heart-breaking Ravens loss. Today, everyone here in MD has been whining about the officials, and I don't like it. Here is why it is NOT their fault:

1. The officials did not force Boller to throw that costly INT to James Sanders, did they???

2. Baltimore had 3 chances to stop NE on 4th down, and they couldn't do the job. Maybe Rex Ryan shouldn't have called that timeout, huh???

3. That defensive holding call on 4th and 5 was, in fact, the right call, so STOP bitching about the call.

4. Baltimore needs to discipline their players a little better, there is NO excuse whatsoever for 35 yards from penalties.

5. 13 PENALTIES, FOR 100 YARDS, 2 TURNOVERS (6 penalties for 50 yards on Pats final scoring drive).

6. Baltimore out gained NE in rushing yards, total yards, and held the ball longer, but had more mistakes (2 turnovers, 13 penalties).

Kyle Boller in 4th QTR: 6 for 9, 86 Passing Yards, 1 TD, 1 INT- Boller really didn't do too bad late in the game, he made just one mistake, and that was the INT, which gave NE the momentum, and NE was able to take the lead later on.

Tom Brady on NE's last Scoring Drive: 3 for 10, 41 Yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 14 Rushing Yards- Brady completed just 30% of his passes on the final scoring drive for 41 yards, but got a few big breaks from Baltimore which helped him lead NE to the GW TD.

Yeah I agree. Baltimore did this to themselves. It's a shame. They played better the entire night. Stupid mistakes and dumb penalties.

A lot of people are saying Gaffney juggled the ball. Paul Zimmerman of Sports Illustrated for one. When the refs are jobbing one team like they obviously did last night, it's then a copout to say that team should be "more disciplined." It would be nice if the refs made it less obvious that they're trying to hand poster-boy Tom Brady the game. I think it's a black eye for the league. The Ravens are not just making up stuff about how the refs personally disrespected them. This is not the first team who got a bad whistle while playing NE. I think it sucks. Make them earn an undefeated season.

The so called "juggling" of that last touchdown was not enough to overturn the call. In Replay situations some calls just aren't going to get overturned regardless of what the call was on the field because the evidence is just not clear. That was too close and would not have been overturned no matter what the call was. The Pats have more close calls go against them than for them. The Indy game, same crew BTW, had the refs actively trying to give the game to the Colts. Unlike Baltimore, New England showed some composure and overcame the bias to win. This Ravens defense is too emotional an undisciplined to be a playoff team. They quit after that timeout incident. Composure under pressure, just like Boller showed all last night, if the D had half the composure he did they would have won.

The cries of unprofessional behavior on the part of the Refs is a valid complaint, but don't cry about being biased if you want the issue dealt with. Also with the character you displayed on the field, acting like children that didn't get the toy they wanted, isn't helping either.

In my football watching life (1984-present) I cannot remember seeing back-to-back personal fouls on the same person. The fact that he didn't get thrown out displays to me that the Ravens cries of personal attacks have some merit, but act like grown men please. If you have an issue speak up! But don't throw the refs flag, don't cry about being called a "boy" because that's what you and your teammates were acting like. Speak up about the way the refs were behaving and give details to the league officials, but don't go running to the press.

Composure, if the Ravens D had some they would be playoff bound.

I agree but it's amazing at how many good breaks the Pats have had this year. They are good and lucky, a hard combo to beat.

I thought Gaffney made the catch.

I thought the Ravens should have put the Patriots away when they had the chance

I thought the refs made 2 particularly poor calls during the Patriots winning drive. they called Rolle for Pass Interference when Moss simply ran him over and I thought the defense holding call that gave the Pats the win was a phantom call. While I can't blame the refs for the result of the game, that last call certainly altered the outcome of the game.

That defensive holding call was a bad call, but I think it was Chris McAlister who held Ben Watson when he was running his route, so they just called it on the wrong guy, but there was still a defensive holding on the play.

There was probably defensive holding on every single passing play of the game. The refs decided that would be a good point in the game to start cracking down I guess.

Didn't catch the end as it was past my bed time *yawn* but if the officials got more strict at the end of the game, the Ravens have a right to gripe. It's like any game I play or attend as a fan. All I ask of the officials is that they call it even and consistently. Or if they're gonna call it unevenly, call it in my favor. ;-)

It was the play of the game and I didn't see the penalty. Football is no different than any other sport. the referee has to call the penalty he sees, not the one he thinks he sees. If it was the same guy who called Samari Rolle "boy" I think it is even more questionable.

Either way, the Ravens had PLENTY of chances to win this game. If Boller hadn't thrown that interception, Baltimore could have scored and possibly won. Who was he throwing to anyway???

Personally I think the Catch was questionable. I think if it had been called incomplete and then challenged the replay would still have been too inconclusive to overturn the call.

fair enough Steel Town. I guess the bottom line was I didn't see anything that showed me he didn't catch the ball. i guess I didn't see anything to suggest he had possession either. Still doesn't bother me as much because it was 1st down. The penalty was a late flag after a 4th down incompletion that ended the game.

MJD, if you watch the replay the flag was thrown at the same time the ball was, and it was holding. They did show that reply 3-4 times.

Tough loss for the Ravens, but it is what it is. Bad calls happen in every game in every sport. I don't think the refs had any agenda to help the Pats win.

one thing people seem to forget. the reviewed call was on a FIRST down. Had the call be overturned, with the penalties, the Patriots would have had 1st and goal on the 3 or 4 yard line. They still would have had 4 more chances to get that TD. maybe it wasn't the correct call, but I think NE would have overcome that, and scored anyway. People also don't seem to recall that poor officiating AGAINST NE when they played the Colts... either that, or people just seem to find every excuse possible that the Patriots can't win on talent, but yet they get lucky, or have everyone with power on their side.

Good call, man. The timeout on 4th down was self imposed, the refs only called it because Rex Ryan was badgering them to make the call. Then, on that 4th down holding play, there was clearly contact outside the five yard zone. The frustrating part about that was there was two other defenders that would have clearly broken up the pass even the guy didn't hold.

The disappointing parts of those plays as a Pats hater was that Baltimore was soooo close, but just couldn't make the game deciding play in the final momnets that would have clinched it. There are least five or six plays where the Ravens just didn't make a play with cool head, and it cost them dearly. Exhibit A was that Ed Reed fumble at the end of the first half. Anyone remember Troy Brown from the playoffs last yaer?

Other head scratching plays: Boller throwing to no one in particular when Baltimore was driving up 24-17. And, of course, the timoeout call by Rex Ryan that cost them twice. First, it denied the defense when it stopped Brady on 4th and 1, then when they tried to make a late comeback, it cost them again when they couldn't call a timeout after that Hail Mary miraculously was caught.

Even though Pittsburgh is better than both the Ravens and Eagles, two teams that gave NE scares, they haven't been a strong team on the road. Already they have lost to Arizona and the Jets, and are just 2-3 away from home this season.

"Who was the only team to beat Dallas this year? Was that luck?" No, it was all the penalties called negating Dallas plays that gave the lead back to the Pats, the team that everybody outside of New England despises. All the pressure is on that old team of cheaters like Belichick, creeps like Brady and thugs like Rodney Harrison to get to the Super Bowl. If not, it's the biggest choke job in the history of sports.

And the Refs didn't make the Ravens complete the Hail Mary short of a TD. Even if that pass was caught, it would have gotten called back. McAlister tackled Sammuel on that play.

Also, the Ravens had been holding the entire game. I've heard half a dozen people that hate the pats say so. I don't get how one could call it a copout to say that a team that has 50 yards of penalties on one drive was undisciplined.

Warden, you are obviously a pats hating prick. Please start actually supporting your claims with facts

Actually Tyrone, I realized the other day what all my teams -- Cowboys, Yankees, 76ers -- have in common: teams from Boston have made my life miserable. Pats handed Dallas only loss of year; Red Sox-Yankees ... need we say more: somebody reversed that damn curse with a vengeance; and now the Celtics are very good again, highlighting how awful Philly basketball has been since that storybook run to the finals waaaaaaaay back in 2001. Where have you gone, Theo Ratliff, a city turns its lonely eyes to you... However, this weekend I will become a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan, for one game. Knowing how much it will hurt Pats fans? Priceless...
