The North American Sports Map

by user Madproof9

I was bored surfing the internet the other day, and I remembered an argument I had heard about how East Coast and Eastern Conference teams have it easier than West Coast and Western Conference teams, because all the teams are located in a much smaller area, therefore they have less time spent, and less stress on themselves while traveling, enabling them to play better. I decided to check it out and see how close all the teams really were. After an hour of no luck searching for a map with all the sports teams in the US and Canada on it, I decided to give up, and make my own.

So, here they are...

First, the American Sports Map, which has all 122 professional sports teams in the four major leagues, the MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL.

There is also a separate map for each sport: MLB Map, NBA Map, NFL Map, NHL Map.

And, I went a little further, and made a separate map for each state (and province) with a professional team. They aren't all to scale, but they are all pretty decent representations on the locations of the teams in a particular state: Alberta, Arizona, British Columbia, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland/Washington, D.C., Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Ontario, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Quebec, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington State, and Wisconsin.

I never knew until doing this that the Washington Redskins play in Maryland... Maybe you'll learn something too.

I never realised that St. Louis Rams played in Missouri, not St. Louis. Also, it shows how the line between East and West is not in the middle, e.g. Detroit Red Wings are in the Western Conference. That is caused because there are more teams in the East, because more people live in the East, hence there are more cities. The East tends to be spread out more, whereas the West coast seems to rely on LA, SF and Seattle.

St. Louis is a city in Missouri, so the Rams are still in St. Louis. It's kind of weird how the Red WIngs are in the West and the Pistons are in the East. It's strange to see Denver as the only real sports hub in the whole Rocky Mountain region, now I understand why there are so many Broncos fans in Wyoming and Utah and Montana.

Wow, Denver must have a draw from a huge geographic radius. Their teams are the only game in town -- for a lot of towns!

Excellent work. My only note would be to move the Patriots a little further west, to make it clear that they're not actually in the City of Boston. The interesting thing to me about this map is the cities/areas that have just one team in one league, even though that team is very successful. For example, Carolina has the Panthers and nobody else, San Antonio has the Spurs and noone else, How long until the other pro leagues expand into these areas? Interesting question, to be sure.

On that token, the NBA teams do seem to be in random cities. San Antonio, Portland, Sacremento, Utah, and a few other places that I don't know the name of all have NBA franchises. (Excluding Canadian NHL Teams)

A bunch of those probably aren't big enough on their own to support other pro teams - like Portland and Utah. Sacramento is close enough to other markets in the other leagues that them not having any other teams isn't really an issue. But certainly San Antonio could support an MLB and/or an NFL team.

Perhaps San Antonio can share home games for the Texas Rangers. After all, it's a state team, so they ought to be able to play games wherever they like in that state.

Check that. The Carolina region does have other teams further south.

Very nice idea, but not very fiscally feasable, Alex. Having two major-league quality stadiums that are only used for fourty games a year doesn't make a huge amount of fiscal sense. But, certainly the Rangers could do a few games a year there, if there's a suitable facility. Anyone know if there is one in San Antonio?

Would an AAA team have requisit facilities for the minimal requirements? Does San Antonio have one of these teams?

Maybe for one or two games a year, but not half the season. Though certainly AAA stadiums have been renovated into MLB stadiums before. Problem is, the AAA stadium would have to belong to the Rangers organization - no MLB team would let another MLB team play games regulalrly in their affiliate's stadium.

Wow, I didn't realize that there really are no sports teams in the heartland of the US.

What's your "heartland", pray tell? Missouri is pretty well covered. Are you counting North and South Dakota as the heartland? :)
