The Next Dan Patrick

by Stumptown

So now that Dan Patrick is leaving ESPN, it begs the question: who is going to replace the most overrated personality in sports journalism/entertainment. I don't hate Patrick, but never has a straight man done more with a solo career. I mean, he was a great foil for Olberman back on the original "Big Show" because Keith was cranky and sometimes obscure and often oddly bombastic in a Ivy-league dork kind of way. Meanwhile, Patrick was more the everyman alternating between calming Keith down and revving him up. When he went solo, he was never the same. He is good with someone who is half crazy like Dibble or Sir Charles, but by himself he is boring and slightly annoying.

Anyway, who takes over that prime afternoons spot? Just for fun, here are my top choices in no particular order. Your thoughts?

Kenny Mayne

Kornheiser with Wilbon

Bob Valvano

Doug Gotlieb

Reese Davis with Charles Barkley

Good grief, he can barely talk when he has a script! Imagine what he would be like on the radio, lots of dead air and awkwardness. Anyway, I love Rece Davis, nicest guy in the world, but Wilbon and Kornheiser would be great on the radio.

Yikes. Have to agree with Meg on this one. Not a big Hickman fan.

Sad but true. He's like Vitale now. They have both look like they are doing bad, over the top, impressions of themselves.

Nice. Not sure why. He knows his stuff and is actually trying to provide insight rather than just trying to be funny. Still, that comment made me laugh.

Mayne has already established himself as Mayne. Reese Davis has a solid shot at being the next Patrick. He's a valued member of the ESPN crew, but still has plenty of room to grow. Doug Gottlieb angers me beyond reason. As those of you outside of Syracuse may not know, he is public enemy number 1.

Wow. No idea that Golieb was so hated by some. that's probably a good reason to make him the guy. I mean, if your job is having opinions and you don't make at least some people angry, you're probably not doing a very good job.
