The NFL Top 10

Peter King thinks the Chargers are 10th in the league in his rankings after week 4. A 1-3 team is ranked ahead of the 2-2 Oakland Raiders. Too much coffee maybe? Here are my power rankings heading into week 5.

1. New England Patriots. Brady to Moss has got to turn you on right? Bengals, Chargers, Jets, Bills, they've all been walloped, and the Pats are well on their way to the playoffs.

2. Indianapolis Colts. Sure they've struggled a bit this year, but they always do that. Also, I consider them better than the Cowboys because of the quality opponents they have beaten.

3. Dallas Cowboys. If Tony Romo can make a play in which he was 30 yards away from the 1st down marker, evade the Rams defense, get the 1st down, then get a touchdown, you know your team is good. Even so, their key matchup will be against the Colts 2 weeks from now.

4. Pittsburgh Steelers. Yes, they may have lost last week, but without Hines Ward, the offense is really out of sync. They had a bad day, and should kick the crap out of Seattle this weekend.

5. Seattle Seahawks. They destroyed San Francisco, Tampa Bay (3-1), and Cincy, who at this point, only have a wicked offense to brag about. Much better than the crap teams they lost too last year.

6. Tennessee Titans. Vince Young is underrated in my opinion, he doesn't get the credit he deserves. He turned an awful team, to a team that has had a winning record with him under the helm.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. SOMEONE has to do well in the NFC South. Too bad their Cadillac shredded a tire or two.

8. Detroit Lions. I just threw up a little.

9. Green Bay Packers. Brett Favre is Brett Favre who is better than any Brett Favre in Brett Favre's mind. Now beat a competent opponent.

10. Jacksonville Jaguars. They got walloped in the running game against Tennessee, they have sure stiffened up, and seem to have no trouble losing Leftwich.

I wouldn't use that style, because some people just do it to beef up their point total.

Yeah, but how can we tell? For the most part they're pretty good. There are no awful teams high up, no obvious homerism...

You make no sense. You consider the Colts better than the Cowboys because of the quality of the opponents they have beaten. If that is the standard you use, wouldn't the Pats be much further down? The 4 teams they have beaten have 4 combined wins after 4 weeks.

To the miserable Jets fan, Uhh....no? The Pats are a well oiled machine, they didn't have the offensive power like last year.

The Pats looked great, but if you give the Colts the nod over the Cowboys based on the quality of opponents, wouldn't youhave to consider the quality of opponents of the Patriots? I mean they beat the Jets and the Chargers, two teams that lost to Buffalo and the Chiefs respectively. They are not good teams.

I have no problem with you ranking the Patriots first overall. I think most people would. I have a problem with you assigning a methodology that you do not use consistently. As I said, it makes no sense.

Now, I don't expect you to make any reasoned argument as I have never seen that from you. Instead, I got just what I expected, an ad hominim attack.

Can't move them down too far--Cowboys opponents have three combined wins.

Look, what seems wackier to you, my ranking system, or the fact that the Chargers are apparently the 10th best in the league according to King?

I think the Chargers probably are the 10th best team in the league. The problem is they have the worst coach in the league. Why oh Why would anyone think that Norv Turner can win in the NFL?

I understand your consistency point, but when you look at how dominant they are, they are miles ahead of Indy and crew.

The 10th best team lost to the Chiefs. As for Turner, I agree, that is incompetence at its finest.

The "strength of opponents" metric only comes into play in tiebreaker-type situations apparently. The Pats are the clear-cut number one. For a hard decision between Indy and Dallas, he went to a secondary metric.

No, I don't even have a problem with the actual rankings. The problem I have is with consistency. I think what Tylersalt says makes some sense about tiebreaker-type situations, but I would still like to see the Pats beat a team with a winning record.

I will say that since we can't reset them every week, there's a good deal of inertia involved in the AGM power rankings.

By the way, I never said I agreed. It's just kind of interesting.

Football Outsiders DVOA has it as follows:

NE

DAL

IND

TB

PIT

SEA

ARI

GB

BAL

TEN

Yes, that Arizona.

Some odd teams are playing really well right now and both of these rankings will adjust as we get further into the season and the strength of schedule factors sort themselves out.
