The NEW Worst Sports Stadium Name

by user Madproof9

A few weeks ago, the Arizona Cardinals revealed that they would sell the naming rights of their new stadium to the University of Phoenix, creating the "University of Phoenix Stadium."

Most people scoffed at the name, most people hate the name, but most people also figured "Hey, at least we have seen the worst sports stadium name, it can't get any worse than this."

Not to be outdone by the lowly Cardinals, the lowly Coyotes decided that they would take over the crown of "Worst Stadium Name In Sports."

Welcome to the Jobing.com Arena, home of the Phoenix Coyotes.

This is absolutely ridiculous, and plain and simple, it's pathetic. The two worst stadium names in sports are now only 100 yards apart. Come out to Glendale and enjoy.

Fantastic. The upcoming Lucas Oil Stadium is almost as bad.

I overheard some ladies that worked there talking about it last Thursday at the Suns game! Wrote about it on my non-armchair blog. Jobing.com is a stupid name but the site really "works". (and I know several people in the "employer's videos"!) Most of the people in Arizona came from somewhere else and more people move here EVERY DAY! I guess it makes sense for Jobing.com (it almost sounds as dirty as Pink Taco Stadium)

At least "Pink Taco Stadium" would be funny. Jobing.com is just stupid. There are some corporate names that flow... Wrigley Field, Coors Field, Arrowhead Pond (before it was the Honda Center)... and then there are names that just make me want to boycott the company that thinks they are cool by buying the rights. Jobing.com is one of those.

I seem to remember most people thinking that the University of Pheonix thing wasn't that bad, but whatever makes your article more dramatic I guess...

I disagree about the "University of Phoenix". Twenty years ago I might have thought it was lame, but not anymore. Sadly, it's now above average. These are the days of arenas named after corporate criminals (Adelphia Coliseum, Enron Field) companies that declared bankruptcy (Air Canada Centre, Canadian Airlines Saddledome, PSINet Stadium) and just God-awful names. (National Car Rental Center, Gaylord Entertainment Center, TD BankNorth Garden, The Cellular One Ice Den and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Centre) The list gets longer and stupider every year. Most of them sound like office buildings, not stadiums. When I hear their names, I usually have no idea what city they are in or even what sport is played there. I often don't even know what the company sells.

Actually, even the least offensive ones are still offensive, particularly if taxpayers paid to build the joint. Governments spend hundreds of millions -because they got nothing better to do with the money- on sports facilities so that sports teams owned by billionaires can make more even money. Then they name the building -not after somebody worth honouring or something that invokes a sense of civic pride- but after any corporation from anywhere whose CEO is stupid enough to think having a building named after them will increase their sales. How stupid do they think we are? I wouldn't expect anybody get a mortgage from a bank because they paid me $10,000 to rename my garage after them.

So, what's next? Clearly it's only getting worse. It sounds stupid today, but 5 years from now you could see Always Red Flag Field, People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals Coliseum of Cuddles, or the Valtrex STDome?

This is why I can barely watch any sports anymore. I feel like I'm getting gang-raped by billionaires and paying them for the privilege via increased taxes and increased product prices.
