The NBA Has Gotten Older, Has It Gotten Better?

Lately it seems like I have been going to my assortment of AARP, Denny's Senior Discount, Depends Adult Diaper, and prune juice jokes way too often. Who is to blame for this? The culprit is the National Basketball Association.

Pro sports have traditionally been a young man's game, and the more athleticism the sport requires, the younger the athletes tend to be. Basketball is perhaps the sport that requires the most athleticism at its top level; however, there seem to be more players in their late 30's and early 40's than women of the same ages in the Cougars group on NBC's cheezy reality show the Age of Love. The phrase "over the hill" seems to have been replaced by "even older than Grant Hill."

First it was 36 year old Penny Hardaway coming out of retirement to join the Miami Heat. Then it was 42 year old Reggie Miller expressing interest in returning, followed by 36 year old Allan Houston announcing his desire to comeback, followed by 43 year old Charles Oakley's intentions to return being leaked. And it's not as if they are the only ones, 41 year old Dikembe Mutombo, 40 year old Cliff Robinson, and 44 year old Kevin Willis are among those still playing well passed their prime.

Charles Oakley once said 60 percent of the NBA smokes pot, now it appears he was being conservative.

Despite scientific proof that players over the age of 35 are not able to perform to their maximum capacity, these players stubbornly defy logic in a pursuit of what exactly? Is it for the money? Is it a refusal to accept reality? Is it just plain stupidity?

And why are teams giving in?

American culture stresses individual pursuits over public benefit, and this epidemic indicates this. Whatever happened to gracefully passing the torch to the next generation?

The public has a right to receive maximum performance from the basketball player's whose salaries they pay. Airline pilots are required to retire at an age when they are no longer able to perform at their peak, why should basketball players be any different?

Perhaps it shows the sad state of affairs in NBA basketball if someone can make a living shooting the occasional jump shot.

Just goes to show how far the decline of the NBA has reached. And to think, this isn't rock bottom yet....

The NBA is really in a bad place right now. While the Eastern Conference may be more competitive this season, the referee scandal and these pathetic, ill-conceived comebacks are not doing thing to help the league. We can't be far from some kind of a defining, "bottoming out".

You claim that "American culture stresses individual pursuits over public benefit, and this epidemic indicates this." While most NBA players that only care about themselves and their own bank account, (Shaq, LeBron, Iverson, etc.... ) I believe these older players want to stay around for a different reason. Love of the game. 20 years ago, as the NBA was reaching its peak, players like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson didn't play for money. Yes, they got pay a TON of money, but the reason they were still playing into their mid 30's wasn't for money, it was the love of competition, love of rivaly, love of the game. People today talk about rivalries like Lebron vs. Wade. Those are nothing like the competition of old, and I believe these older players are just what the NBA needs to turn back into the magic days of old, where the bank account didn't reign supreme.

In my opinion (since I really didn't say it) I HOPE Reggie Miller comes back, even more than the other players. He's one of my favorite of all time. 3-pointer FOR THE WIN! (I still dream of the knicks playoff 10 second comeback)

I rather see washed up veterans who once were great than teenagers with "potential" most of whom end up as busts.

It's the salary cap, it's screwing everything up. Remove it!

The cap doesn't prevent teams from spending as long as they have the money to afford it (cough, cough Robert Sarver)- the luxury tax scares them out of it...

The reason this sudden burst of old talent is coming back is strictly due to the lack of basketball knowledge the young guys have. Older players with a high basketball IQ can hang with top athletes who rely solely on their athleticism. This is the state of the current NBA. Tis a shame.

I totally agree! The players from the 80s and 90s played with so much more savvy and understanding of the game than many of the new wave of young stars.

What a buncha BS. The league is younger than it probably has ever been. The league was pathetic in the 90's, though the patheticism (a nice contrary to athleticism) was masked by athlete supreme, MJ.

So some old guys want to play and teams want their services. All that shows is that the rigidity of the salary cap makes it impossible for younger, more talented players to maneuver themselves to where their skills are most needed.

It's crap like this that makes us all dumber as basketball fans. for shame.

Because these dudes know how to play the team game of basketaball. You don't need to out-athletecize people to outplay them in basketball. It's footwork and hands and positioning. AND they know how to defend. The young kids today all want to be one on one stars a la And 1... And as long as someone wants them to be on their roster, let 'em hang on as long as they can, I say...
