The Mile High Whiners

Get those Denver Broncos some cheese…you know, for their whine. While I’ve always been vehemently opposed to showing too much in the preseason as far as trick plays, blitzes, and the like…I’m all for preparing for the regular season. Wade Phillips has come under fire for scheming and blitzing the Broncos to death in the Saturday night preseason game. Trying to win is apparently no longer appropriate in the realms of NFL preseason football. And the Broncos are going to let you know about it.
Get real.
When you play a 3-4 defense, don’t you have to blitz every play? Or was “Baby” Jay Cutler’s pre-snap reads thrown off by that fact? Maybe he thought only three guys would rush on every play, and he’d have all day to throw. Which, you know, would be nice and all, but this is the NFL. Not sure what Denver expected, after practicing against the Cowboys all week, they must have seen SOMETHING that would hint at a lot of different looks at a lot of different blitzes. Guess not. Don’t the Broncos have access to film? Had they never heard of what Wade Phillips likes to do on defense? Didn’t they play against him twice last year in San Diego? No? Really?
Poor John Lynch. His feelings are hurt too! I guess the fact that the ‘Boys blitzed on every down affected their rushing defense too. Yeah, that must be it…those three first half rushing touchdowns ran directly straight ahead were too tricky! Their heads were still spinning from those blitzes they had never seen before.
I suppose that also explains Travis Henry dropping the ball on a handoff inside their own 10. Must’ve been scared of the pass rush. It’s all coming together now. It’s one thing to piss and moan if the Dallas Cowboys had kept their starters in the second half of the game and run up the score, but they didn’t. They played the first half and kicked the crap out of an apparently ill-prepared Broncos team.
So here’s to the John Lynch’s of the world. Where all’s fair on the gridiron so long as he’s on the winning side.
