The Media is Too Quick To Jump.... Again

After the ramifications of the Duke Lacrosse scandal you would think that the media would be more skeptical about attacking athletes and burying them when linked to allegations. That left a black eye for many in the media, and the vowed to change their ways and not cast stones till all the facts have come in. Well that lasted all of a month.

A few weeks back Terry “Tank” Johnson of the Chicago Bears was pulled over for speeding, and then arrested for a DUI. While no charges had been pressed at the time and they awaited test results, the Chicago Bears cut Johnson, stating that he was an embarrassment to the team. The media went on to bury Tank as an idiot, who could not learn from the error of his ways.

Well here we sit a few weeks later, and guess what…. Tank had a blood alcohol level of .072 that is bellow the legal limit of .08. Okay yeah so he had a few drinks but he was not under the influence. Yeah he was speeding but who doesn’t have a speeding ticket? So I’ll be man enough to step up and say, yup… Tank was right and he was wrongly cut by the Bears.

Now who will give him another chance?

Remember, he's already on probation and out for the first half of the year. Unlike the Bengals management, it seems the Bears don't want to deal with repeat offenders, even if it's only a traffic ticket. A .072 is not exactly sober, nor is it smart behavior from someone on Probation. Media or not, the Bears were right.

Actually, I believe that Tank Johnson has served his sentence and owes no further legal debt to society.

Exactly, he's .008 points from being convicted with a DUI. He should have more sense if he's in hot water not only with the league, but also with the law.

I can't find it, and I'll give you that. That said, I can't find anything that discusses his current probation status. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that if you violate your probation and they put you in jail for it, you wind up on probation again when you come out.

I'm not looking to argue with you Josh, it is just that I was pretty sure that I read somewhere that Tank Johnson is not on probation and has served his sentence in full after being released from jail. If I find that link I read earlier, I will post here.

I know. It would be interesting to find out. I couldn't find anything that said either way. I just assumed he would be back on probation. If he's not, that would be really stupid.

I'm not bitter toward the system. Listen no one understands the reason why we have it better than me. My father was killed by a drunk driver. I've actually participated in alchol studies while in college, and have willing subbmitted myself to breathalizer testing to better understand them. I minued you once up above then gave it up cause frankly I dont really care.

And I minused you when you were just flat-out wrong. But that's not the issue either. The issue is that getting that close to the legal limit, which requires more than 2 drinks over time, isa exceptionally irresponsible, and downright stupid in context of his past legal trouble.

The issue is, that we are so quick to burry a guy even if he is an idiot without even having the facts on hand. Sure he made a dumb choice, but his .072 may not be the same as your .072. Broad sweeping laws and regulations while important for a society hold the possibility of being extremly dangerous to the individual

As he's bigger than me, odds are that his .072 is more drinks than me. As I said, it's not this alone, but in combination with other elements that makes it punishable.

What's being left out in this discussion is that Tank agreed to a zero tolerance policy in order to remain with the Bears. 1 run-in with law, being higher than zero, violated a policy he agreed to, and left the Bears no choice but to cut him. That being said, I hope the Cowboys do pick him up. Greg Ellis is talking holdout and we need the D-linemen.

Listen was it smart for him to do what he did probably not, was it some mortal sin that we are making it out to be no. A .072 alchol leval is nothing. The only law he broke was a speeding ticket, there is no reason for him to be buried and left for dead.

Let me get you to .072 and see how you feel. No one said it was a mortal sin, but in context of the rest of his behavior, the Bears are justified. If it was the ONLY thing he had done, I'd agree with you. But it isn't.

Well I don't think he'll exactly be left for dead. There's a lot of teams out there that need a DT, and Tank Johnson is one of the better ones. I know that teams like the Cowboys, Bills, and Saints have shown interest. And that's WITH an 8 game suspension. His demand will only grow once his suspension is up.

Actually you are way off, according to this:

http://www.ou.edu/oupd/bac.htm

At the highest level of weight it allows (240) if you have 8 beers in 5 hours, you are at .06. Remember this is a 300 pound dude that would need to drink a lot to get there. JuT, knowing you are a 160lb weakling :), to get to .070 in 3 hours of drinking, you'd have to drink 6 beers.

No way 1-2 does it. Sorry guys.

You can disagree with the biology of it all, but you it's a simple formula related to body size and the type of drink you have. Have you ever had a breathalyzer? If not, you have no idea what .072 feels like, because you don't know when you are there.

The chart is made of averages. It doesn't take into account high metabolisms or tolerance to alcohol, but as a 260lb man myself, it takes more than 4 beers in an hour to be + .08. Just recognize that MOST people with some experience with alcohol won't feel a "buzz" until .10 or higher.

Everybody is different. I'm sure there are people out there that could pass a road driving course at .15 or higher, doesn't make it un-illegal.

Tank didn't get cut because of this - this was the gnat on the straw that broke the dromedary's back... Paying your debt to society doesn't change the facts.

I once took a breathalyzer less than 5-8 minutes after slamming a 40oz.

Back in the days of underage drinking, me and 3 friends got a 40 each and went to a party. Me and my one buddy slammed a bottle, chucked it in a trash barrel, walked into a party and the cops got there right after us. I came up .000, with malt liquor still in my esophagus! Our other two buddies also came up .000, but still had their bottles in possession because they hadn't finished theirs yet - and got busted.

I had one other breathalyzer test when I got pulled over for swerving (missing those famous PA potholes) when I was completely sober. I'm .000 for Two!!!

It's not how much you drink but how much alcohol DOESN'T get broken down by your liver and enzymatic processes and enters your bloodstream.

This was a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation...I don't blame the bears for cutting him...

If you didn't cut him and he was tanked (get it!) while driving, then the bears have to deal with that and possibly get punished as well

If they cut him, they lose a troubled player and get flack from jackass bloggers like myself...

Just speculation: I’m not going out on a limb by saying that Tank PROBABLY figured he WAS over the limit. After all, HE knows how much he had to drink before getting out on the road at 3:30 a.m. and speeding. He PROBABLY let his team know that he MIGHT be facing charges. That’s all the Bears needed in my opinion. Admission of guilt from a guy they’d stood by through a one too many guilty situations. TANK FUCKED UP, HE KNEW IT, OWNED UP, AND THE BEARS SAID GOODBYE. It’s not a matter of morality or legalities - It’s a matter of PRINCIPLE. The Bears wanted Tank to be a player that would live up to their expectations of him. He didn't - continually, and lost his job as a result. Good luck to Tank as he gets his life sorted out and hopefully lands another job in the NFL, and keeps it.
