In 1979, a college senior named Larry Bird lead the relatively unknown Indiana State to the NCAA finals. There, he faced Michigan State and their talented sophomore -- Magic Johnson. This much anticipated matchup of two college superstars and hotly rated NBA prospects drew the attention of a nation of sports fans.
Magic and the Spartans prevailed, 75-64, with Johnson receiving the Most Outstanding Player award. But for the next decade, Magic v. Bird would be the buzz phrase of the NBA.
