The Life and Times and Headaches of a Cleveland Browns Fan

As I get closer and closer to my 25th birthday, I realize more and more that this could turn out to be a pivotal point in my life. I'll be making decisions that will resonate throughout the rest of my existence.

One of these such decisions will happen on or the days after my quarter-century birthday during one of America's most sacred events, the NFL Draft.

I've decided it's time to reevaluate my fanship in the Cleveland Browns.

Some may recall how I off-handedly mentioned that if the Browns draft Brady Quinn, I would forfeit my position as a Browns' fan. I wasn't kidding. However, this deep reflection into my NFL loyalties goes deeper than and overrated quarterback from an overrated school.

My Browns fandom started on a tumultuous note. Growing up as a cardholder of the Fairweather club, I decided to pledge my allegience to the hometown Browns going into the 1995 season. For you quick with pigskin trivia, you know that this was the year that Art Modell (aka Satan) announced that he was moving the team. So my devotion was put on hold for a few years and I decided to go back to my previous team (Dallas) and a brand spankin' new team (Jacksonville) until the Orange and Brown returned to Lake Erie.

Since the Browns return, I (along with many others) have been left unimpressed by a lackluster attempt to build a solid franchise. Several coaches, a dozen QBs and 7,000 underqualified and injury-prone offensive linemen later, the team is still trying to rebuild (you know, since they've been doing since before the NFL existed).

This year, as always, it seemed like things could be different. With the 3rd pick the Browns had a chance to get Adrian Peterson, a young stud would could bring energy and talent to the backfield and challenge seasoned veteran Reuben Droughns  who was the first Browns RB to rush for over 1,000 yards since 1985.

Instead, they signed Jamal Lewis, a (mostly) washed-up ex-con.

"Ok," Browns fans thought. "Now we have two veteran running backs and we can trade down for the best receiver prospect in years." No, no, silly Browns fans. The Browns then traded Droughns for never-really-was receiver Tim Carter.

(As an aside, let me mention that I've bought two Browns jerseys in my life. The first was a Chris Spielman jersey, he retired a few weeks after I bought the jersey and never played a down for Cleveland. The other jersey I bought last week, it was a Droughns jersey. I'd taken off the tags by the time Lewis was signed, it had been washed by the time Droughns was traded. At least it was 80% off.)

So the two outstanding prospects the Browns could have drafted would be stepping into positions that have already been filled by players who shouldn't have been brought in. That means they can draft the position they always need to draft but always ignore (OL) or they'll draft Brady Quinn.

Either way, I'm really fed up with this team. I'm really sick and tired of all the broken promises, bad personnel decisions and all the general heartache. I've put almost half my life into this team (if you count the years I was a stand-by fan following the expansion team plans) and I feel like I've gotten no where.

It's fourth and long. The Browns have one last chance to show me I should stay on their side. Until the draft hits, I'm going to start narrowing down the NFL teams I may have an interest into converting to should the draft be (another) disaster. Feel free to make pitches for your favorite team, I have a short list in mind, but I'm open to every team (except the Lions, Steelers, Ravens and Bungles/Felons).

We'll see what kind of present Phil Savage can muster up for this fan's 25th birthday.

Dear Mr. I am a cpcp,

I and among other Cheeseheads extend a formal invitation for you to join the Green Bay Packers fan base. Here are some reasons that you should.

1. I am sure that you are bitter liking a team and then having them move like the Browns did in 1995. The Packers are never going to move because the city of Green Bay owns the team (http://en.wi...of_Directors).

2. They are a midwest team. You are an Ohio guy so why not cheer for a midwest team that will possibly get T.V. time in Ohio.

3. A.J. Hawk and Brett Favre. Why not support a former Buckeye. You have a Favre fan box.

4. They have tradition. I like myself like College more than the NFL. However, with all the tradition and loyal fans in a small town, the Packers almost seem to be like a college team.

5. You wouldn't be bandwagoning. Hey they were 4-12 and then 8-8. Its not bandwagoning its just coming to your senses.

6. It's a young team. Is there anything better than watching a young team devlop? It'll be a blast to watch all the young Packers become stars.

Hurray up and become a Cheesehead today. If you do decide to become a Packer fan than you can open this link. It may convince you. (http://www.y...=CFVksXMbVHw).

I'm sorry you bought a discounted jersey some sporting goods store was trying to offload. But that's no reason to jump ship as a fan.

Droughns was useless anyway - he played with NO effort after he got his contract extension. That 1000 yard season was the last time he ever fell forward after getting tackled.

Don't be so quick to rule out Adrian Peterson as the Browns draft pick at 3. Look at both teams in the superbowl - Indy and Chicago - and you'll see that both employed 2 running backs that split time. "Thunder & Lightning" or "RB by Committee", or whatever you want to call it. The NFL is a copycat league, and we're probably going to emulate them.

And Jamal Lewis was signed to only a one year deal. And it's not like any of Savage's draft picks start right away. Think Braylon Edwards behind Antonio Bryant. Charlie Frye behind Trend Dilfer. You have a vet cushion their intro to the NFL, rather than "Tim Couch'ing" them and ruining their career.

Don't be a fairweather fan. Stick to the boys in orange and brown.

# Actually I got the jersey at Kohls.
  1. First of all, I said I'd wait through the draft. I know Peterson is still an option, but that doesn't mean the Browns will take him. Bad drafts are Cleveland's style.
  1. I knew someone would be ignorant enough to play the "fairweather" card. (And surpise, an AF!) You can't call me a fairweather fan, I've been a Cleveland sports fan for a very, very long time and continue to be a passionate Indians and Cavs fan even though they've seen some very bad weather through the years. It's not like I'm jumping ship after one bad year. I'm just deciding if I'm wasting my time. The Browns franchise has been bad for so long there's been books written about it. (This one is what got me thinking about leaving the Browns fanship in the first place.)

So apparently you can't space between numbered lists... Or all of my points were just that important.

I posted that as Anonymous because it was my first post, and my first visit to the site. I'll probably create an account, since this site seems pretty cool.

I too about bought a #32 jersey about a week ago at Kohl's. It was a $15 Jim Brown jersey. But, I passed because I'm sick of thinking about the glory days of Cleveland and wondering when they'll ever get a star our generation can cheer for. I will cry tears of joy if a Browns player even ever goes in the first round of our fantasy football draft.

By the way, I also turn 25 right before the draft. I'm hoping my present is Adrian Peterson. And you're right: "fairweather fan" is not a good label for a Browns fan, since we haven't had good times since years before the expansion. I made that comment because of that line about only becoming a dedicated fan in 1995 when the Browns left.

I did read that Terry Pluto book, and yeah the NFL screwed us over in a lot of ways when we entered the league. And, it seems near the middle of every season I hate myself for wasting so much time tying my emotions to this franchise. However, every new season, for some reason, I keep coming back and having hope. Because it will be so sweet the one day we become a dominant team.

I cannot deny that our team right now is an embarassment and a joke. But the day I stop cheering for them is the day I quit following the NFL entirely.
