The Legend of Kirby Puckett

A good Kirby Puckett encyclopedia article will tell you about his life and career. An opinion article from a teenager who has grown up worshiping him will tell you about what he means to the state of Minnesota.

As most people know, Kirby died last March. Kirby was a short and overweight boy who grew up with nothing. He is a great example of a great player that didn't fit the Athletic build. Some great athletes diddn't fit that build. Kirby didn't, Jerome Bettis didn't, even George Mikan diddn't fit the ideal body shape. But Kirby was able to perform beyond anyone's expectations.

Kirby will always be remembered for his performance in the 1991 World Series. He made the game winning walk off home run in game six, and Jack Buck's Famous quote "And we'll see you...TOMORROW NIGHT," and then the next night made a game saving catch in the ninth.

But Kirby Puckett was more than just a great Baseball figure, he was a hero. He was the one that the Twins turned to when they needed a clutch hit. He was the one that made all of those amazing off the wall catches. He was a icon to Minnesota Sports. Everyone knows that he played for the Twins. He was a role model to me, and to everyone growing up during his career.

As soon as it was announced that he was dead, the local sports radio station, KFAN, dedicated almost two straight days for calls about the memories people had about him. There were grown men, who you could tell from the sound of their voice were very big, burly men sobbing over the fact that he died. It was a sad day. But the Twins have a shot at making the playoffs this year, and I hope that they can win the world series in his honor this year. I know that if the Twins win this year's World Series, Kirby's Spirit will look down upon Minnesota, and give that big smile that he was known for.

Rest in Peace Kirby Puckett, the World will never forget you.

I doubt he'll smile on Minnesota. They ran him out of the front office/state on some (supposed) sexual harassment stuff, remember? He was still pretty salty about it in his last days here in Scottsdale, AZ. Great Player. "Played" baseball like we did as kids in the backyard. Sadly, another reason why we should admire the work on the field only and shouldn't be concerned with pro athletes personal biz (good OR bad)

Yeah, it is best to leave his personal life out of the spotlight. If not, one will quickly realize that Kirby was no role model.

Kirby was not found guilty, and was a great person. It's comments like yours that exemplify the bias against the legal system.

woe, woe woe did you see the (supposedly)???

While he wasn't convicted, he admitted to doing things he shouldn't have (he admitted more than just the bathroom event, too). He was no angel, and I didn't expect him to be. And I always say, no matter HOW much good you do, they'll ALWAYS remember the negative (ask Ron Artest, Kermit Washington, Steve Howe, etc ad nauseum)

It's comments like yours that are drowning in delusion. You go ahead and remember things as you want them to be, I'll remember them how they were...

Just for the record, Kirby did not hit a HR (walkoff or otherwise) in Game 7 of the World Series. Gene Larkin drove in Dan Gladden in the 10th inning for the only run of the game. RIP Kirby.

How did I miss that? He did make a home run denying catch, though... One of the BEST games ever played...Jack Morris gets no respect, man...
