The Laziest Baseball Player

by Romiezzo

There has been a lot of talk about how many people don't hustle in baseball. I don't know about you, but I don't think it's lack of hustle, I think it's just lack of remembering what to do on a certain play. I got into this conversation with my mother (Red Sox fan; go figure) about how Manny Ramirez is extremely lazy, but there has been little talk about him now that everyone knows how lazy he really is.

For instance, in the game two days ago against the White Sox, J.D. Drew was up, and Manny Ramirez, as well as everyone else, thought he hit a home run. Manny, in my opinion, should've scored in that situation, but it didn't matter, as the Red Sox won 10-3. The umpires didn't call it, so Manny still had to bust his butt and make it home. He didn't even slide or even attempt to try to not be what was the final out to end the inning.

Now we all know that Manny Ramirez is a pretty lazy guy most of the time. My question to you guys is: Is Manny the laziest ballplayer today? I was thinking Barry Bonds is up there. Even though he can surprisingly steal a base, if he's gonna play ball, he's not just going to play all of the home games. Now I understand that he should play all of the home games now (because he's so close to the record), but come on! Just because he's in a mini-slump, Barry Bonds "must" take some time off because of the old fashioned excuse that has been used for what? 2-3 years?
"Oh, MY LEG HURTS!! I CAN'T PLAY TODAY, OR TOMORROW, OR THE DAY AFTER THAT! WAAA WAAA WAA!! I'm a little girl." That excuse is getting old.

Also, would you consider Roger Clemens lazy, or just selfish? He's getting 25 million dollars THIS YEAR and he is turning 44 in about 2 weeks. It's ridiculous, and he didn't even start playing until June. I feel bad for allĀ of the other players who deserve better, and need a chance to play in the majors rather than having Roger Clemens, a guy who is probably going to play longer than Julio Franco, play for the Yankees. He's not even doing that great. Sure, he's getting it back, with a 2.63 ERA so far this month, but in June, he wasn't helping at all. 5.32 ERA that month, and he hardly made it through the seventh inning. He's doing a lot better for the team, and don't get me wrong, he's not lazy in my opinion, but some people might take that into consideration because he doesn't start like everyone else.

Nice article. I agree all the way with Clemens. Does he want to spend time with his family or play baseball? Does he even really play for the Yankees? I mean, every fifth game he is pretty much hired contract muscle and that's about it. So, really, I guess this isnt so much laziness but brute indecisive nature. Be with your family Roger and retire for the 4th or so time.

How can you blame Clemens for being lazy? It's not like he's on a multi year contract and does that. Everyone bidding for him knows he won't play. They don't have to pay him, yet they chose. That doesn't make Clemens lazy, that makes him smart.

Think Bonds missed those games last week so he would have a better chance of hitting his 756th at home but if he doesn't hit 3 in the next 7 home games he will have to go back on road again.

Part of Bond missing games is legitimate injuries...the guy is old (baseball-wise) and he really can't play everyday...

I mean, IMO, baseball isn't a game that really wears you down, but I've also never played pro baseball for the better part of 4 decades of my life...like a certain bonds...

With that said, I think him playing at home to hit homers has, at least, something to do with it...

Well, I just think if you're getting paid to play, you should, whether you're old or not. That's just my opinion. Bonds is at 753. Have you ever heard of maybe taking him out in the middle of the game? Or does every single player on the giants have to play all 9 innings of baseball?

Ramirez is just going through the motions. If he was a rookie he would be benched for his shenanigans. Clemens has only 2 wins to show for 9 starts. He is set up again today facing the last place Royals of the AL Central.

Who do you guys think the laziest player in baseball is? And when I mean lazy, I don't mean Jose Reyes lazy, like him not going to first. I'm talking about straight up lazy...

I think JD Drew could give Clemens a run for his money. Is being lazy and not caring the same thing? If it is, Drew wins in a landslide.

Coco Crisp is actually Covelli Loyce Crisp. Now that's a name. I'm afraid like Jacoby Ellsbury might just shorten his name to Jacob or Jake, which would be horrifically disappointing.

To Manny Stiles, Manny led in outfield assists, but where did he have to throw from? 200 feet away from home plate? 150? Don't get me wrong, he has a great arm, but that green monster helps him A LOT.

Now, if he wants to be Milton Bradley and have an injury (like he does every single year) that's probably going to be major, then I'll put him in front of Clemens, only because Clemens can actually do something for the team.

If a player hits a ball and thinks it's foul and doesn't run to first, that's not lazy in my opinion. That's just lack of concentration. Running to first, in my opinion is always necessary whenever there is a close call, but I guess you're right, he could be considered lazy in that example. But what about the Carlos Beltran play 2 years ago? Pop up to second base and it ended up being a double play. I think that's just lack of remembering to run to first base on that particular play. Beltran and Reyes weren't thinking "Oh, I have to run to first. No, I think I'm just going to stay here for a couple of seconds."

The problem with labeling Manny as the laziest player in baseball is that the guy works on his swing during downtime more than anyone else in the entire league. He's the first guy to the batting cages before games and the last guy to leave. So really, it's a matter of how you define lazy.

anyone who even implies Clemens is lazy is clearly a hater. There's no logical basis for it. What because he gets paid a lot that makes him lazy? because he starts his season in June? say what you want about that, but the only reason this guy continues to pitch at a high level at the age of 45 is due to the fact he works out religiously. Then when he's on the field he gives 100% every time, made some great plays in the field the other day including beating fast runners to the base. I'd rather have him start in June, then Randy Johnson pitch (or be on the dl) the entire year.

Sometimes 'lazy' gets judged not only through 'lying eyes' but lying words. A local Boston sportscaster/former teammate noted that Jim Rice worked tirelessly to improve his defense and got little credit. Mike Greenwell worked the media constantly, was a great interview and popular player, but played poor defense and didn't work nearly as hard on his game as did Rice and others. Greenwell got a pass. In other words, massage the media and get cut a lot of slack. Manny doesn't talk and will get no slack...for the most part, I think he's played pretty hard this season.

Lazy or not, there was another perfect example of Manny Ramirez not hustling during a play during their game on ESPN tonight against the Indians. He thought he hit a HR and jogged to first, only got a single as the ball hit the well in left center, and the next hitter grounded into a double play. That's just who he is -- love him or hate him, I guess.

Yeah, look at last night's game. If Drew was lazy, he wouldn't have caught some of those fly balls hit to the outfield. He made a pretty good catch near the wall. Manny...pst... if he was doing his job, Crisp would've tied the game and they probably would've kept playing in extras.
