The JTRS, Week of December 3

I use my own formula, sort of like the much maligned BCS system to figure out what teams are the best in college basketball. Here are my current, definitely eye-opening, rankings:

Now, onto the rankings (last week in parentheses) -

  1. Texas (2) - deserves the spot after beating UCLA
  2. UCLA (1) - apparently the top two teams in the nation played last night, and nobody noticed
  3. Memphis (4)
  4. Duke (5)
  5. Marquette (6)
  6. Xavier (9)
  7. Texas A&M (3)
  8. Miami (Fl) (NR) - from unranked to #8, great Kenpom and Computer numbers
  9. Louisville (7) - why did they lose to BYU?
  10. George Mason (10) - the polls don't like them, RPI loves them (that will switch by season's end)
  11. North Carolina (8) - terrible RPI and SOS and they cannot play defense (again)
  12. Butler (16)
  13. Michigan State (14)
  14. Tennessee (17)
  15. Washington State (11)
  16. Villanova (13)
  17. Kansas (21)
  18. Pittsburgh (12)
  19. Vanderbilt (NR)
  20. Oregon (15)
  21. Gonzaga (18)
  22. Virginia (22)
  23. Indiana (20)
  24. St. Mary's (NR) - two WCC teams in the Top 25, a rare sight
  25. Georgetown (24) - please play someone besides Fairfield

Dropped Out: Wisconsin, Syracuse, N.C. State Just missed (also considered): Brigham Young, Arizona, USC, Clemson, Stanford, Southern Illinois, Kansas State, Arkansas

No one really watches college basketball until february, mainly because of the tournament. Which is exactly why ESPN has the ad campaign that talks about the "field of 328" and "the brackets before the brackets". And also why college football should not have a playoff, because no one will watch college football until thanksgiving.  :D

Theres a lot of truth and error in what you just said. You're correct the NC2A tourney does render much of the regular season pointless. However another reason for the lack of interest in bball during the winter months is Football. If a school has a successful football team playing till New Years day its hard to split that attention to a baskeball season that you know has three months left.

I don't think the regular season is pointless in college basketball at all. The wins that teams like Texas are earning right now will help them down the road whether seeding or experience wise in March. If you had a 16 team college football playoff at the end of the season I think you would see that every week of the regular season would still matter, because it would determine who plays in those final 4 weeks.
